Joanne Nichols

Joanne Nichols, 86, of Winterset, died Monday, April 4, 2022, at her home. Visitation was April 10 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was April 11 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. Burial will take place in the Winterset Cemetery.
Joanne was born in Monroe County. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1954 and married George Nichols on March 27, 1954, in Melrose. Over the years, she worked as a district Avon manager. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. She enjoyed being active in the church along with being a part of the Altar and Rosary Society. Joanne was active in her community, being involved in the John Wayne Museum and giving bus tours for the Madison County Chamber. She was a member of multiple bridge clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George. She is survived by her children, Ed (Mary) Nichols, Steve (Leslie) Nichols, Tim (Sheryl) Nichols, and Vicki (Russ) Roberts; and many other relatives.

Dr. Joseph William Johll

Dr. Joseph William Johll, 64, died peacefully in his home on April 5, 2022. He was born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Determined from the beginning, he paid for his first car and saved for college by working at the Country Kitchen in high school. In 1979 he completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Viterbo College, LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force. He married his college sweetheart, Gail Ann Reicks, on June 18, 1983. While working nightshift as a critical care nurse in the emergency room, he began optometry school in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1990. His devotion to his family, work as an optometrist, and his Catholic faith included moves to Ankeny, Chariton, Fairfield and Winterset in 2006. He was a member of the American Optometric Association, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Opus Dei and Regnum Christi, to name a few.
He had a16-year-long journey with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy – Parkinsonism (PSP).
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail; children: Mark (Tamara) Johll, Maria (Keith) Kelley, Ben, Rebecca (David) and grandson Joseph Reising, Matthew, Miriam, and Annie; and other relatives.

David Winders

David Marshall Winders, 76, died April 3, 2022. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ankeny Funeral Home on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
He was born in Des Moines and graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1963. After graduation, David served four years in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. David retired from John Deere Des Moines Works in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy Winders; four daughters, Shelley (Mark) Koons, Jennifer (Angelo) Martinez, Christine (Keith) Lydon and Nicole (Lou) Schwalbach; and other relatives.

Tony S. Whitaker

Anthony “Tony” Steven Whitaker, 45, died April 2, 2022. A funeral service was held Friday, April 8 at Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny with burial following at Berwick Cemetery. He was born in Des Moines, raised in Ankeny and graduated from Ankeny High School in 1996. He earned a business degree from the University of Iowa in 2001.
Tony was part of a 4x4 relay team that held a record at the Drake Relays for 25 years. He was vice president at Municipal Supply where he worked for 21 years. He had the pleasure of working side by side with his grandfather, dad and brother.

Danial ‘Dan’ Lee Greenlee

Danial “Dan” Lee Greenlee, 54, died April 7, 2022, at his residence in Ankeny. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ankeny Funeral Home on Thursday, April 14 from 4-7 p.m. He was born in Des Moines and attended Moore Elementary School there before moving to Elkhart where he completed grade school. Dan eventually ended up in Ankeny, attending Ankeny High School and graduating in 1986.
Dan is survived by his parents; children, Samantha (Jason) Orndorff, Shawn (Heather) Greenlee, and Tylor Greenlee; sibling, Tesa Greenlee; grandchild, Mikayla Rose; widow, Beth Greenlee; and many extended family and friends.

Eileen D. Gust (Bogner)

Eileen D. Gust (Bogner), 90, died April 9, 2022. She was born in Crofton, Nebraska. She married Harvey Gust on May 28, 1950, and they moved around the country until settling in Iowa in 1961. Eileen raised two children, Patricia (James) French and Steven (Laurie) Gust. She and Harvey built a cabin at Lake Rathbun, where they enjoyed many outdoor activities. When Harvey developed Parkinson’s disease, she was his caregiver. She spent the last two years at Edencrest Assisted Living in Ankeny.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, and all her siblings. No service will be held. Her ashes will be taken to Crofton by the family at a later date. Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Urbandale, is assisting the family.

Southida ‘Pinky’ Simahano

Southida “Pinky” Simahano, 39, died Tueday, April 5, 2022, at her home in Ankeny. She was born in Des Moines. Pinky worked for the State of Iowa and had a part-time job at a local grocery store. She would find the good in people and try to help as much as she could no matter how tired she was. She was selfless, always trying to help others by bringing them lunch, running their errands, covering shifts and sometimes just lending an ear.
She is survived by her mother, Chanty; brother, Phoutasone; and other loving relatives and many special friends.
A Celebration of Life was held April 8 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.

Paulette Arlene (Derrick) Gretter

Paulette Arlene (Detrick) Gretter, 73, died on March 29, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice Care in Johnston. A private family Celebration of Life will be held June 5, 2022, in Des Moines. She was born in Marshalltown and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Lenihan Catholic High School in Marshalltown. Paulette made a home in Keota, where she raised two sons, John and James. She sought out opportunities for community service, including serving on the Keota School Board. She attended Kirkwood Community College, graduating with an associate’s degree in accounting, and spent many years working seasonally as a tax preparer. She lived in Iowa City and Osage Beach, Missouri, before moving to Ankeny in 2020.
Paulette is survived by her children, John Gretter (Sarah) and James Gretter (Tracy), and many other relatives.

Shirley Dunston

Shirley Dunston, 91, of Ankeny, died Wednesday, April 6, 2022. A funeral was held Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Memorial Services of Iowa. Burial followed at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
She graduated from Chariton High in 1948, focusing on typing and shorthand. She married the late Raleigh Milton Dunston in 1949, and they lived together in Des Moines for 62 years. He preceded her in death in 2011. Shirley is survived by her children, Raleigh (Pam) Dunston, Angela Johnson, Cynthia Barber and Tracy (Tom) Willis; like a son, Rich (Angie) Pettinger; and many other relatives.
Shirley worked in several industries prior to her career as an executive administrative assistant, retiring from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1989. Shirley was an active member of Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, VFW Post 738 Auxiliary and The Optimist Club of Ankeny.

Julie Ann Pieper

Julie Ann Pieper, 60, of Ankeny, died Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. She was born in East Moline, Illinois. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, then went on to graduate from DMACC in Ankeny with an associate’s degree in business. She married Scott B. Pieper on Sept. 27, 2013. He survives her, along with other relatives and friends. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Patricia Sue Gugger

Patricia Sue Gugger, 84, Ankeny, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022. A funeral service was held Monday, April 11 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at Vernon Cemetery, Renwick, at a later date.
Pat was born in Mason City. A 1956 graduate of Northwood High School, Pat earned both her two-year undergrad degree (1958) and her bachelor’s degree (1974) from the University of Northern Iowa and devoted 34 years to teaching pre-K, kindergarten and first grade at Boone Valley (Vernon and Renwick) and Taft Elementary (Humboldt).
She was a 50-year member of the Chapter ES P.E.O., Northwood, and a 50-year member of the Renwick United Methodist Church, serving on committees and holding offices: chairman of trustees, chairman of Administrative Council, chairman of Finance Committee, and long-term secretary of United Methodist Women. She was a 4-H leader and Cub Scout den mother. Upon moving to Ankeny, she was secretary for her homeowner’s association.
She was preceded in death by Rich, her husband of 57 years, and her son, Tracy Gugger. She is survived by her daughter, Tricia (Pat) Childress, and many other relatives and friends.

Mildred L. Webb

Visitation for Mildred Lucille Webb, 91, was held April 5, 2022, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home. She died on April 1. She was born in Bondurant and attended Bondurant School where she graduated in 1949. During her high school years, she dated Robert Webb before his graduation in 1948. After graduation, Robert entered the U.S. Air Force in September 1948. On leave, the couple started a cross-country trek back to New York where Robert was serving at Samson AFB and married on Oct. 26, 1949, in Paducah, Kentucky.
The couple had four children, Pamela, Robert, James and Michael. Due to Robert’s career in managing coop elevators, they moved to Everly in 1968 and remained there until all the children were graduated. In the years to follow, they moved frequently.
She is survived by her children, Pamela (Irvin) Johnson, Robert (Vicki) Webb, James Webb and Michael Webb, and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Lee Webb, in 2006.

Maurice ‘Morry’ Weston Hansen

Maurice “Morry” Weston Hansen, 86, died Monday, April 4, 2022. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22 at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Roland Cemetery in Roland.
He was born in Kearney, Nebraska. His parents were teachers, and, due to the difficult wartime circumstances, his parents taught at many schools, resulting in Morry attending 13 different schools as a child until graduating from North High School in 1954. He attended Drake University, where his father was an associate professor, and followed in his parents’ educational footsteps. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1958 and a master’s degree in education in guidance and counseling in 1965, after which he worked for 37 years in education, with 35 spent as a guidance counselor for the Des Moines Schools. He finished his career and retired from Lincoln High School in 2001.
He served in the Army and Air National Guards from 1959-1964, during which time he also worked for the YMCA in Des Moines where he met his wife, Sandra “Sandy” Eggland. They were married in 1962 and shared 60 years together.
Between 1980-1986, Morry served as head coach for the Johnston High School girls’ volleyball team, where he initiated the program.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughters Janelle (Rick) Hansen-Strand and Kristi (Dave) Hansen Walvoord; grandchildren Jack Walvoord and Dawson Walvoord; and other relatives.
Arrangements were by Iles Westover Chapel.

Lauri Ann (Merkle) Nelson

Lauri Ann (Merkle) Nelson, 65, of Altoona died Sunday, April 3, 2022. She was born in Maryville, Missouri, and, during her childhood, lived in Allerton and Lorimor before her family moved to Altoona. She married Randy Nelson on April 23, 1976. They had two children, Cara Ann, now deceased, and Cody Alan. They resided in Altoona throughout their 45 years of marriage.
Lauri was a Polk County Master Gardener. She worked in banking for several years. When she heard that Local Carpenters Union 106 was going to hire women, she became a journeyman. She helped build the Des Moines downtown skywalks, the McDonald’s Restaurant at Mercy Hospital, a church, and many other commercial projects in the area.
One of Lauri’s proudest achievements was that, after being troubled with alcohol addiction during her earlier years, she was able to achieve permanent sobriety. She then sponsored others who came into the AA program and were also able to attain sobriety with her support and counsel.
She is survived by her husband, Randy Nelson; son Cody (Lacey) Nelson; parents Bob and Beverly Merkle; and many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life service is being held Tuesday, April 12 at 11 a.m., at the Rising Sun Church of Christ. To join the service via live stream, visit www.risingsunchurch.org. Linda Hashman

Linda Hashman, 78, of Altoona died March 30, 2022. She was born in Iola, Wisconsin. The family moved to Des Moines when Linda was 9. She graduated from Saydel High School in 1961 and married Don Wheatley in 1962. Their oldest son, Steven Paul, was born in Stuttgart, Germany, where Don was serving in the Army. Their second son, Scott Alan, was born in Des Moines. Linda’s marriage to Don Wheatley ended in 1976. Linda continued to live in Des Moines until after her marriage to James Waid Hashman in 1982. They moved to Wasilla, Alaska, in 1984 and remained there until 2005 when they moved to Lander, Wyoming.
Linda worked at Dahl’s Pharmacy in Des Moines for 11 years and retired from National Bank of Alaska in Wasilla after 16 years.
She is survived by son Steven Paul Wheatley (Sheri); step-children Steven Clay Hashman (Lisa), Jamie Lynn Lindell (Dennis) and Jeffrey Waid Hashman (Sonja); and many other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.

Robert ‘Bob’ Peterson

Robert Harry Peterson, 67, died April 4, 2022. Bob is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kathy; children, Nathan, Kelly and Laura Peterson; and other relatives. Funeral services were held April 8 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home.

Betty P. (Lindberg) Stearns

Betty P. (Lindberg) Stearns, 93, died April 3, 2022. She and her husband, Elmer, raised three children, Jeff (Judy), Jim (Kay) and Nancy (Mike) Mars, and had four grandchildren, Andy (Robyn) Stearns, Kyle Stearns, Ben (Jessica) Stearns, Chris (Zoe) Mars, and five great-grandchildren.
Betty raised her family in Des Moines then she and Elmer bought a farm in Adel in 1978 and lived there until his death in 2011. She then went to live at Legacy Pointe, now called Independence Village of Waukee. The family is planning a service at a later date.

James R. ‘Dick’ Barry

James R. “Dick” Barry, 80, of Adel died April 2, 2022. A visitation was be held Thursday, April 7, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. Margaret Jean Morrissey

Margaret Jean Morrissey, 91, of Urbandale, died on March 31, 2022, at Perry Lutheran Home under the care of St. Croix Hospice. She attended rural schools and graduated from Lovilia High School in 1948. She moved to Des Moines and worked for Farmers Insurance Group for 38 years.
She is survived by sisters Mary (Jim) Roan and Geri Clark, and sisters-in-law Ann Morrissey and Alverta Morrissey; and other relatives. A funeral mass was held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3663 66th St., Urbandale.

Daniel Joseph Wilharber

Daniel Joseph Wilharber, 67, died March 31, 2022, after a brief illness. Private interment will be held at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, and a celebration of his life will be planned for a later date in Davenport, where he grew up. He graduated from Davenport Assumption High School in 1973. On Aug. 3, 1974, he married Lynn Stanage in Davenport. They had three sons, Randy, Brad and Brian. They lived in Davenport until 1986 before moving to Ottumwa, where they raised their boys and lived until 2015. Upon his retirement, Dan and Lynn relocated to Urbandale.
Dan was a longtime employee of UPS. Upon his retirement from UPS, he worked for Wacker Chemical in Eddyville until his second retirement in 2014. Dan was a member of the Elks and the Knight of Columbus. He was a coach in the Ottumwa Youth Football League and served on the board of the Ottumwa Youth Basketball League. He was also a coach with the Ottumwa Babe Ruth Baseball League. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and served on the board of SE IA I-Club for many years.

Donna Johnson

Donna R. Johnson, 75, died on March 28, 2022, in Des Moines. She spent her childhood in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1964. Donna worked as a dental assistant for a number of years where she was introduced to her husband, Jeff Johnson. They were married on Dec. 30, 1967. After Jeff graduated from veterinary school, he served in the U.S. Air Force, first stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. After being promoted to captain, Jeff and Donna transferred to Aviano Air Force Base in Italy. Upon returning to Des Moines, they established All City Mobile Pet Clinic, a full-service mobile practice from 1977-84. In 1980, they purchased City South Animal Hospital on Army Post Road in Des Moines where Donna spent 32 years as the bookkeeper and office manager, mostly in charge of Jeff. Over the years, Donna filled the part of secret Santa, providing presents to numerous needy families.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dr. Jeffry Johnson. She is survived by daughters Stacy Taiber (Dan) and Shanna Overholser (Matt); and other relatives.
Visitation will be held April 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. A funeral mass will be held April 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, followed by a luncheon at St. Francis Parish Hall. Private family entombment will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.

Sheryl Glassell

Sheryl Dee Glassell, 64, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at home. A celebration of life will be on April 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at Irish Settlement, Cumming. She graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1975 and from Allen College in 2011 with a master’s degree in nursing/nurse practitioner. She worked in Mankato, Minnesota, specializing in nephrology.
In Mankato, she was involved with Catholic Charities Diocese of Winona, National Kidney Foundation and Wounded Warriors, and with the National Kidney Foundation and Wounded Warriors in Des Moines.
She is survived by her siblings, Richard (Laura) Glassell, Randall (Pat) Glassell, Denise Tomlinson, James (Krystel) Glassell and John (Kathleen) Glassell; nine nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.

Kathy Kay Stockham

Kathy Kay Stockham, 70, died Friday, March 25, 2022, at her home in Norwalk. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines Tech High School in 1969, Broadlawn’s Nursing School in 1972, and the University of Iowa in 1974. Kathy was a member of the American Nurses Association. She worked as hazmat coordinator for Lutheran Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Stockham; children, James Stockham and Erica Stockham; granddaughter, Angela Cabrera; and other relatives.
No public services are planned. Kathy will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Glendale Cemetery.

Richard J. and Sharon Kay Berkenbosch

Memorial services for Richard J. and Sharon Kay Berkenbosch of Norwalk were held Saturday, April 2, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
Richard was born Jan. 11,1942 and died April 12, 2019. Sharon was born Dec. 13, 1945 and died March 19, 2022. They were married March 28, 1964. Richard’s first job was delivering papers for The Des Moines Register, and he worked as bagger before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He then worked for and retired from Firestone. Next he climbed into a truck with Sharon to drive (as a team) for Schneider National. The last job he did before joining Sharon in retirement was working for Capital City Fruits.
Sharon (Sherri), was born in Indianola. She loved doing a variety of the jobs and activities. Some of her unique adventures included being one of the first women to drive a stock car in Iowa. She even won a season championship at Stuart Speedway.
They are survived by daughters Deb Berkenbosch and Rebecca Berkenbosch and other relatives and friends.

Martine Dolores Waters

Martine Dolores Waters, 40, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 25, 2022, at her home in Indianola. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School in 2000. She worked for Nationwide for more than 13 years.
She is survived by her parents, Mike and Synda; siblings, Michelle (Mike), Michael Jr., Marshane (Dustin), and Autumn; her niece and nephew, Maddie and Drake; her beloved dogs, Beezee and Blitzy; and countless friends and many loving extended family.

Estelita ‘Lita’ Kintanar

Estelita “Lita” Kintanar, 74, died March 28, 2022, of leukemia. She was born in Burgos La Union, Philippines and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in administration from Philippines School in Business Administration in 1972.
She is survived by her husband, Rogelio “Roger” Kintanar, of 49 years; their children, Michael (Fresel), Michelle (Julio), Cecille and Rogelio “Arjay” Jr. (Marissa); and numerous grandchildren.
A private Mass of Christian Burial was held. Iles Dunn’s Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Laurence James ‘Jim’ McMichael

Laurence James “Jim” McMichael, 94, died on March 29, 2022, at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. Jim attended All Saints School, Dowling High School (class of 1945), and Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jim met Janet Greer at The Bankers Life, where they both worked. They were married in 1957. They have five children: John, Margaret, Patti, Mary and Tom. His wife and children survive him.
Jim was a devout Catholic, and he and Janet were long-time members of St. Theresa Parish. Jim worked his entire career at The Bankers Life/The Principal, retiring in 1991 after 37 years. Jim held numerous volunteer positions over the years. He taught adult reading at Drake University; conducted Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) sessions throughout the state, for which he was recognized with the Iowa Volunteer of the Year Award; and served as a greeter at Mercy West Hospital in West Des Moines.
The funeral service was held at St. Theresa Church on Wednesday, April 6.

Mary Ann Hilderbrand

Mary Ann Hilderbrand, 98, of West Des Moines, died on March 27, 2022, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, of which she was a member. Burial followed at Resthaven Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born in Marshalltown, where she met her husband, Richard, of 52-plus years. She worked for the West Des Moines Public Schools serving lunch to the children.
Surviving are her children, Linda Cookman (Joe), Julie Oeltjenbruns (Keith), Jim (Vicky), and Tom (Sam); 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 1997; sons Danny and Rick; and great-grandson, Poppy.
McLaren’s Funeral Chapel in West Des Moines was in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Ann Olsen

Georgia Ann Olsen, 94, of West Des Moines died March 28, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1995. Survivors include her children, Terry (Kitty), Dan (Kathy) and Polly Olsen; son-in-law Tim Singer; and many other relatives. A full obituary is available at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Muriel I. Hawkins

Muriel I. Hawkins, 99, died Thursday, March 24, 2022. She was able to live in her own home until her final couple of days. A private service and burial were held Friday, April 1. She grew up at a state fish hatchery and animal reserve in St. Paul, Minnesota. She attended Mills Art College after high school and then began working as a commercial artist at the local newspaper. In June of 1948, she married O.D. Hawkins. After they married, Muriel worked as an artist at the University of Missouri. They lived in Schenectady, New York, then briefly at Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1956, they settled in West Des Moines and Muriel worked as a homemaker.
She was a member of Associated Artists of Central Iowa for many years and active in showing her artwork in the community. After painting a picture of Terrace Hill, she was commissioned by the purchaser to do a painting of Hoyt Sherman Place as well. She enjoyed writing and was published in a couple of Minnesota magazines where she wrote stories relating to her youth at the fish hatchery. In at least one article, she also provided an illustration. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution for 40 years and a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for more than 60 years.

Christopher Nolan Landers

Christopher Nolan Landers, 21, died March 25, 2022. His greatest joy was Royal Family Kids Camp, which he attended for four years as a youth and returned as a young adult as a mentor and counselor. He was a 2020 graduate of Valley High School.

Patricia JoAnn Jones-Taylor

Patricia JoAnn Jones-Taylor, 57, died peacefully on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Trish was born in Des Moines and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School. She earned her nursing degree at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. She was a nurse for her entire career. She married Steve Taylor on June 22, 2019, in Bondurant.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Taylor; sons, Joshua (Ashly) Moland and Jordan Moland; her step-children, Greg (Aimee), Jessica M., Lindsay (Cory), Tabatha, Thadius, Jessica D., and Jacquelyn; and other relatives and friends.

Connie Kinser

Constance Joan Gustafson was born in College Springs on Jan. 1, 1938. She was raised in Red Oak and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1956. She married Neil Bentley in 1957. They had four kids including one from Neil’s previous marriage. They lived in Kingsley for a time and then farmed in Mills County. They divorced in 1968.
Connie met Jimmy Kinser, a barber in Red Oak, and they married in 1974 in Maryville, Missouri. They lived in Red Oak for several years, then in Indianola briefly before relocating to Winterset in 1988. They had one daughter together, plus a daughter from Jim’s previous marriage.
Connie was the first newspaper delivery girl in Red Oak, working for her father who was a paper boss for the Council Bluffs Nonpareil and then The Des Moines Register. She had many jobs over her working life including bank teller, waitress, hospital receptionist, many secretarial positions, the Iowa DOT in the driver’s license department and as a child care provider. In about 1978, Connie started to work for the USDA in the Farm Services Agency (formerly the ASCS). She worked in Montgomery County for about 10 years then entered the CED training program. She served as County Extension director in Warren and then Madison counties until she retired in 2003. She was one of few women who served as a CED.
She was a member of the Jaycee Jaynes of Red Oak, Classy Chassis Car Club of Red Oak, Winterset Rotary, and the Winterset School Board, having served as president. She sang in church choirs most of her life and enjoyed playing the piano.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Kinser; son Joel Kinser (Jen Hughes); step-son Tom Bentley; daughters, Darce (Jeff) Ovel and Molly (Chris) Douglas; step-daughter Klissie Robbins; daughter-in-law Julie (Chris) Hendrix; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Bill Kinser.

Molly Kathryn (Hebert) Shukla

Molly Kathryn (Hebert) Shukla, 29, died Monday, March 28, 2022, at home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday April 4, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny. Inurnment followed at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Molly was born March 26, 1993, in Des Moines to David and Mary (O’Hara) Hebert. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 2011, received her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa, and received a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York. She graduated in one year with a 4.0 from the Ivy League School. She married Ravi Shukla in on Feb. 17, 2018, and later held a Catholic wedding celebrated on Aug. 11, 2018. They resided in Playa Vista, California. Molly worked as a licensed masters social worker for Ankeny Family Counseling.
Molly is survived by her husband, Ravi Shukla; parents, Mary and Dave Hebert; brother, Grant (Tia) Hebert, all of Ankeny; and many other relatives and friends.

Dena Mae Logli Randolph

Dena Mae Logli Randolph, 103, died Thursday, March 31, 2022. She graduated from Ankeny High School. She married William J. Randolph, also from Ankeny, where they lived until Bill’s death in March of 2000.
She is survived by her children, William E. Randolph and Linda Randolph; and other relatives and friends. Following a gathering of family and friends at the Ankeny Funeral Home, Dena will be buried beside her husband, Bill, on Wednesday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines. Anyone who considered Dena a friend is invited to attend the graveside.

Barbara Dee Harris

Barbara Dee Harris was born March 12, 1935, in Coral Gables, Florida. A memorial service was held on Friday, April 1 at Memorial Services of Iowa. Barb graduated high school at Clarkston High School, Clarkston, Michigan, in 1952. She married James McNamee in 1956 and worked at the registrar’s office at the University of Iowa, where Jim graduated from the University of Iowa Dental School in 1963. They settled and raised their three children in Ankeny, where she spent the next 57 years.
Barb worked at Jim’s dental office. She and Jim were involved in Friendship Force International, and they were honored to host other members from around the world. As Friendship Force members, they also visited 24 countries including Australia, Japan and Norway.
Barb and Jim were longtime members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. She enjoyed Women’s Club and Women’s Lit Club with her many friends.
She is survived by her children, Denise (Ken) Hummel, Pam (Mike) Morrison, and Jamie (Denise) McNamee; and grandchildren, Andrew (Marissa) Hummel, Jana (Jake) Sellhausen, Ashley (Blake) LaFollette, Lauren Morrison, Mackenzie (Blake) Davidson, and Josh McNamee.

Robert ‘Jake’ Lee Van Horn

Jake Van Horn, 91, died March 28, 2022. Jake was born in Runnells and graduated from Woodside High School. He retired from Firestone after 33 years and continued his passion for golf by playing and working at various golf courses. He played softball for many teams in the area.
Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean. Jake is survived by his children, Laura Van Horn and Rick Robertson Van Horn (Debbie); stepson Jeff (Susan) Schwartz; and many other relatives and friends.

Minnie ‘Mickey’ B. Spivey

Minnie “Mickey” B. Spivey, 69, of Ankeny, died at her home, surrounded by family on March 26, 2022. Her funeral was March 30 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ankeny. The burial of cremated remains will be at a later date.
She was born in Hartsville, South Carolina. Mickey was involved in many church activities and bible studies. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) member. In 1970, she received the John Philip Sousa Band Award, recognizing her superior musicianship in saxophone. She attended Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina, and Iowa Methodist School of Technology in Des Moines. She earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology with a 4.0 GPA in the summer of 1994. She worked at Iowa Methodist Medical Center as a medical technologist in the Blood Bank Lab, where she retired in 2016.

Gary Alan Waller

Gary Alan Waller died surrounded by his family on March 30, 2022. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2022, with visitation at 3:30 p.m., at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home, 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.
Gary was born Jan. 22, 1948, in Iowa City. The family moved to Ankeny in 1964, and Gary graduated from Ankeny High School in 1966. Soon after, Gary joined the U.S. Army where he served, stateside, during the Vietnam War. After his service, he met Barbara Louise Sidoner, and they were married on Nov. 20, 1971. He worked for decades in sales and was a long-time volunteer with the Ankeny High School Alumni Association, as well as a member of a Corvette club.
Gary is survived by his sons, Mike (Liz) and Steve; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb.

Shannon L. Lamberti

Shannon Lee (Cahill) Lamberti, 58, died at her home in Ankeny on March 26, 2022. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 2 at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home followed by an interment at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Shannon was born in Omaha, Nebraska. She moved to Ankeny with her parents and siblings. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 1981 and received an associate’s degree from DMACC in 1983. She worked as a legal assistant until staying home to raise her two children.

Evelyn Mae Shafer

Evelyn Mae Shafer, 97, of Grimes, died Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. Services were held Sunday, April 3 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes. Burial followed at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
Evelyn was born in Dallas County and married Jack Shafer on July 3, 1943. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Dallas Center Woman’s Club for 30-plus years, Iowa Cattle Women, William Wagner Questers, and was a Living History Farms volunteer. After her husband’s passing, she enjoyed dancing at Lake Robbins Ballroom.

Finnegan James Hurley

Finnegan James Hurley was born on Friday, March 25, 2022, and died Monday, March 28. Finn will lovingly be remembered by his parents, Lacey and Ben Hurley; his big sisters, Graysan and Eversyn; and many other relatives.

Richard Wayne Semler

Richard Wayne Semler, 91, died March 22, 2022. He was married to Jean Mary Bowers on Aug. 17, 1951. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in McAllen, Texas, Independence and Cedar Falls. He was in the Army Reserves, a member of the Rotary Club in Independence and became a Paul Harris Fellow.
Richard attended Northwestern College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a year then Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. After graduation, he taught English and social studies in Dunkerton, Tripoli and Waterloo for about 10 years. Most of that time they lived in Cedar Falls. He then worked as a consultant for Area Education Agency 7 for 20 years before he retired in 1994. They lived in Independence for those 20 years. He received a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa during that time.
Shortly after retirement, Richard and Jean moved to McAllen, where they lived for 22 years. In 2018 they moved back to Iowa to Woodlands Creek Independent Living and then Silvercrest Assisted Living. He was living at Glen Oak’s Alzheimer’s Special Care Center at the time of his death.
Richard is survived by his children, Duane (Diane) Semler and Bonnie Bowers, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Semler, on Jan. 9, 2021. A service will be held at a later date.

Lee Junior Roy

Lee Junior Roy, 97, died Monday, March 21, 2022, at home. Services were held March 29 at Iles Westover Chapel. Burial was at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Lee served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1946 and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Lee was a revenue auditor for the State of Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion, a lifelong member of VFW and an avid ham radio operator.

Marcella Joyce Yochum

Marcella Joyce Yochum, 94, of Urbandale died Thursday, March 10, 2022. She attended school in Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School in 1945. While in school, she was active in school plays and was a member of the girls basketball team that went to the Girls State Tournament three years in a row. She married John Yochum and moved to Newton in 1952, where they raised their three children, Jaci, Jolene and Scott. For 21 years, Marcella was the Welcome Wagon hostess in Newton, until she was promoted to regional field manager for lowa and part of Illinois. In 1975, she was named the National Field Manager of the Year. She retired after more than 41 years with Welcome Wagon.
Upon retiring, Marcella moved to Urbandale, where she enjoyed several activities including playing bridge at the Bridge House, exercising with the Silver Sneakers, Red Hat Club, and being a greeter at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Marcella is survived by daughter Jolene (Harold Davis) and son Scott (Debbie); son-in-law Sid Gordon; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her daughter Jaci Gordon.

Russell Lundy

Russell Lundy of Urbandale died Monday, March 21, 2022, at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines. A memorial service was held Saturday, March 26, at Covenant Christian Church in Urbandale.

Betty Ann Felt

Betty Ann Felt, 84, died Saturday, March 26, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in West Des Moines. She grew up in Jewell and graduated from South Hamilton High School. She worked for more than 25 years for Baker’s Cafeteria before becoming an education assistant for Heartland AEA. She married Duane “Dewey” Felt, and they raised their family and made Waukee home for more than 60 years. He preceded her in death.
Betty was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukee, which kept her active in many positions and committees.
She is survived by her children: Douglas Duane Felt, Michael Leroy Felt, Lisa Ann (Roger) Fenton and Lori Lin Felt, and many other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waukee Community Center, 875 Walnut St., Waukee. Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with arrangements.

Steven Graham

Steven Kenneth Graham, 50, died March 18, 2022, after suffering a stroke in October 2021. He is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Tiffany Graham, and their sons, Jordan Lee (Rachael) and Noah Kenneth (Kaylie), and many other relatives and friends.
His family lived in Urbandale then moved to Waukee when Steve was in third grade. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1990 and then attended Northeast Missouri State. He married Tiffany Howell in 1997, and the couple stayed in Waukee to raise their sons.
Steve was a DJ for many radio stations in Des Moines including Star 102.5 and Mix 100.3. He was an assistant manager with Dahl’s Food, and, for the past seven years was a night service manager with Stivers Ford.

Matthew Whitlock Eldridge

Matthew Whitlock Eldridge, 52, of Waukee, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Matt was born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Wheaton Central in 1988. He attended the University of Arizona and Iowa State University. Matt was a self-employed insurance broker. He was active in coaching his son’s Waukee youth football team and was instrumental in his son’s baseball activities.
