Gladys Pauline Townsley
Gladys Pauline Townsley, 89, of Adel, died Jan. 9, 2023, after complications from breaking her hip in a fall on Christmas morning. She was born in Des Moines on Dec. 23, 1933, to Mamie LeMar and Cornelius Wolfe.
Gladys spent most of her life in the restaurant world as a waitress, cook and the occasional bartender. She worked at Bear’s Restaurant & Yankee Clipper in Ankeny as well as running Cisco Tacos behind the bait shop in Polk City for several summers. She also spent some years as an in-home health aide, being not only their caregiver, but cook, housekeeper and friend. She recently battled cervical cancer and won. She had doubts she would be able to do the treatment at first. But she fought every day for eight weeks going to radiation and was proud of her accomplishment.
She is survived by her three girls, Laurie Helen, Betty Gale and Darcy Kay (Kim) Townsley; daughter-in-law Deb Comer (Dick); 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Warnock; and several extended family members. She was preceded in death by her boys, Frank “Frankie,” Johnny and Michael Paul Townsley; daughter-in-law Sheila Seals; parents, Mamie and Charles “Chuck” Clapsaddle; and best friend of 70 years, Kathy Beavers.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
