Thomas Larry Hingst

Thomas Larry Hingst, 75, of Des Moines died Nov. 11, 2021, from chronic illness at MercyOne Medical Center. He married Patricia, who survives him, on Feb. 14, 1976, in Burlington. He served in the Navy after high school, then worked in construction, warehouse and, eventually, for the post office until he retired after 25 years.
Services were held Nov. 17 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. A graveside service followed at at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

James “Jim” Calder

Jim Calder, 82, of Van Meter, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Methodist West Lakes Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 9 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. He graduated from Scranton High School in 1956. On Oct. 4, 1958, he married Joyce Finnegan, who survives him. Jim worked in the construction industry for many years, was the owner of Sam’s Downtown Tap for 10 years and finished his working career with VanPelt painting. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

James “Jim” Michael Stajcar

Jim Stajcar, 72, of Adel, died on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at UnityPoint Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nicki (Shinn) Stajcar. He graduated from Adel-De Soto High School. He worked for a lumber company in Johnston then, in 1977 joined Iowa Power (MidAmerica Energy), and worked in several jobs there, retiring after 30 years.
Jim was a hard worker and applied that hard work and dedication to all of the tasks he did at work, at home and helping others.

Holly Ann Van Buren

Holly Ann Van Buren, 65, of Adel, died Oct. 23, 2021, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She was raised in Cooperstown, New York. Holly had spent her life living in several states including Florida, Texas, and eventually residing in Iowa with her daughter Samantha (Patrick) Johns and grandchildren. Holly spent her career in early education.
A celebration of Holly’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at Big Al’s BBQ in Adel.

Joyce Marie Knight

Joyce (Lee) Knight, 73, died Oct. 21, 2021, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines. She grew up and attended school in Indiana. She met Gary Knight while attending the University of Evansville, and they married Dec 7, 1968. He survives. They were married for 52 years, raised four children, and enjoyed many adventures together. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Ernst Funeral Home, Waukee. Interment was at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Betty (Crowson) Naber

Betty (Crowson) Naber of Waukee died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at age 83. Betty Sue graduated from Black River Falls High School in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1956. She married Marvin Naber on April 14, 1962, and together they had five children. After 19 years of staying home raising her kids, Betty went to work for the Cedar Rapids Community School District as a confidential secretary until she retired. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 16, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial was at Booneville Cemetery.

Shirley Jean Grant Templet

Shirley Jean Grant Templet died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, in Waukee, five days before her 87th birthday. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in Detroit. At the age of 56, Shirley decided to get her college degree and attended Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia, graduating in 1992 with an associate in arts degree. She married Charles Alexander Templet in 1952. They had two children. She lived in Savannah for 50 years, where she worked as an office administrator for St. Joseph’s Hospital. She moved to Independence Village in Waukee in 2021. A small private family gathering was planned.

Juanita “Bernice” Nicholas

Juanita “Bernice” Nicholas, 95, died Sept. 29, 2021, while living at Edencrest at Green Meadows Assisted Living Community in Johnston, where she has lived since February 2019. Bernice was married to Norman Nicholas, who preceded her in death. They moved to Sandwich, Illinois, where Norman had a floor covering business in Aurora and Bernice was a material manager for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Survivors include sister-in-law, Margery Mahanna, several nieces, Patricia (Nicholas) Brooks, Dawn (Mahanna) Gomez and Margaret (Mahanna) Leone and two nephews, William Mahanna and James Mahanna. Private graveside services will be held at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Sandwich.

Gina McNair

Gina McNair, 62, of Van Meter, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at MercyOne, West Des Moines.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, 2021 at the De Soto Calvary Baptist Church with a funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. A private burial will take place in the Stump-Thornton-Barto Cemetery in rural Van Meter. Memorial contributions may be directed to the De Soto Calvary Baptist Church and/or the Van Meter American Legion Hall.
Gina attended Adel De Soto schools through 11th grade and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1977. She married Edward McNair on Nov. 24, 1978. Together, they built a successful company, McNair Geothermal, based out of Van Meter. He preceded her in death.

Tonya Anne (Moone) Walrod

Tonya Anne (Moon) Walrod, 59, of De Soto, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, with her family beside her. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. Family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, before the service at the funeral home. She went to school in Saginaw, Michigan. She had three daughters from a previous marriage and later married Michael (Wombat) Walrod, who survives her.

Vera Janet Pruitt, 90, of Redfield died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021. She was born in Missouri on March 18, 1931. She married Bobbie Dean Pruitt on July 14, 1949.

Timothy “Tim” Daugherty, 69, of Adel, died Oct. 3, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Larry Dean Barbieri

Larry Dean Barbieri, 61, of Des Moines passed away on Sept. 24, 2021. Larry was born in Waukee and graduated from Waukee High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guido and Norma Barbieri, and a brother, Guido. Larry is survived by his three sisters, Lucy Maxwell (Steve) of Hartford, Gloria Christy (Scott, deceased) of Johnston and Delores Barbieri of Waukee, and many nieces and nephews.

Larry Lee Linn, 84, of Adel, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at the Perry Lutheran Home.

He later moved on to become self-employed and sold tools for Merrill Company and Arnold Motor Supply. His wife preceded him in death.

Patricia Harsh

Patricia “Patty Banks” Harsh, 84, of Adel, died at Adel Acres under the care of Hospice of the Midwest on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Patty graduated from Winterset High School in 1955. She married Gerald “Skip” Harsh on Aug. 24, 1957. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI, graduating in 1957, and continued her education throughout her career. She taught for two years in Urbandale and 37 years in Adel in elementary education. She was involved in Adel Women’s Club, T.T.T. and the Adel First Christian Church. Shirley Beth Beasley

Shirley Beth Beasley, 98, of Adel, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - McCalley Chapel in Adel. A private family burial will take place at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
She graduated from Redfield High School in 1938 and enrolled in the American Institute of Business School in Des Moines. After leaving AIB, she lived at home and worked in the Redfield Library and the school library. When she and Cobb married, they rented a homestead, where they farmed with borrowed horses and machinery, before they moved to a farm where they could do crop share. Beth worked in the fields, maintained a garden and canned the produce, raised chickens to sell the eggs, helped with the livestock and raised three children in a home without electricity and running water. She lived on that farm for nearly 75 years.
During retirement, she enjoyed ceramics, adult school classes, reading and her volunteer work. She served on the Citizens’ Review Committee of the Dallas County Care Facility for many years.

Marion Polzin

Marion Polzin, 85, of Waukee, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021. Funeral services were Sept. 23 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - McCalley Chapel in Adel. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in rural Van Meter.

Sally Ann (Facto) Hanes

Sally Ann (Facto) Hanes, 63, of Waukee died at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center Sept. 13, 2021. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1975. On Oct. 11, 1975, she married Dennis Dean Hanes, who proceeded her in death. After briefly moving to Colorado, they settled in Waukee, where they raised their three children. Sally was a homemaker, worked at Baker’s Cafeteria, owned Hanes Foodservice that served Plymouth Place in Des Moines, fed children at Apple Tree Children’s Center, and worked at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as a loan underwriter, retiring from there due to her long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Sally was part of the Black Cat Club at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Phyllis A. Hagemeier

Phyllis A. Hagemeier, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021. Services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. A celebration of life reception luncheon at the Ida Grove Country Club followed interment. Arrangements were with Ernst Funeral Home in Waukee, www.ErnstFuneralHome.com.
She taught country school while attending Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. She then transferred to the University of Nebraska Lincoln, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught second grade at Garfield Avenue School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Phyllis married Richard Hagemeier July 3, 1960. The couple moved to Ft. Louis, Washington, where Richard was stationed and Phyllis taught school on the base. Following Richard’s honorable discharge from the Army, they moved to Ida Grove in 1963 where they raised their three children. She was involved in community and church activities, including Pleasant Valley Bike Trail, Community Housing Board, Horn Hospital Auxiliary, the Library Board, Ida Grove Centennial and RAGBRAI committees, the local Republican party, church bell choir, church circle, and remodel committee for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s 125th Anniversary & Rededication.

Ghanie Azouz Kadid, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021, surrounded by her family at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center. She was born in Aleppo, Syria. She married Taofik Kadid, and they had three children there. Late in her life, Ghanie moved to the United States to reside with her daughter, Nadia Kadid, in Waukee.

David Bahr

David Bahr, 53, of Johnston died Aug. 30, 2021, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A visitation was held Sept. 3 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. He married his wife, Kara, in Oskaloosa in July 1996. They have a daughter, Kiersten, who was born in Des Moines, on Feb. 8, 2001. He has worked as a Senior Pre-Construction Manager for The Weitz Company since January of 2002.

Donald Opperthauser

Donald Opperthauser, 80, of Grimes, died Aug. 24, 2021, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life service was held Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Grimes. Burial followed the service at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
He was born March 2, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, was a 1959 graduate of Cass Technical High School in Detroit and was a graduate from Baptist Bible College in 1963. Michael Lee “Mike” Holmes

Michael Lee “Mike” Holmes, 70, died at home with his wife, Shari, at his side on Aug. 19, 2021, of esophageal cancer. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1970 where he was vice-president of his senior class. He served in the United States Army as a Pershing Missile crewman while serving in Germany. After returning home, his career was as a master mechanic. In later years he worked for AAA.

Calvin A. Tyer

Calvin A. Tyer, 96, of Polk City, originally of Winterset, died at home Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1942 and served in the Marine Corps. After the war, he returned to Winterset and worked in underground construction. He was married to Audrey Juanita Miller for 66 years. She preceded him in death. He is survived locally by son James Ray Tyer of Polk City.
A Celebration of Life was held Monday, Aug. 23, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with burial in the North McDonald Cemetery, northeast of Winterset.

J. William “Bill” Mitchell

She graduated from Van Meter Consolidated Schools in 1947. In 1948, she married Eddie Dawson. He preceded her in death. They had three children, Dennis, Denise, Debra and Deanna. She worked as an office assistant for a tax preparer. She sang at the homecoming for her cousin, Bob Feller, at the Iowa State Fair Grandstand, for KRNT Radio and at Hoyt Sherman Auditorium. Kirk Greenslade, 50, of Grimes (formerly of Adel) died at his home on Aug. 1, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Hayley Greenslade; children, Kolby (Megan) Greenslade, Luke Greenslade, Raquel Greenslade, and Maleah Greenslade; step-children, Sydney, Karsten and Jacob; grandchildren, Kipton and Korver; brothers, Bret Greenslade, Nick Greenslade, and Justin Greenslade; sisters, Lindsay Koons, Danyelle Walls, and Kimberly Wyckoff; father, Steve (Marcia) Greenslade; mother, Debbie Nixon; and grandmother, Bettie Nixon.
Kirk attended Adel-De Soto High School in 1989 and excelled in wrestling and football. After high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corp. Following his service in the Marines, he joined the United States Army Reserves as a recruiter. He owned and operated many different businesses, his most recent being Iron Men Construction.

Douglas Lee Brown, 75, formerly of Dexter, died at his home on Thursday, July 29, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
He graduated from Dexter High School. He worked as a supervisor for Parker Brothers Games and then as a courier for FedEx for 28 years. He married Ruth James on April 5, 1985, in Redfield.

Albert Wesley “Wes” Watson, 82, longtime resident of Dexter, died June 25, 2021, at the Community Care Center in Stuart. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, at Caldwell Parrish McCalley Chapel in Adel. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests everyone to dress in casual clothes.
Wes graduated from Adel High School in 1956. He worked for the Meredith Publishing Company and retired from there after 43 years of service. He volunteered for Boy Scouts and was a firefighter for the Dexter fire department for several years. He was the Dexfield Bossler Club Fan of the Year in 1993 and, in 1996, was recognized for his outstanding support of West Central student activities. He is survived by wife Helen, son David and other relatives and friends.

Carroll Morrison

Carroll Morrison, 89, of Minburn, died June 24, 2021, at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Funeral services were Thursday, July 1 at Brandt Funeral Home, Dallas Center, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, drove truck for Briggs Transportation for 30 years, and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local #147.

Raymond G. Mikulan

Raymond Gerald Mikulan, 87, of Polk City died June 26, 2021. Visitation was held June 29 at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger with Mass of Christian Burial held June 30 at Assumption Catholic Church. He had a professional hockey career as a goalie in the IHL and AHL. Later, he managed the Des Moines Ice Arena and owned and operated Ray’s Restaurant and the Carousel Lounge in Des Moines.
Ray met Sharon Leopold at the Carousel, and, in 1976 they became owners/operators of Mary’s Cafe in Polk City and renamed it the Landmark Restaurant. They enjoyed 33 happy years at the Landmark, retiring in 2009. His wife of 44 years, Sharon, survives him, along with other relatives and friends. Evelyn Laura Linkvis Dowell, 92, of Waukee died at her home on June 22, 2021. She worked for Brenton Bank for 30 years while raising a family. She was married to Donald Dean Dowell for 66 years before his death in 2014. She was a member of the Neighborhood Club, Garden Club and Tuesday Club. She was in leadership roles at Waukee Christian Church, such as Sunday School teacher, treasurer and CWF. Further, she was actively involved in volunteering in various local booster clubs.
Visitation was June 29 at Waukee Christian Church in Waukee. Funeral services were June 30 at Waukee Christian Church. Burial followed at Waukee Cemetery. Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center was in charge of arrangements.

John Frederick Moller, Sr., 75, of Johnston died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 20, 2021, as he celebrated a special Father’s Day surrounded by his family. He had 50-plus years of service in the funeral industry. Following in his grandfather Lee Hamilton’s footsteps, as well as his father’s footsteps, he became a third-generation co-owner of Hamilton’s Funeral Homes along with his brother, Bill Moller.

Berneice H. Friesz, 100, of Dallas Center, died Saturday, June 26, 2021, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. During wartime, Berneice worked at an ordinance plant packing 50 caliber machine gun bullets into cartons. After that, she worked at Hiland Potato Chips; however, she spent most of her working years at Meredith in Des Moines in hand bindery. She retired from Meredith after 32 years and eight months of service.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 29 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. Arrangements were handled by McLarens Resthaven Chapel & Mortuary.

Nancy Suzanne Wilson

Nancy Suzanne (Walrod) Wilson, 72, of Dallas Center, died Thursday, June 17, 2021, at MercyOne Johnston Hospice Care after an 18-month battle with cancer. Nancy is survived by her husband, Gary, of 50 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 30, from 5-7 p.m. at the church. Guests are invited to wear their Cyclone and Hawkeye gear to the visitation in remembrance of Nancy. Arrangements are handled by Brandt Funeral Homes - Dallas Center.
