Bonnie Lou Bowles

Bonnie L. Bowles was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on Jan. 26, 1936. She was raised and educated in Rowan. After high school, Bonnie attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. On Aug. 25, 1957, she married Andy J. Bowles from Adel.
Bonnie worked in several locations as an administrative assistant prior to starting a family, when she became a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Bonnie was a long-time member of the De Soto United Methodist Church in De Soto. Her interests included cooking and baking, gardening, crafts, playing bingo, and spending time with family and friends.
Bonnie died Sept. 27, 2024, at Azria Health in Winterset, where she had been a resident for more than seven years. She is preceeded in death by her parents; brothers, Doede Harms and Bill Lockett; sister, Violet Pohlman; and son-in-law, Michael Wonderlin.
Bonnie is survived by Andy Bowles, her husband of 67 years; sons, Jerry (Sheri) Bowles and Alan (Stacey) Bowles; daughter, Beth Wonderlin; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Oct. 1 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. Interment followed in the Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Thomas ‘Tom’ Walter Harbison

Thomas “Tom” Walter Harbison, 76, died Sept. 26, 2024, at Independence Village in Waukee. He was born in 1947 in Waynesville, Missouri. Tom graduated from El Dorado High School in Arkansas and Oklahoma State University with a degree in agriculture economics. He also served in the Reserves.
In 1969, Tom married Jeanne Mauk. The two shared 55 years, traveled, built a family and shared a lifetime of memories. Tom dedicated much of his career to agriculture banking, working with Wells Fargo and Farmers Hybrid before ending his professional life at the Small Business Administration (SBA). He spent 17 years as a scoutmaster, guiding young boys on countless adventures, including a memorable trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Arizona and the Boundary Waters in Canada. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf, hunting, fishing and embracing the outdoors, especially in the mountains.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jeanne; children, Heather, Jay (Jen), and Ross (Laura); grandchildren, Brock, Hannah, Quinn, Tommy and Leila; sisters, Sue Harbison and Jane (Russ) Jackson; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation was Oct. 3 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at the First Christian Church in Adel. Jean Schnoes

Jean Marie Schnoes, 66, died Sept. 26, 2024, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville after many years of medical issues with her neurodegenerative disease (olivopontocerebellar atrophy) that resulted in progressive deterioration of the nerve cells in her brain.
Jean was born on April 8, 1958, in Charles City and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1976. She graduated with her accounting degree at the University of Northern Iowa in May 1980. She worked at several accounting positions before retiring from Wells Fargo due to her health. She met Mike Schnoes while working in Des Moines, and they were married on May 19, 1984. After living in West Des Moines for a number of years, she and Mike moved to an acreage outside of Adel, where they enjoyed the country life, planting a garden every year and harvesting fruits from their many fruit trees. Jean also loved ice cream, which worked well with their purchase of the Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe.
Jean is survived by her brother, Mike, and his wife, Vickie, who took care of her during her final years at the Clarksville nursing home; brother-in-law, Rob, and his wife, Sandy; nieces and nephews: David Miller (Ambarlee), Chris Miller (Jennifer), Sarah Lodge (Luke), Adam Schnoes (Jeannie), and Joe Schnoes (Clara), as well as other relatives and her church friends and neighbors from the Adel area. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; and in-laws Leo and Jane Schnoes, Rick Schnoes and Teresa Schnoes.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel with family greeting friends one hour prior beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Booneville Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.

Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Anne Marshall

Kathleen “Kathy” Anne Marshall, 74, died Sept. 23, 2024. She was born April 1, 1950, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and grew up in Des Moines, where she attended St. Pius X Catholic School and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1969. She married John Carl Marshall on Jan. 5, 1990, in Des Moines. They spent their lives together in Adel until John’s death on Feb. 10, 2017.
Kathy was a member of De Soto Calvary Baptist Church. She loved cats, Faith Hill, the color green, and her Irish heritage. Kathy made sure everyone received greeting cards for birthdays and thank-yous and thinking-of-yous.
Kathy is survived by three children and their families: Raymond Banks, John Parcel and Coleen Carper; five siblings, Dennis (Peggy) Strode, Eileen (Kevin) Kehoe, Rick (Vivian) Strode, Margaret (Jeff) Berry and Mary Strode Pals; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Marshall; and her parents, Thomas and Dorothy Strode.
Visitation was Oct. 2 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel, followed by a graveside service at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, where Kathy was laid to rest with her husband, John.

Betty Irene Perkins

Betty Irene Perkins, 77, died Sept. 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. No services are planned at this time.
Betty Irene Johnson was born to William Fred Johnson and Lois Ione Silvers on Jan. 27, 1947, in Oskaloosa. She was the oldest of seven girls and was educated in the Des Moines school system, graduating from Des Moines North High School with the class of 1966.
Betty liked to keep busy and enjoyed working. She loved all of her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kathy. She is survived by her remaining sisters, Joyce (George) Fees, Peggy McVey, Vicky Bowen, Debbie (Duane) Coffman, and Mary (Dave) Avaux; and her best-friend, Margie McVey.

Mary Alice Landhuis

Mary Alice Landhuis died Sept. 15, 2024. She was born in November of 1935 in Ogden, the daughter of Harry and Clara Smith. Mary graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1953. She graduated from McPherson College in Kansas in 1957 with a dual bachelor’s degree in education and history. She was named to the Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society.
She married Dr. Leo Landhuis in June of 1957, a marriage that lasted 24 years. She taught P.E. and English at Wellman secondary school before the birth of her first child.
She continued her education at Stephens College, Missouri, graduating with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and biology in 1984. Her excellence in her studies earned her a spot in the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. Mary was a member of the Trinity Presbytery Church of Columbia, Missouri, for more than 50 years and served on many church committees.
She enjoyed quilting, reading, attending her children’s school and sports activities and attending Stephens College music and drama programs.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Delbert and Harold. She is survived by her sister, Etha; children, Louis, Mark, Laura (Ron) and Mary Jane (Brad); four grandchildren, James (Chase), Jessica, William and Addison; and one great-grandchild, Bennett. 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel with family greeting friends one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Shirley Marie Schick Berns

Shirley Marie Schick Berns, 90, died on Sept. 19, 2024, on her 70th wedding anniversary. Shirley was born on the Schick family farm southwest of Bayard on May 2, 1934, to Henry W. Schick and Iva M. Honold Schick. She was baptized June 3, 1934, and confirmed on March 21, 1948. She graduated from Bayard High School in 1952. She received a secretarial associate degree from AIB in Des Moines.
Shirley and Marvin Berns were married on Sept. 19, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Coon Rapids. He preceded her in death in 2022. They lived on a farm southwest of Lohrville for 54 years and, upon retirement in 2009, moved to Urbandale to be closer to family.
She was active in her church and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and doing outdoor work.
She is survived by her children, Donald (Pam) Berns, Renae (Brett) Johnson and Jana (Charles) Robertson; grandchildren, Chelsea (Steven) Binz, Kyle (Kari) Johnson, Courtney (Justin) Malicoat, Jack Robertson and Christina Robertson; great-grandson, Oliver Binz; sister, Elaine Schick Anderson; brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) Schick and Loren (Jane) Schick; sister-in-law, Carolyn Schick; brother-in-law, Raymond Diekman; and many other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brother, Donald Schick; brothers-in-law, Jerry Anderson and Dale (Bonnie) Berns; sister-in-law, Dorothy Diekman; nephews, Brian Schick, Tommy Berns, Brian Berns and Bruce Diekman; and parents-in-law, Harold and Lillian Berns.

Gloria Duffey

Gloria Duffey, 72, of Adel, died Aug. 19, 2024, at the Adel Acres Nursing Home. Gloria was born on Oct. 17, 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Mack and Maurita Duffey. She attended school in Adel and graduated in 1970. Gloria worked as a hairstylist after high school and enjoyed a long career spanning more than 40 years.
She liked to travel, visiting friends in California. Their children referred to her as their fairy godmother. Even though she always wished she had a bigger family, she considered all of her friends family. Gloria also loved her many fur babies and made sure to have a pet at all times.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 from 4-6 p.m. at the Raccoon Valley Community Building in Adel. Burial of the urn will take place at 3 p.m. in the Oakdale Cemetery. Willa Jeanne McCauley

Willa Jeanne McCauley, 85, known to everyone as Jeanne, died Sept. 10, 2024. She was born on Aug. 16, 1939, to Colan and Arwillda Green in the rural area of Confidence. She graduated from Corydon High School in 1957. In 1958, Jeanne married Bud McCauley. Together they built a life in Adel with their two children, Dennis and Mindy.
She enjoyed spending time at their house at the Lake of the Ozarks and snow skiing with family and friends. Jeanne and Bud even took a trip to Austria and skied in the Alps. Jeanne enjoyed singing in the church choir and participating in community musicals. She volunteered at church activities, the local food bank and as a poll worker. She enjoyed her card club and the Iowa State Fair.
In addition to her parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard and Victor Green. Jeanne is survived by her husband, Bud McCauley, and their son, Dennis, and his family, Nate McCauley, Callie and her husband, Jared Garoutte, and their daughter, Keagan; daughter, Mindy, and her husband, Jerry Kennedy, and their daughters, Jessica and Abigail Kennedy; her sisters, Joyce McKimbell and Mary Barton; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation services will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel from 5-7 p.m. Memorial services will be on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Adel. A light luncheon will be held following services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ADM Fine Arts Department.

Iva Ardell Jurgens

Iva Ardell (Cody/Berkland) Jurgens died on Aug. 7, 2024, at Independence Village in Waukee, with her family by her side. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at St. James Lutheran Church, 5665 Merle Hay Road, Johnston. There will be an interment service on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2:30 p.m. at South Saint John’s Cemetery, 5502 360th St., Cylinder.
Iva was born on Nov. 24, 1936, to Arthur and Ida Cody in Cylinder. She graduated from Cylinder High School. She was a cheerleader, active in band, and chosen to be the North Iowa Band Queen at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City. She graduated in 1955 then married Ronald Jurgens.
Together Ron and Iva lived in several communities in Iowa and Nebraska before moving to Johnston, Panora, and finally, Waukee. Iva was active in each of these communities through many volunteer services, their local churches, faith-based organizations and school activities while raising their family. Iva worked in retail sales and as a store manager. She and Ron retired in January 2004 before moving to Johnston to be closer to family.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Jurgens; children, Allan (Nancy) Jurgens, Brenda Jurgens, Monica (Lyle) Stutzman and Michael (Cindy) Jurgens; grandchildren, Alyssa (Mike) Mattson, Mikhala (Bryan) Stutzman Febel, Morgan Stutzman, Marin Jurgens and Bennett Jurgens; great grandchildren, Anna Mattson and Ryan Mattson; siblings/in-laws, Cora Lufkin and Arnold (Margie) Cody; and brothers-in-law, Denny Jurgens and Mike (Carole) Winterbank.
Iva is preceded in death by son, Roger; siblings, Kenny (Lois) Cody and Eleanor (James) Christianson; in-laws, Marlene (Bill) McCarthy, Myrna (Jim) Linnan and Marilyn Sanders; and brothers-in-law, Dean Lufkin and Gary Jurgens.

Lynnette Harvey

Lynnette (Hansen) Harvey, 78, of Adel, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Lynnette was born on Sept. 23, 1945, in Audubon. She was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Exira High School in 1964. She married Dan Harvey on Sept. 23, 1989, at the First United Methodist Church in Adel. Lynnette worked many jobs throughout her lifetime, but eventually settled and helped Dan own and operate Dan’s Towing in Adel.
Lynnette was a track star while in high school and was a record holder for many years. She also excelled at softball and basketball. Lynnette and Dan enjoyed traveling and visiting casinos. She liked to tend to her garden and flowers. She had a knack for decorating the most beautiful Christmas tree for the holidays. Her dogs were always treated like her children, and she loved every one of them over the years.
Lynnette gave many people the gift of tissue donation upon her death.
Lynnette is survived by her husband, Dan; three sons, Matthew (Angela) Immel, Michael (Teresa) Immel and Mark (Elizabeth) Downing; sister, Sharon Vonesh; grandchildren, Amber (Jon) Oiler, Titan (Lauren) Immel, Joshua Downing, Samantha (Adam) Walter, Jeremiah (Reagan) Downing and Ashley, Alexander, Zoe and James ”Jimmy” Downing; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard “Babe” and Nyretta Hansen; brother, Larry Hansen; and brother-in-law, Merlin “Butch” Vonesh.

Rosemary T. Yetter, 91, of Johnston, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Aug. 23, at St. Mary of Nazareth Church in Des Moines. A visitation with a rosary was Aug. 22 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. Interment was at Glendale Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Born on May 2, 1933, in Des Moines, Rosemary’s mother died when Rosemary was just 10 years old, leading to her and some of her siblings being placed at the St. Anthony Orphanage in Sioux City.
Rosemary married Charles D. Yetter Nov. 4, 1950. They were members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverdale, a place that held a special place in Rosemary’s heart. In 1968, Rosemary and Chuck started a thoroughbred horse business. Rosemary worked at Iowa Realty for 15 years, managed five different motels and spent countless hours on the farm.
Rosemary is survived by her children, Jane (Roger) Hargens, Patrick Yetter and Benjamin (Tammy) Yetter; six grandchildren, Carey (Curt) Verschuure, Amanda Hargens, MacKailey (Ben) Johnson, Madison (Drake) Allen,  Adeline Hargens and Nori Rose Hargens; two great grandchildren, Lincoln and Penelope Allen; one brother, Dan Roberts; two sisters, Joan Roberts and Michael Roberts-Wagner; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; son, Charlie Mike; and grandsons, Ryan and Jeremy.

Dicky Lee Thompson

Dicky Lee Thompson, 83, died on Aug. 11, 2024. Visitation was Thursday, Aug 15 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home and Crematory-Adel Chapel. A memorial service was Friday, Aug. 16, at the Van Meter Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Interment follows at the Booneville Cemetery in Waukee. Dicky Lee Thompson was born on Dec. 9, 1940. He was raised in the Linden and Redfield areas of Dallas County and graduated from Dexfield High School. Dick worked a variety of jobs, ultimately retiring from the Meredith Corporation.
He enjoyed showing horses and attending shows at the fairs. He hunted animals and mushrooms while also engaging in frogging and fishing. He enjoyed coaching girls softball and men’s slowpitch. He was a fan of the Van Meter Bulldogs and the Iowa State Cyclones. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, as well as going to races at the Boone Speedway.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie, parents, five brothers, five sisters and grandson, Devon Slycord.
He is survived by his children, Carrie, Sheiry (Jason Slycord), Courtney, Amanda, Landan, (Kristen), Wendy, Robyn (Jeff Lund), and Nancy (Chuck Bucinski); 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his  brother, Billy; sister, Susan; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann Roberts

Mary Ann Roberts, 92, a former mayor of Johnston, died July 27, 2024, following a brief illness. Mary Ann was born on Feb. 8, 1932 in Des Moines. She was a lifelong resident of Johnston and lived on her great grandfather Jacob A. Rittgers’ original land most of her life. Her father, Robert J. Rittgers, built the home she shared with her husband, Charles, and together they raised five children.
Mary Ann was mayor of Johnston in the 1980s and remained active in politics until her death. In the 1990s and 2000s, she operated a catering business and jointly operated a coffee shop with her son, Chuck. She is remembered by her family as frugal, artistic, politically astute and always ready to lend an ear to her children and grandchildren, and a Rittgers through and through.
Survivors include her children, Rebecca (John) Becker, Deborah (Milton) Vaughan, Julia (Ron Stout) Roberts, Marjorie Fickes and Charles B. (Cindy) Roberts; grandchildren, Tiffany (John) Anderson, Deanne Cerne, Robert Fickes, William (Susan) Fickes and Dylan Vaughan; and great grandchildren, Margaret and Tucker Anderson. Preceding her in death was husband, Charles Lowell Roberts, and sister, Carol Dickenson.
A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Burial was at Rittgers Family Cemetery, Johnston, immediately following the funeral.

David John Babcock

David John Babcock, 96, died July 27, 2024, at the Brio of Johnston. He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Sandusky, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 30, 1946, to July 31, 1947, serving as a medical tech. He met Maxine Marek while they were both serving in the army. They married on May 1, 1947, and had eight children. David was employed his entire married life in the trucking industry until retirement from Crouse Cartage Company.
David is survived by his children, John (Carolyn) Babcock, Tom (Dorothy) Babcock, Mark (Linda) Babcock, Bill (Anne) Babcock, Katherine (Daniel) Hundt, Carolyn (Johnny) Merical and Bruce (Sherri) Babcock; 27 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and brother, Robert Babcock (age 100). He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, on Oct. 19, 2007; son, Jeffrey Babcock; and grandson Joseph Babcock.
Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, with a Mass of a Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, with the U.S. Army providing the military honors and VFW Post 9127 Honor Guard providing the rifle volley.

Sharon was born on Aug. 6, 1940, in Grand Island, Nebraska, and graduated from Grand Island High School. She lived in Denver, Colorado, before moving to Southern California, where she met her husband of 53 years, Ron Cooper. They eventually moved back to Iowa, where they made their home and raised their son, Randy.
Sharon had a fulfilling career at Mercy Medical Center, from which she retired after many years of dedicated service. Sharon was loved by her co-workers and known for her caring nature and commitment to helping others. In her retirement, Sharon cherished outings with her friends and was an active member of the Red Hat Society. Sharon also enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Ron Cooper; son, Randy Cooper, and his wife, Emily; stepchildren, Cephus Cooper-Payne, Doris Lourance and Misty Todd; brother-in-law, Denny Cooper; sisters-in-law, Melody Cooper and Connie Boucher; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mort, Stanley and Sandy Booth.

Sara E. “Sally” Sutton, D.O. died on July 27, 2024, after a long professional career including family practice and osteopathic manual medicine in Renwick, Fort Dodge and Des Moines. She retired at the age of 88.
Sally is survived by her sister, Mary Grace (Don) Washburn; sister-in-law, June Sutton; as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins including Barb and Chris. She was pre-deceased by brothers, Gerald H. and James Craig Sutton; sister-in-law, Calista; and nephew and niece, William, Stan, Gery Sutton, Mark Washburn and Barb Sutton.
Sally was born on July 6, 1926, in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She attended Drake University, Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, to study pipe organ and voice, and graduated in 1953 from (then) D.M. Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery (now D.M. University). Drake bestowed a Doctorate in Humane Letters upon her on May 10, 1990. She organized and sang in the Ft. Dodge Choral Society.
She served as an adjunct professor, F.P. faculty at DMU, director of the F.P. Residency program at D.M. General Hospital and established a practice in osteopathic manipulation in her home.
Sally held many offices in her district and state osteopathic organizations, including as president of the American Academy of Osteopathy.
Sally was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1995 until she joined Plymouth United Church of Christ in 2013. She was also a member of Chapter KT of PEO. In 2003, she published “Dr. Sally’s Cookbook — With and Without Sin!”
Person

Thomas W. Person

Thomas W. Person, 80, died on July 25, 2024, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held July 30 at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Tom was born Aug. 17, 1943, in Ida Grove. He attended Des Moines Tech High School where he played baseball and graduated in 1961. After a short time at Grand View University, he entered the Air Force and would go on to earn top secret clearance as a Russian voice interceptor during the Cold War. At this time, he met his best friend in life, Don Larkin, of West Friendship, Maryland. Upon return to the United States, he worked as a carpenter and was a member of Carpenter’s Local Union 106. In May of 1967, he married Jane Renaud, his wife of more than 57 years. They had two sons, Brad and Bryan. After life as a carpenter, Tom went into construction sales and management for Stetson Building Products. He then retired as a representative from ACD Group. He also worked as a private investigator for nearly 30 years, spending much of that time working for those who were wrongly accused. He ended his career at 80 years old working for Gratias Investigations. As a 38-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Tom spent much of his time mentoring and helping those struggling with addiction.
Tom’s passions in life were hunting and fishing, writing poetry and authoring four books, attending sports events of his boys and later his granddaughters, offering coaching and support. Most important to Tom was his family and time spent with them.
Tom is survived by his wife Jane; brother, Steve; sons, Brad (Monica) and Bryan (Marcia); granddaughters, Bailee Rauenhorst (Joseph), Erin Person, Cailey Person, Brylee Person, Danielle Person and Macy Person.

Aaron Matthew Walker

Aaron Matthew Walker, 37, of Urbandale, died July 25, 2024, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Memorial services are Friday, Aug. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1986, to Randy and Maria (Newton) Walker in Washington, Iowa. Aaron graduated from ADM High School, where he was an active and talented athlete, playing baseball, football and basketball. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Miami Dolphins throughout his life.
He graduated from the University of Iowa and had a successful career in the insurance industry with Nationwide and Berkley. Aaron loved being surrounded by friends and family. His vibrant personality and love for music brought joy to everyone who knew him. He had an uncanny ability to make those around him feel special and cherished.
He is survived by his parents, Randy and Maria of Adel; brother, Adam Walker; grandparents, Jim and Marcia Wilson and Raymond and Mary Dickinson; aunts and uncles, Eric and Marsha Newton, Gary and Cindy Blunier and Kerry and Joe Hadley; many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Don Newton and Don Walker.

Jack Eugene Chapman

Jack Eugene Chapman was born Jan. 10, 1937, in Winterset to Buck McKibben and Nola Baker. Jack’s father, Buck, mother, Nola McKibben, and sister, Marilyn Hutchins, preceded him in death. Jack is survived by his spouse of 64 years, Gretchen Chapman (Westphal); son, Jeff Chapman (Suzy); grandchildren, Mitch Patterson, Jacob Chapman (Carli), Clint Chapman (Madeline), Grace Chapman (Lucas); and great-grandchild Leo Patterson.
Jack attended school in Adel before joining the military and serving in the 101st Airborne Division. He was employed in many vocations, from police officer to regional manager at Goodyear, where he spent most of his professional career. In his “retirement” years, Jack worked part-time at Adel TV & Appliance. Jack was also a longstanding member of the American Legion in Adel and served in the honor guard, where he helped hundreds of veterans lay to rest. He served as a referee for high school football games for nearly two decades, served on the Adel City Council, and served in the Army Rangers.

Mary Elizabeth (Williams) Ervin

Mary Elizabeth (Williams) Ervin was born Sept. 6, 1923. She graduated from Humeston High School in 1940 where she was active in music and sports. She attended Simpson College, Indianola, where she received her standard elementary certificate and taught a few years in the public schools of Milo and Knoxville before marrying Robert W. Ervin of Milo in 1944. Robert served his country during WWII in both the European and Pacific theaters. After Bob was discharged, they lived in Lake Mills, Milo and Atlantic. Mary worked as the adult education coordinator for Iowa Western Community College and also as the public relations director with Cass County Hospital in Atlantic.
Mary Elizabeth is survived by one child, Mary B. Ervin; two grandchildren, Kate Thiel (Mitch) and Brent Gangestad (Erin); one great grandchild, Griffin Bertholf; sister, Faye Mark; sister-in-law, Charlene Ervin; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert Ervin preceded her in death in 1982 and her son, J. Samuel Ervin, preceded her in death in 2015. In 1987 she married Thomas Billings of San Diego, California. Thomas Billings preceded her in death in 2010. Tom’s daughters, Judy, Betty and Sue, survive. Mary is also preceded in death by sister, Martha Ford; brother, Harold Williams, and sister, Phyllis Williams.
She was involved in the arts and enjoyed tennis and golf. After retirement, she lived in California and Arizona for 25 years before moving back to Iowa in 2009 to be near family.
Mary’s cremated remains will be buried at Indianola at a later date. Mary requested that there be no services.

Sister Virginia Bartholome

Sister Virginia Bartholome, CHM, 100, died July 13, 2024, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Services were at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel Tuesday, July 16. A memorial service was held in Davenport at the Humility of Mary Center Magnificat Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial, followed by interment, was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Virginia Mary Bartholome was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Great Falls, Montana. She entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in 1943 and professed vows in 1946 as Sister Marita.
She was a librarian and business teacher before serving as the head librarian at Marycrest College, where she oversaw the construction of a new library in 1958 and its expansions in 1966 and 1968. She continued her studies then returned to Great Falls and worked until her retirement in 1996 as a reference librarian for the Great Falls Public Library. She then spent over a decade, from 1997 to 2009, working in the University of Great Falls’ Archives, organizing the collection. After retiring again, she served in a ministry of prayer and witness at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center.
Sister Virginia served as president of the Iowa Library Association in 1970. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, an active member of St. Ann’s Cathedral in Great Falls, and worked with ministries aiding prisoners, the sick, the homebound, and those living in nursing homes. Before entering the community, she was a volunteer nurse aide during World War II.

Petersen

Laverne ‘Bud’ Lyle Petersen

Laverne “Bud” Lyle Petersen, 89, died July 13, 2024, at The Bridges in Ankeny. He was born Aug. 25, 1934, in Jacksonville Township. He graduated from Harlan High School. He helped his father farm the worked at Crystal Springs Creamery in Kimballton before serving in the Marine Reserves from 1951 to 1955.
On April 16, 1955, Bud married Bernice Petersen in Audubon. He joined the U.S. Army on April 26, 1955, and was stationed in Japan for two years. He then worked as a livestock buyer for much of his career before retiring from Excel Corporation in 2000. Bud and Bernice spent their winters in Mission, Texas, for 18 years. In November of 2022, they moved from Harlan to Johnston to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals, but his true passion was golf. He enjoyed traveling to watch golf tournaments with his son, Mike. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bernice Petersen; his three children, Kathy Goetz (Roger), Mike Petersen (Patti) and Brenda Heggen (Chris); grandchildren, Chris Petersen, Adam (Dana) Goetz, Ali Anderssen (Blake), Katie (Nick) McClure, Paul Heggen, Jacqueline Heggen and Meredith Heggen; great-grandchildren, Salvatore Goetz, Quinn Saunders, Malcolm McClure, Valentino Goetz and Maeve McClure; sister, Delores Nordby; brothers-in-law, Bill Petersen, Dick (Linda) Petersen and Tom (Wanda) Petersen; and other relatives and many friends. Bud was preceded in death by brother-in-law Milo Nordby; sisters- in law, Beverly Harrison and Billie Petersen; and niece, Penny Nordby.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2024, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Congregational UCC & United Methodist Mission Church, 1211 19th St., Harlan. A luncheon will be served at the church following the memorial service. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Dr. Donald Eugene Hanlon

Dr. Donald Eugene Hanlon, 92, formerly of Adel, died Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at The Bridges at Ankeny Senior Living. Visitation and Rosary were July 18 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee. Burial followed at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
Don was born June 26, 1932, in Perry. He graduated from St Patrick’s Catholic High School, studied at Loras College and Iowa State College and, in 1959, graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. Don practiced medicine in Lohrville for a short time and then in Bayard for six years. He married Dorene Hirschberg in 1965 and relocated to Adel in 1966 where Don took over the Adel Clinic medical practice.
Don practiced in Adel for nearly 37 years and was known for his quiet, humble nature and dedication to his patients; many he considered to be great friends. Besides his career, Don enjoyed spending time at Lake Panorama with his family, working on do-it-yourself projects, bicycling or rollerblading along the trails in Adel, swimming laps at the pool, pursuing his interest in family history, and setting up his holiday nativity scene that featured lights and music.
He is survived by his six daughters, Renee (Bill) Spratt, Michele Hanlon, Lisa (Mark) Mickelson, Christine (Dean) Tranel, Bridget (George) Jaegers, and Andrea (Matt) Patitz; nine grandchildren, Kylie (Alberto) Lara, Emily (Jared) Calvert, Hailey Mickelson, Elizabeth Tranel, Collin Spratt, Josie and Vivi Patitz, and Kelsey and Ian Jaegers; great-grandsons, Zeke and Eli Lara; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorene; brothers, Lawrence, Francis, Bernard and Jerry; and a sister, Mary Ellen Putnam.

Genevieve (Brewer) Rutledge

Genevieve (Brewer) Rutledge, 94, of Adel, died at Mercy West Hospital in West Des Moines on Friday, July 5, 2024. Memorial services were Wednesday, July 10, at Adel United Methodist Church. The family greeted friends and family July 9 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel.
Carol was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Early to Dr. Cleaves Reitzell Brewer and Zaidee Stanford. After graduating Early High School, she attended Morningside College in Sioux City, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music. She and John Perry Rutledge, also of Early, were married Dec. 26, 1950. They moved to York, Nebraska, in 1953 and Adel in 1970.
Carol performed for 18 years as a violinist with the Des Moines Symphony. As an accomplished pianist, she taught for many years. Carol was a member of Adel United Methodist Church, accompanying services on the piano and singing tenor in the choir. After retiring from West Central Mental Health Center, she volunteered at the Adel Public Library and enjoyed studying Spanish at ADM High School.
Carol’s skills in wood carving resulted in a ribbon from the Iowa State Fair and many fine pieces that she enjoyed giving to friends and family. She was similarly adept at cooking, baking and gardening. Her grandkids relished their holiday visits.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Jean Cowles; and dear friend, Judy Forsman of Adel.
She is survived by her brother, Leon S. “Doc” Brewer; son, Scott; daughters, Barbara (Ted) Raife and Jean Couch; grandchildren, Patrick (Brenda Trenter) Rutledge, Tim Rutledge, Thomas (Sabrina) Rutledge, Dan Marshall, George (Amy) Raife, John Raife, Annie (Katy Porte) Raife, Megan (Isaac) Sprague and Michael (Ishea) Couch; and eight great-grandchildren.

Patricia Ann Rickert

Patricia Ann Rickert, 75, of Adel, died Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Karen Acres Health Care Center. Patricia was born in Leon on Sept. 26, 1948, to Vern Williams and Barbara (Hartnell) Williams. She attended Mormon Trail High School in Garden Grove and graduated in 1966. She married Ronald Rickert on Feb.3, 1968, and they spent more than 50 years together.
Patricia worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and attending their events. She will be remembered as an incredible mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald Rickert; her infant daughter, Michelle Rickert; her in-laws, Roy and Louise Rickert; her nephew, Mike Middlebrook; and her niece, Staci Middlebrook.
She is survived by her daughter, Nicole (Jamie) Morey; son, Clay (Gretchen) Rickert; grandchildren, Devin and Savannah Morey and Liv and Luke Rickert; sister, Kay (Dennis) Middlebrook; nieces, Carla (Shane) Housley and Mendy Middlebrook; and other extended family members.

Robert Charles Gilmer

Robert Charles Gilmer, 69, of Grimes, died at his home on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Robert was born in Des Moines on May 9, 1955, to William Gilmer and Grace (Crouse) Gilmer. He was raised alongside his four siblings in Adel and graduated from Adel High School.
Robert worked many jobs throughout his career but was most recently a courier with Iowa Pathology Associates. Those who knew Robert the best would describe him as outgoing and friendly. He was known for managing to find someone he knew no matter where they went. He also enjoyed trains and riding horses at his friends’ farms.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Kathryn Reed; and his brother, Thomas Gilmer. He is survived by his partner of almost 20 years, Paula Roys; his son, Travis Gilmer; his brothers, Bill (Marcia) Gilmer and David Gilmer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lois M. Mills

Lois M. Mills, 95, died June 27, 2024, at the Adel Acres Care Center. Funeral services were Wednesday, July 3 at the Dallas Center United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member. Burial was in the Brethren Cemetery, Dallas Center.
Lois was born on Nov. 1, 1928, to Ernest and Mellie (Rhoads) Moser. She was a school teacher for the Dallas Center school district for many years, retiring in 1976. Lois also worked for Brenton Banks for several more years.
She is survived by her sons, Brian and Kent Mills; grandchildren, Chris and Sarah; and three great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; son, Ernest; and grandson, Thomas. Memorial contributions may be directed to Dallas Center United Methodist Church.
Myrna weiland

Myrna Weiland

Myrna Weiland, 86, died June 19, 2024. She was born on May 21, 1937, at home in Atwater, Minnesota. She graduated from high school in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and received her associate’s degree at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She taught in Michigan, Illinois and Missouri. She married Lloyd Weiland on July 31, 1960, in Minneapolis. The couple served in various Lutheran congregations over the years. Myrna filled many roles at church including choir director, bible class and circle leader. An accomplished musician, she often was called upon to accompany choirs, as well as sing at weddings, funerals and more. Loyd and Myrna retired in Johnston to be closer to their kids.
Myrna enjoyed pinochle card parties, family lake time in Minnesota, and attending her children’s, grandchildren’s and great grandchild’s sporting, music and other important life events. After husband Lloyd passed, Myrna experienced a “second wind” at McAuley Terrace in Johnston. She enjoyed filling her days by lunching with neighbors, playing bingo, listening to performers and attending chapel service.
Myrna is survived by her daughter, Beth (Doug) Quam; sons, Todd (Elizabeth Stieneke) Weiland and Troy (Jeffrey Niemann) Weiland; grandchildren, Devan (Sydney) and Landon (Alyssa) Quam and Jacob Weiland; and great-grandchild, Hallie Quam. She was preceded in death by husband, Lloyd; son, Brent; infant son, Jonathon; and many other beloved family members.

Jeanine Lynch, 70, of Johnston died Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Visitation was June 28 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale. Funeral services were June 29 at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
Jeanine was a graduate of East High School in 1971, The University of Northern Iowa in 1975, and Drake University in 1988. She married Stan Lynch on May 31, 1975. She taught in the Johnston School District for 41 years. When not teaching, she enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her lake house in Clear Lake.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eva and Henry Thorsheim; sister, Julie (Thorsheim) Westlund; and husband, Stan (2017). She is survived by her sons, Nathan (Rebecca) Lynch and Jeff (Dani Kohut) Lynch; and grandchildren, Henry, Annabelle, Nora and Stella.

Shirley Ann Button

Shirley Ann Button, 92, of Adel, died June 12, 2024, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 18 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel with burial following at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
Shirley was born in Des Moines to Verne and Kathleen Jenkins on Jan. 16, 1932. She grew up in Adel, graduating in 1950, and then attended Drake University. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Harold “Bub” Button, on Aug. 19, 1951, and had three daughters and three sons.
Shirley and Bub enjoyed traveling with the children to Minnesota and Colorado. In later life, they experienced trips to Germany and Nova Scotia, and spent 24 years “snow-birding” in Destin, Florida.
Survivors are her children, Becky (Dave) Andersen, Dan (Shari), Julie (Mark) Kluber, Cindy (Randy) Stefani, David (Teri), and Rob (Erica); grandchildren, Brooke (Mikkel) Jakobsen, Alyssa Sablan, Brad (Shelley) Button, Chad Button, Jordan (Christine) Kluber, Jaelynn (John) Tomlinson, Ryan (Courtney Schultz) Stefani, Kelsey (Emily) Stefani, Brett (Megan) Stefani, Kasey (Trent) Geurts, Jake Button, Cole (Maggie) Button, Nick (Jackie) Button, Josh (Nazareth) Button, Chelsea Button, Jason Sheehy, and Brian (Sarah) Sheehy; brother-in-law, Dennis (Judy) Button; sister-in-law, Joyce Button; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Knoll

Kent Leroy Knoll

Kent Leroy Knoll, 73, of Adel, died Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at his home. Kent was born in Des Moines on March 20, 1951, to Ivan Knoll and Lola (Wicks) Knoll. He was raised alongside his sister, Gayle, and his two brothers, Burke and Bruce. He attended ADM schools for several years and continued to cheer on the Tigers throughout his life. He was even inducted into the ADM Hall of Fame as their biggest fan, an honor that Kent was proud to display.
He enjoyed going to country concerts with his siblings, cheering on the Hawkeyes, and going out to dinner or to the mall with family. He was a pillar of Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in Adel where he made many lasting friendships. Thanks to the help of his electric wheelchair, Kent was able to enjoy all Adel had to offer, including the Sweet Corn Festival and the rodeo. He also looked forward to going to the Iowa State Fair every year.
Thanks to the caretakers at Mainstream Living, Kent was able to spend time at home while still receiving the support he needed. He enjoyed working on his computer, doing research and keeping his siblings informed about the family’s medical history. He never let his disability determine what he could do.
Something that Kent held close to his heart was his time spent at Camp Sunnyside every summer, where he created amazing memories. Kent will be remembered as an incredible brother, uncle and friend to many.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings, Gayle (Richard) Arnburg, Burke (Robyn) Knoll and Bruce (Beth) Knoll; his nieces and nephews, Dustin (Marcy) Conover, Wade (Ashley) Conover, Rachel (Bradon) Knoll, Kyle (Cassie) Knoll and Cole Knoll; as well as seven great nieces and many close friends.
A visitation was held May 20 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in Adel with a service there May 21. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery.

Harold ‘Ray’ Crannell

Harold Raymond “Ray” Crannell, 90, of Adel, died on Monday, May 6, 2024, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City surrounded by family. Ray was born in Bouton on Christmas Eve in 1933. He spent his childhood on his family farm and graduated from Perry High School. After graduation, he entered the service. Ray served in the Korean War from 1953-1957 as a member of the United States Air Force repairing B29 Bomber plane engines. Upon his return from the service, Ray started his career as a hog buyer.
It was near his family home that Ray met the love of his life, Glenna Barnett, at the Lake Robbins Ballroom. They married on June 21, 1959, and raised four children together. They enjoyed listening to classic country music and dancing, finding hidden treasures at garage sales, traveling in their camper, and spending time with family. In his free time, Ray enjoyed tending to his yard/garden, tinkering in his garage, and creating woodworking projects. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Glenna; his siblings, Helen, Doris, Donald and Roger; and his son, Steven Crannell.
Those left to cherish Ray’s memory are his children, Michael (Alison) Crannell, Lisa (Dave Vajgrt) Gassman, and Matthew (Malinda) Crannell; his daughter-in-law, Vicki Crannell; his siblings, Larry (Linda) Crannell, JoAnn Noack and Donna Acklin; his sister-in-law, Dorthea Peterson; and eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Terry Lee Clark

Terry Lee Clark, 76, of Adel, died Friday, May 3, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 19 at Caldwell Parish Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 1-3 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 3 p.m. Committal services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, with a luncheon following at the Van Meter Legion.
Terry was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Des Moines. He graduated from Van Meter Community School in 1966. He attended Grand View University before joining the United States Air Force in 1968. He was united in marriage to Deanna (Dee) Dooley on Nov. 9, 1968. They were blessed with two children, Jeff Clark and Dana Clark.
After many years of working at Firestone in Des Moines, Terry eventually retired from the U.S. Postal Service and Iowa National Guard. He maintained the family farm in rural Van Meter and was a member of the Van Meter Legion Post 403.
Terry is survived by his daughter, Dana Clark, and her two children, Irelynn and Finn, all of Adel; additional granddaughters, Cassidy (Brandon) Abrams and Stormi (Austin) Reichle; grandson Zachary Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Adam Mitchell and Ezekiel and Lane Abrams; sisters, Patti Clark of Adel and Tina Putnam of Grimes; sister-in-law Davia (Chuck) Kahle; brothers-in-law Fr. Thomas Dooley and Steve Lininger; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Deanna; son, Jeff Clark; brother, Ronald Clark; sister, Cheryl Connelly; sisters-in-law, Patricia Hamilton, Kathleen (Kandy) Lininger and Judy Clark.
Terry enjoyed taking a drive in his 1962 Corvette, enjoying conversation over a cup of coffee or a few beers, but, most importantly, spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Michael Clark

Michael Clark, 76, of Winterset, died at the Iowa VA Hospital in Des Moines on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Mike was born on April 20, 1948, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He proudly served his country in the Army. He worked as an appliance repair technician for many years, first at his own business, Alco Appliance, then at Adel Winterset TV & Appliance. He married Sandra Lynn Newby in Mt. Ayr on Oct. 24, 1978.
Mike enjoyed working in the garage, riding motorcycles and cars, and fishing. He always said he had the fastest car in Sarasota County and was a nomadic motorcycle enthusiast. In his younger years, he raced motorcycles and stock cars. He liked to garden with his wife, Sandy, and was always proud to be a father to four girls, Michelle, Mindy, Melissa and Kimmie.
Mike is survived by his daughters, Melissa and Kimmie Clark; cousin, Buddy Clark; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy; daughters, Michelle and Mindy Clark.
Funeral services were held May 7 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. Burial of cremated remains took place May 8 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery with military honors. Marjorie Ann “Margie” Katzmann

Marjorie Ann “Margie” Katzmann, 88, of Johnston died April 25, 2024, in McAllen, Texas. Funeral services were Saturday, May 4, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Visitation was prior to the service. Interment for Margie and Jerry will be held at Lincoln Cemetery near Granger.
Margie was born May 17, 1935, in Des Moines, where she lived most of her life. She worked for the Des Moines Public School lunch program for many years and retired in 1999. On July 8, 1994, she married Gerald “Jerry” Katzmann at Zion Lutheran Church, Des Moines, where they were active in the church choir. Margie and Jerry had a great love for music. They provided music and entertainment to local care centers, Iowa State Fair and the Pharr South Jams in Pharr, Texas. They also enjoyed fishing and spending winters in Pharr, Texas.
Margie was a member of the Des Moines Women’s Club, Des Moines Corvette Club, a Hall of Famer with the PMECI (Professional Musician and Entertainers Club of Iowa) and the Pharr South Trio.
Margie loved her family, and one of her favorite things was being “Mooga” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Margie is survived by her children, Jim (Siriluck) Baker, Joyce (Paul) Binder and Jeff (Becky) Baker; four grandchildren, Jessica (Dustin) Stevens, Sarah (Jason) DeLaet, Ashlee (Tristan) Harringa and Brett Baker; numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; a nephew, John (Debbie) Marmon and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, on Dec. 25, 2022; her parents, Merle “Red” and Frances (Steele) Scobee; her twin sister, Margaret McConnell; and her brothers, Jimmy and Kenny Scobee.

Helen “Joyce” Dunbar, 90, of Earlham, died Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Community Care Center in Stuart. She was born Dec. 12, 1933, and graduated from De Soto High School in 1951. On Oct. 24, 1951, she married Darrell A. Dunbar in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They made their home in rural Adel and had five children: Nancy, Mike, Loren, Glenda and Susan. Joyce and Darrell shared 60 loving years together.
Joyce was a homemaker. She enjoyed her soap operas, playing solitaire, reading and playing games, especially with friends and family. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing, making many gifts, dance costumes, quilts and wedding dresses over the years. Over the years, she decorated countless birthday cakes and wedding cakes. She was named grand champion for a wedding cake she decorated.
She was a member of the De Soto United Methodist Church where she served in many roles for the United Methodist Women (UMW). She became a well known candy and noodle maker for the UMW’s annual fundraisers.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her seven siblings; her husband, Darrell; her son, Mike; and her granddaughter, Jennifer Sly (Heaberlin). She is survived by her children, Nancy (Chris) Jensen, Loren Dunbar, Glenda (David) Heaberlin, and Susan (Tom) Jenkins; her 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and four great, great grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.
A visitation for Joyce will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home Adel Chapel, with a service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in De Soto. Mary Carol Beech, 94, of Adel, died April 5, 2024, at Spurgeon Manor Nursing Home in Dallas Center. A visitation and service for Mary were held on Saturday, April 20, at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Burial followed at Oakdale Cemetery.
Mary was born in Perry on March 4, 1930. She graduated from Adel High School in 1948. Mary attended AIB in Des Moines; worked for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines; and, in 1958, she went to Denver, Colorado. She worked for Exxon Corporation (Carter Oil, Humble) for 32 years and was a legal assistant when she retired in 1990.
In 1967, Mary married Charlie in Denver where they worked and lived for 35 years. After retirement, they enjoyed golf and cruising and spending time with family and friends in several states. They spent several years in The Villages in Florida and winters in Arizona with Debbie, Kaylee and Rodney. In 2004, Mary and Charlie moved to Adel. Mary enjoyed her flower garden, the computer, reading, bridge and family and friends.
Mary is survived by her step-daughter, Debbie; her grandchildren, Kaylee and Rodney, Jr.; great grandson, Rodney III; brother-in-law, Mike (Mary Ann) Beech; many nieces and nephews; and wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her special person and husband, Charlie Beech, her parents, and her siblings, Floyd, Margie and Paul (Helen).

Janet Lee Wahlert

Janet Lee Wahlert, 69, of Adel died on Monday, April 8, 2024, at Spurgeon Manor Nursing Home in Dallas Center. Janet was born in Des Moines on Oct. 3, 1954. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Hoover High School where she was a state champion swimmer. Her ability for swimming led her to swim under scholarship at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. Janet was also an avid skier and member of a competitive ski team in the Des Moines area. She married Lee Wahlert on Sept. 22, 1979. They spent the last 20 years together owning and operating River Valley Golf Course in Adel.
Janet’s life revolved around service. Whether it was helping patients with muscular dystrophy, volunteering at the Red Cross, or working with children with special needs, Janet was there to lend a helping hand. She also worked as a nurse for several years, was a volunteer with Boy and Girl Scouts, and was the head coach of the ADM dance team for many years. Not only did Janet take care of members of her community, but she also prided herself on taking care of her family and loved to be involved in any activities her kids or grandkids participated in.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul Ford.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 45 years, Lee Wahlert; her children, Roxanne (Joseph) Dardano, Matt Wahlert and Curt (Andrea) Wahlert; her grandchildren, Beau Wahlert, Lilee Wahlert, Isabella Dardano and Noah Dardano; her brother, Jim Ford; her great aunt, Lil; and many cousins and friends.
Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon celebrating Janet’s life from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday April 24, at the Veterans Reception Center in Van Meter.

Elizabeth May Albrecht

Elizabeth May Albrecht, known as “Liz” and “Nana,” 87, died in her home in Johnston on April 10, 2024. She was born on Aug. 26, 1936, in Yankton, South Dakota. Liz attended Yankton College and Iowa State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in home economics/child development. At Iowa State, she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and Iowa State NAIAD Synchronized Swimming Club.
She taught in Boone. After her 17-year teaching career, Liz moved to the Des Moines area and received her master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation from Drake University in 1983 and shortly after began her career at Intracorp/Cigna as an area manager until her retirement. After retirement she served as an expert witness for Social Security Disability for many years.
Liz was a lifelong swimmer, taught Red Cross Swimming lessons, and participated in water exercise groups. Liz, along with her husband, Lynn, enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, trips to Canada, boating at Lake Okoboji, Saylorville, and Big Creek as well as spending time with family and friends and sharing memories of her past. She served as Iowa local chapter lead of the National Alopecia Foundation and volunteered at the ARL in Des Moines.
Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenz Lynn Albrecht, and brother, Robert L. Perry. She is survived by her children, Becky Wilson (Kevin), Jon Barstad (Kat), Perry Barstad (Carrie) and Sue Thompson (Brent); her grandchildren, Hali Woods, Nick Thompson, Grant Thompson, Owen Barstad and Liv Barstad; her great grandchildren, Damien, Armani, and Desi, and her beloved dog, Eddie.

Judy Kay Forsman

Judy K. Forsman, 84, of Adel, died April 5, 2024, at Spurgeon Manor from complications of dementia. A visitation was held Thursday, April 11, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel. The funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, at the Adel United Methodist Church. Burial follows at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
Judy was born May 9, 1939, in New Hampton and graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1957. She then attended AIB in Des Moines, lived at the Des Moines YMCA and played basketball for “LOOK” magazine. Judy married Donald Forsman on May 31, 1959. Judy was a stay-at-home mother until the children were in school full days. She worked at the Dallas County extension office followed by secretarial duties at an Adel law firm. She worked at McCalley Funeral Home and enjoyed interacting with people, providing them support, and driving the hearse.
Judy was a long-time member of the Adel United Methodist Church and was greatly involved with the UMW.  She became “the nut lady” every fall when the UMW had their annual nut sale fundraiser. She enjoyed the adventure of traveling. She and Don camped at the Iowa State Fair for nearly 30 years. Judy volunteered for the Blue Ribbon Foundation manning an exhibit and selling water or the famous Fair Squares. Judy also enjoyed time in her yard and gardens, feeding the birds and collecting nativities.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, and spouse. She is survived by a brother, Jerry (Marsha) Whitnable; son, Scott (Hollie) Forsman; daughter, Joni (Kenny) Williams; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and several extended family members.

Michael Trevor Riggen

Michael “Mike” Trevor Riggen, 55, of Adel died April 6, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Mike was born on Oct. 10, 1968, in Brookings, South Dakota.
 Mike enjoyed watching NASCAR and was rarely seen without one of his many Iowa Hawkeye hats or Green Bay Packer jerseys on game day. He enjoyed listening to 1980s big hair bands and knew his music trivia well. He enjoyed his family gatherings and talking with friends, but most of all loved being a dad and a grandfather.
He was a machinist most of his adult career and worked at Frigidaire, Osmundson Manufacturing, Progressive Foundry, Wiese Industries and Louis Dreyfus Company.
 Mike was preceded in death by his father, Brett Riggen, and stepmother, Margie Riggen. He is survived by his mother, Reva Owens of Adel; siblings, Tina (Joe) Gough, Jeffery Riggen, Lana (Mark Cadwell) Riggen and Christopher (Gwynne) Riggen; daughters, Cayanne (Kaleb Wessel) Keller and Marina (Jeremy Lund) Riggen; seven grandchildren, Zoe Lund, Ethan Lund, Makinzie Forkner, Garrison Forkner, Zayne Lund, Emerie Lund and Everleigh Wessel; nieces and nephews, Heather Gough, Jeremy (Ashley) Riggen, Zachary Wessels, Chaz Wessels, Joshua (Natalie) Gough, Samantha Riggen and Austen Riggen; and seven great nieces and nephews.
 A celebration of life will be held at the Raccoon Valley Community House, 1016 Main St., Adel, on April 19 from 5-8 p.m.

Luella J. Van Wey

Luella J. Van Wey, 89, died at home on March 29, 2024. A funeral service was Friday, April 5 at Iles Westover Chapel. Interment was at the East Friesland Cemetery, rural Ackley.
Luella was born on July 15, 1934, in Ackley. She married Leslie Van Wey June 8, 1954. They made their home in Waterloo. They hosted foreign exchange students from France and Blackhawk hockey players. Luella was a dental assistant, skilled seamstress, a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and a Girl Scout leader in Waterloo. She liked to travel, camp and play cards with her friends and family.
She worked at Sears in Waterloo in the men’s department for several years before retiring in 1996. In 2007, she moved to Johnston to be closer to her two granddaughters. She was very active. She enjoyed meeting new people, going to casinos and was involved with several women’s card groups in the Johnston area.
Luella is survived by her daughters, Lori (Deb) Van Wey and Leisha Lane; grandchildren, Jessie Kiesling Wegner (Chris Wegner), Lindsey (Tyler) Reagan and Natalie (Nick Riley) Lane; and great-grandsons, Lane and Rayden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, and her son-in-law, Paul Lane.

Joseph Gerald Chladek

Joseph Gerald Chladek, 85, of Johnston, died at his home on Friday, March 29, 2024. Joe was born in Omaha on June 26, 1938. He received his education at Creighton Preparatory School and later attended Creighton University and Northwestern University in Chicago where he received his certificate in Orthotics.
In 1963, he married Helen Liknes. They moved to the Des Moines area where he owned and operated Iowa Orthotics. In 1987, he sold the business but continued to work for a few more years until his retirement. Joe was an avid pool player and ran many pool tournaments in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Genelle Valentine, and a brother, James A. Chladek. He is survived by his longtime companion, Judy Pawell; sons, Noel and Jonas (Amber); stepson, James D. (Merlita) Barr; stepdaughter, Laurie (David) Cronin; and grandchildren, Noel Jr., Sinea, Brienna, Karrington, Breanna, Torin, Declan and Frederick; a son-in-law, Tom Valentine, and his ex-wife, Helen Roush; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering was held on Saturday, April 6 at the Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines.

Vicki Lynn (Trede) Ealy, 77, of Johnston died March 26, 2024, at Edencrest at Beaverdale in Des Moines. A memorial service was held Friday, March 29 at New Hope United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Vicki was born in Davenport on April 19, 1946. She married Philip Ealy on Jan. 19, 1982. Vicki’s greatest joys were her family, music, reading, gardening and crafting. Her strength was present in everything she faced, including several moves, beating colon cancer, remodeling an 1850s farmhouse, and through her battle with Alzheimer’s.
Vicki is survived by her husband, Phil; daughters Megan and Amanda; sisters Dona Hendrickson and Gayle Trede; several sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Sandy Jamison, and brother-in-law, Jack Hendrickson.

Daniel Paul Wees

Daniel Paul Wees, 81, of Johnston and formerly of Omaha, died March 25, 2024, at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral Mass was held April 1 at St. Pius X Catholic Church followed by interment at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale.
Daniel was born Jan. 16, 1943, in Omaha. He married Phyllis Wolski on Nov. 9, 1963. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2019. He enjoyed creating stained-glass pieces, fishing and woodworking, but most of all, he enjoyed time with his family.
He is survived by his two sons, Jeff Wees and Doug (Susan) Wees; two grandchildren, Eli and Noah Wees; one sister, Mary Ann Wees; and his companion, Shelly Svoboda. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother, Robert Wees.

Gary Bengt Seaholm

Gary Bengt Seaholm, 75, of Adel died following a courageous battle with cancer on March 23, 2024. Gary was born in Libertyville, Illinois, on Feb. 3, 1949.  He graduated from Grayslake High School and Central College in Pella, where he was a three-time all conference football player. While at Central, Gary met the love of his life, Sharon Lemon. They married June 30, 1973.
Gary taught for 35 years in several different school districts, with many years in the ADM school district. He retired while teaching at Ruby Van Meter. One of the biggest joys in Gary’s life was his grandchildren. He enjoyed cheering them on during their activities and events.
Left to carry on Gary’s sarcastic humor and love for the underdog are his children, Tim (Chrissy) Seaholm of Adel and Tammie (Tim) Smith of Adel; grandchildren, Nikole, Carter and Tyler Seaholm and and Landon, Natalie Sharon and Roosevelt Smith; his brother, Grant (Karen) Seaholm of Chicago and their children, Scott (Winonah), Nancy (Chris), Emily (Kyle), and Brett (Jimmy); two great nephews, Harrison and Remo; sister in-law, Chris (Steve) Cummings and their son, Matt; and his niece, Susan Peterson, and her family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Bengt and Ethel Mae; his sister, Carol Kratovil; and his wife, Sharon (Lemon) Seaholm. A memorial service was held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel on March 28. A private burial was held at Oakdale Cemetery.
