Delila Kae Deardorff

Delila Kae Deardorff, born on June 14, 1949, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, died on May 12, 2025. She lived a life that was a testament to faith, joy and unwavering dedication, both in her family and in her service to others.
She served in the U.S. Air Force for “20 years plus 1 day.” She was one of the first women to serve as a recruiter for the Air Force. She graduated from National Louis University, McClean, Virginia, with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1989, after having completed her earlier education in Aberdeen.
She was an avid Quester and decorator for Hope Church. She was an Alpha leader and taught core classes. She was past president of the National Guard Officers’ Women’s Association.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Deardorff; children, Krisanne (Michael) Myers, Stayce (Juan) Cardona and Dyana Hill; grandchildren, Luke (Sarah), Brendan, Ryan, Joshua, AJ, Omar, Claire, Owen, Nyomie, Jaydan, Jazmyn and Jocelyn; brother, Ron (Azalia) Doering; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; and close friend, Beverly Olson.
Delila was preceded in death by her sister, DeRae Wilson; and son, Jesse Deardorff.
Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel on May 23 at 11 a.m. with full military honors by the Air Force Honor Guard from Offutt Air Force Base, Bellevue, Nebraska.

Earl Sande

Earl Sande was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Dakota City. He graduated from high school in Humboldt in 1951. He then attended Drake University where he studied accounting. In 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ellen Schultz, and they were married for 62 years until Ruth’s passing in 2016. They had three children, David, Susan and Kathleen.
In 1954, he joined his father in the newly purchased Adel Lumber Co. in Adel. It later became Sande Lumber Co., Inc. and eventually S. Building Center, Inc. He remained in the retail building materials business for 47 years until its closing in 2001. He was also involved in developing residential and commercial land. He was a founding partner in San-Len-De Construction, Inc., Conmat Inc., and Crown Development Inc. where he was involved with the construction of many buildings and new homes in Adel. He also individually developed and constructed many new commercial lots and buildings.
He was a devoted and lifelong Lutheran and a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Adel. Through the years, he served on various church committees and church councils. He served as a member of Adel Planning and Zoning Board, Adel Chamber of Commerce Board, Adel Developers Board, Dallas County Developers Board, Hillcrest Country Club Board and Dallas County Draft Board. He was a long-time member of the Adel Rotary Club, having joined in February 1956. He served as a Rotarian board member, treasurer and twice as president.
His Scandinavian heritage was an important part of his life. He treasured his travels to visit relatives and friends in Norway and Denmark and continued a close relationship with them throughout his life. He was a member of Sons of Norway Lodge where he served as board member, treasurer and vice-president. He was also a member of Danish Brotherhood Lodge where he served as board member, vice-president and president.
He was happiest when he was interacting with family and friends. He maintained many childhood friendships and enjoyed attending reunions over the years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; brother, Neal; and son-in-law, Steve Riedemann.
He is survived by his children, David (Nanci) Sande, Susan Riedemann and Kathleen (Mark) Beaman; six grandchildren, Garrett (Heather) Riedemann, Chris (Anna) Sande, Hannah (Jeffery) Byers, Erin (Aaron) Ortbals, Emily (Robert) Auers and Benjamin Sande; 12 great-grandchildren, Tierney Riedemann, Emerson Riedemann, Malachi Riedemann, Jameson Ortbals, Freja Sande, Michaela Byers, Ella Ortbals, Jeffery III Byers, June Auers, Josie Auers, Jacob Ortbals and Ford Auers; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Sande and Barbara Lansing; and former son-in-law, Paul Ford.
Visitation was May 20 at Grace Lutheran Church, Adel, and his funeral was Wednesday, May 21. Donations may be made to Grace Lutheran, Adel Rotary, UnityPoint Health or ALK Positive, Inc.

Kenny chapman

Kenny E. Chapman

Kenny Chapman, 87, of Adel, died May 17, 2025. A visitation was held on May 22 at Caldwell Parrish, Adel. The funeral service will take place on Friday, May 23, at the old Adel High School at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow immediately after at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
Kenny was born on April 15, 1938, in Adel. He graduated from Adel High School, where he excelled in basketball and track. He had a passion for cars and racing. He not only participated in go-kart races but also had a knack for outrunning the police, often sharing tales of his escapades with his good friend, Jack.
Before settling down, he ventured to Montana to work on an oil rig, gaining experiences that he would recount with the flair of a true storyteller. Kenny eventually returned to Adel, where he met his first wife, Claudia, and welcomed four children: Terry, Tammy, Teresa and Todd. During this time, he formed lasting friendships with characters like Merle Haselhuhn, Jim Rhoten, Loyd Grove and Jack Chapman. He founded Ken’s TV and Appliance, now Adel & Winterset TV & Appliance - Heating and Cooling, which has served the community for the last 65 years.
At the age of 42, Kenny married Linda Lou Lockhart, and together they welcomed his fifth child, Kenny (KC) Chapman.
Kenny was truly a once-in-a-lifetime personality. His kindness, quick wit, ingenuity and care for others, combined with his business acumen and gentle fatherly nature, made him an icon in the community and a hero to all five of his children.
Kenny served as the grand marshal for the Sweet Corn Festival multiple times and is nearly famous for inventing the sweet corn cooker, responsible for cooking thousands — if not millions — of ears of corn over the years. He was also the vice chairman of the Quasquicentennial, a long-time member of the Lions Club, president of the Jaycees, and a long-time member of Adel’s Chamber of Commerce. If that weren’t enough, he served as a volunteer firefighter.
Kenny is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; children: Terry (Teresa), Tammy (Brett), Teresa, Todd (Chris), and KC (Emilee); 13 grandchildren, Michael, Mattie, Michelle, Brandon, William, Justin, Josh, Brittany, Kendra, Megan, Jordan, Jackson and Jayden; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Norah, Lillie, Beckett, Callan, Pearl, Cash, Jet, Liam, Landon, Brinlee, Grayson, Brecken, Greenly, Bella, Owen and Brooks.
Kenny was preceded in death by his first wife, Claudia; brothers, Wilford (Bill), Eugene, Harold, Don and Harlan Chapman; and sisters, Kathryn and Wilma.

Thomas Earixson, Jr.

Thomas Earixson, Jr. died May 17, 2025. A celebration of life will be held at Iles Grandview Park Chapel at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 with a reception and time to visit following.
Thomas Franklin Earixson, Jr. was born Nov. 28, 1958, in Des Moines. He graduated from Des Moines East High School and resided in Des Moines until moving to Adel Acres. Thomas enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jenifer Ferriss.
He is survived by his sisters, Sandra Earixson and Patricia Earixson; niece, Sara (Bob) Wiles; and two great nephews and one great niece.

Larry shepard

Laurence “Larry” Fred Shepard

Laurence Fred Shepard, known to many as Larry or “Shep,” doed May 2, 2025. Born Oct.7, 1936, in Des Moines, Larry lived a life marked by deep love for family, commitment to his community, and a joyful appreciation for fun and relaxation. Following graduation from North High School in Des Moines, Larry attended Iowa State University and served in the U.S. Army. He completed his degree at Drake University, where he met the love of his life, Norma Nighswonger. They married on May 26, 1962, and, in 2012, marked their 50th wedding anniversary with a dream visit to the Masters Tournament and a family trip to the Bahamas.
Larry and Norma opened Shepard Carpet and Furniture in Madrid in 1962. The store — later known as Shepard Home Furnishings — became a staple in the community and served customers for 37 years. Retirement brought winters in sunny golf destinations where the couple enjoyed golfing. Larry was especially proud of his seven career holes-in-one.
Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing at Lake Robbins on New Year’s Eve with Norma, and cooking up a good meal. He and Norma were part of a Bridge Club. He was a dedicated supporter of Madrid High School football, Iowa State and Drake sports. He was a member of the Lions Club and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
Larry is survived by his wife, Norma; daughters Tracy (Ken) Smalley and Julie (Jeremy) McCarty; grandchildren Erin (Josh) Prock, Laura (Isaac) Emery, and Andrew (and his girlfriend, Alicia); great-grandson Mason Shepard Prock; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nina and Paul Havens; niece, Heather (Chris) Carr; and nephews, Brian (Sandy) Havens and Mike Murphy. He was preceded in death by his son, Craig Laurence; his parents; and his sister, Jackie Murphy.
Later in life, Larry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The family encourages everyone to join the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative, a landmark study aimed at learning more about how brain disease starts, changes, and how to stop it. Join the study at michaeljfox.org/ppmi.
Funeral services were May 8 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Madrid. David sampel

David Dean Sampel

David “Dave” Dean Sampel was born and raised in Des Moines and was a proud Theodore Roosevelt High School graduate where he made friendships that lasted a lifetime. He loved two wives and had a Rolodex full of jobs. He served in the Peace Corps and various educational pursuits in the Des Moines Schools and Drake University. He earned his PhD from the University of Missouri Columbia.
He loved travel, especially biking in France and scuba diving with great friends.
The light of his life during his later years was becoming a dad to daughter Anjea Neff and son-in-law Justin, as well as grandpa to Aria, now 12. and Silas, now 9.
His life was a life well lived, even in death as he donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical School so the next generation of doctors could learn from him.
Per Dave’s wishes, no services will be held.

Garland K. Carver, 93, died May 8, 2025. His memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at The Bridge in Johnston, where his family will greet friends from 2-3 p.m. He will be interred at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19. Mary Lou Wilcox Doak

Mary Lou Wilcox Doak, 83, died on April 21, 2025. She grew up in Mt. Pleasant.
She enjoyed working with horses, training dogs and judging dog shows. She was regularly hired to judge AKC obedience trials throughout the Midwest. She spent several summers writing reviews of horse shows for the Des Moines Register.
However, her real life’s focus was her family, including daughters: Jennifer (Dan) Webster of Johnston, Mary Lyn (Pete) Sailor of Ames, Amy (Greg) Moore of Newton and Danielle (Zac) Christensen of Grimes, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She learned a new profession, accounting, and went to work to pay for the kids’ college. Mary Lou was a founding member of St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir for 50 years. As a volunteer, she served on the Johnston Park Board, Johnston Board of Adjustment and an advisory committee for Des Moines Area Education Agency.
Mary Lou met her husband, Richard, when they were students at Iowa State University. They enjoyed 64 years together.

Wesley ‘Homer’ E. Thompson

Wesley “Homer” E. Thompson, 82, died at home in Granger April 24, 2025, surrounded by his family. A retired printer, he was a pigeon racer in the DMI club.
Wesley is survived by his wife, Alice Fae; son, Kurt Thompson; daughter, Kris (Steve) Christenson; granddaughters, Bethany (Josh) Ruby and Leigha Christenson; great-grandson, Rivers Ruby; sister, Janet (Scott) Glass; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ron “Dino” Thompson.
A celebration of life will be held 1-4 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Ronald Dean Boyer of Adel and formerly of Grimes, died April 26, 2025. He was born May 1, 1931, in Ringgold County. Visitation will be Friday, May 9, 10-11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 410 S.E. Barbara Jean Mather

Barbara Jean Mather, 79, of Johnston, died at her home. She was born on Jan. 30, 1946, in Fort Dodge. She graduated from Twin Rivers School in 1964 then attended beauty school and worked as a cosmetologist for a time. Most of her career was spent as a receptionist and administrative assistant in the banking and dental industries.
On Oct. 4, 2003, she married James Mather. They made their home in Johnston where she cherished time spent with her grandchildren and serving her church. Barbara was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church where she served on many committees, sang in the choir, and served as a lay minister.
Barbara is survived by her husband, James; sons, Neil Baker and Mark (Wendy) Baker; daughter, Trisha Ellis; chosen daughter, Amber Thompson; step-daughter, Trisha Mather; siblings, Judy Swanson, Ron (Sandy) Raney and Cindy Fitch; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

Cleo Fred Murphy

Cleo Fred Murphy, 90, of Johnston, died Sunday, April 20, 2025. Born on Nov. 3, 1934, in New York City, he grew up in Des Moines. He graduated from Roosevelt High School. He attended the University of Iowa and started on the football team his freshman year. After an injury, he transferred to Cornell College, where he played football and baseball. He married Marilyn Murdy in 1958. His career was in marketing for the insurance industry.
Cleo will be remembered for his warmth, charisma and genuine interest in others. At Brio, he endeared himself to residents and staff alike with his kindness and humor. He enjoyed the outdoors, was a St. Louis Cardinals fan and an avid golfer. He adored his nine grandchildren.
Cleo was a founding member of Windsor United Methodist Church in Des Moines, where his faith, service and community spirit were constant threads throughout his life.
Survivors include daughter, Linda (John) Waldron; son, Bruce (Kerrie) Murphy; grandchildren, Luke, Courtney Branden, Lauren, Ashleigh, Laura, Benjamin, Meridith and Carolyne; and 13 great grandchildren. Cleo was preceded in death by wife, Marilyn Kay (Murdy) Murphy, and sisters Dolores and Dorothy.
A memorial service was April 24 at Iles Westover Chapel, Des Moines. Memorials may be directed to Windsor United Methodist Church or Wesley Hospice.

Alice Bernita Hesse

Alice Bernita Hesse, 89, died April 16, 2025. Alice was born on Sept. 16,1935 in Waverly. She graduated from Tripoli High School in 1953. On April 8,1956, she married Arlyn Hesse at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Artesian. She worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for six years.
She helped with farm chores, gardening, cooking and laundry. She was a talented cook and baker who liked to prepare delicious food for family and friends. Her grandchildren have fond memories of helping her make her applesauce and strawberry jam. Alice enjoyed traveling with Arlyn, gardening and, most of all, spending time with and attending the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was everything to her.
Alice worked at Sears at Merle Hay Mall for 27 years. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She resided at Brio Senior Living Community in Johnston.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Arlyn; four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by daughter Tammy (Mark) Pierson, and their children, Heidi (Justin) Williams, Hillary (Abby) White and Ian (Emily Alexander) Pierson, and two great-granddaughters, Adeline and Maisy Williams; son, Kirk (Deb) Hesse and their children, Nick Hesse and great-grandchildren Kaeden Meissen and Lincoln and Bailey Hesse and Matt (Lisa) Hesse and great-grandchildren Philip and Alice Hesse; one brother, Fritz Heine; and many caring nieces and nephews.
A visitation was held at Brio of Johnston April 21. A memorial service will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 11 a.m on. Tuesday, April 22. Karen Kay Jones, 82, of Perry, died Thursday, April 10, 2025, at her home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel with burial at Panther Creek Cemetery west of Adel. The family will greet friends Friday, April 18, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Karen was born on Jan. 20, 1943, in Newton. She was an avid bowler, secretary, farmer, expert fisherman, chicken wrangler, pool care specialist and, most of all, a supportive, loving wife and mother.
Karen is survived by five children: Chris (Tammy) Wheeldon, Rhonda (Jeff) Wheeldon, Liz (Rod) Zabel, David (Pauline) Jones and Martha (Ronnie) Wiedman; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Rod (Kathy) DeReus and Dale DeReus; two sisters, Kora DeReus and Pam DeReus; one son-in-law, Dan Sheehan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Farmer” Jones, and her daughter, Sarah Sheehan.
Lois martin

Lois LaVonne Martin

Lois LaVonne Martin, 95, died March 5, 2025. She was born in Monroe on March 19, 1929. She graduated from Runnells High School and attended Cedar Falls Teaching College. She enjoyed teaching kindergarten in Redfield and Pocahontas. While in Redfield, she met Roger Martin. They married on Aug. 21, 1949, had seven children and enjoyed 73 years of marriage.
The family farmed near Redfield. LaVonne was an active member of the Redfield Methodist Church and later the Adel Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, was a 4-H leader, and was a member of the garden club, bridge club, Farm Bureau, neighborhood pitch club, square dancing group, and many more organizations and activities. She was instrumental in the opening of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and the Reiman Gardens in Ames. She enjoyed taking groups of women on social outings which usually involved a stop at a tea room.
In 1963, they moved to a farm one mile west of Adel that Roger farmed and later purchased. In 1970, LaVonne and Roger built their dream home at Lake Panorama. They enjoyed being members of the HALO club and Par 3 golf course, where LaVonne shot a hole-in-one.
When the Iowa farm crisis hit in the 1980s, the dream home was sold and LaVonne worked as a nurse’s aid, substitute teacher and at Panora greenhouse to help Roger keep the Adel farm. Later in their lives, they purchased the Martin family farm in Redfield where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
The family enjoyed traveling extensively. LaVonne liked entertaining and being surrounded by friends and family. She will be remembered for her quick wit, laughter and love for life and family.
LaVonne is survived by her children, Darwin Martin (Joyce), Natalie Pendroy (Jim), David Martin (Karen), Dallas Martin, Minalee Martin Scheuerman and Duane Martin (Lorie); 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren.
LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Martin; her son, Daniel Len Martin; her brothers, Dick, Ron and Orville Harmison; and her sister, Alice Pittman. 
A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Adel United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. A private family inurnment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.caldwellparrish.com.

Sherry Fenn

Sherry Lea Fenn, 76, of Perry, died March 4, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Sherry was born on Dec. 15, 1948, in Fort Dodge. She graduated from the Rockwell City School District in 1966. After school, she met the love of her life, Clifford Leon Fenn. The couple were married on April 4, 1970, in Grant City, Missouri.
Sherry was a stay-home mom and homemaker for many years so she could raise Lamont and Katina. Once they were old enough, she began working as a housekeeper in several different hotels around the Des Moines area. Her children were the light of her eyes.
Sherry enjoyed playing cards, coffee from the truck stop with friends, reading, fishing with her husband Clifford and children, music and crocheting blankets.
Sherry is survived by her two children, Lamont Fenn of Van Meter and Katina Carmichael and her husband, Rodney, of Adel; grandchildren, Sierra and husband, Nick McAdam, Savannah and husband, Devin Goehring, Tanna and husband, Zach Ridge, and Dakota Carmichael; and many more family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Clifford in 2018.
Graveside services were held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter on March 10 at 12:30 p.m. with a luncheon that followed at Patrick’s Restaurant. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.caldwellparrish.com.

Joseph Roth

Joseph Roth, 72, died March 16, 2025, at Kavanagh Hospice House. He was born April 23, 1952, in Des Moines to Chuck and Katie Roth. He married Vickie Roth. They had a son, Steve. Joe joined the Iowa National Guard, and they made their life in Johnston.
Joe was a hardworking man who started his career working at John Deere and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He would proudly ask folks what time they got their mail as speedy, accurate efficiency was important to him. In his free time, he enjoyed games of chance in Las Vegas and locally.
Joe is survived by his son, Steve. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Vickie.
Visitation was Monday, March 24, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, 4600 Meredith Drive, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines. Josephine Helen Ross

Josephine Helen Ross, 83, of Earlham, died Feb. 18, 2025, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 24, 1941, to Joseph John and Gertrude Josephine (Dwinnell) Marxen in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She had lived in Winterset for 18 years, coming from Minneapolis.
Josephine was a member of the Earlham Church of Christ in Earlham. She had been a nurse and worked in dietary care. Josephine and Edward Irece Ross were married on Feb. 12, 1987.
Josephine is survived by her children, Linda, Barbara, John (Lanae), Eula and Anthony; her grandkids, Cierra (Dionne), Zachary (Estrella), Dillon (Shania), Aija, Trey, Paige, Edward and Kiara; her great-grandkids, Zoey, Conner, Lyvia, Chance, Princetin, Londyn, William and Kingston; her brother, Tony; and her sisters, Pauline, Louise and Patricia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Irece Ross; grandson, Dominic; and brother, Tommy.

Ronald Gordon Cooper

Ronald Gordon Cooper, 82, of Des Moines died March 10, 2025. Born on Aug. 7, 1942, in Knoxville, Ron lived most of his younger years around the greater Des Moines area, attending high school in Indianola.
Ron spent much of his life in service to his country. In 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served a tour in Vietnam. In 1974, he joined the Iowa Air National Guard, working as a life support specialist until he retired as senior master sergeant in 1994. It was through his military travels that he met his wife, Sharon, whom he was married to for more than 50 years.
He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and enjoying the outdoors, including time at the family cabin on the Des Moines River. He liked fishing, playing cards and bowling in a league. After his retirement, Ron enjoyed working in the yard and was passionate about feeding the birds, squirrels and even an occasional neighborhood cat. He and Sharon traveled frequently, staying at casinos, visiting their children and grandchildren, and making countless cherished memories along the way.
Ron is survived by his children, Cephus Cooper-Payne (Lisa), Doris Lourance (Brian), Misty Todd (Dan) and Randy Cooper (Emily); his brother, Denny Cooper (Melody); sister, Connie Boucher; and by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Cooper.
Visitation was March 18 at Caldwell Parish Funeral Home in Adel followed by burial service at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. Memorial donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Honor Flight Network.

William Earl ‘Bill’ Renfrow

William Earl “Bill” Renfrow, 93, of Adel, died March 13, 2025, following a short illness. Visitation will be held from 12:30-2 p.m., on Friday March 21, at Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Brethren Cemetery, Dallas Center.
Bill was born on Feb. 24, 1932, in Summersville, Missouri, to Luther R. and Mildred P. (House) Renfrow. The family moved to Iowa when Bill was a child and lived mainly in Dallas County. He was drafted into the Army, serving honorably for four years during the Korean conflict. He returned to Dallas County and began his career at Hy-Line International and retired in 1994.
His lifelong passion was horses. His expertise and skill as a trainer were sought throughout Iowa and beyond. Most evenings and weekends would find him in his arena or attending horse shows throughout central Iowa. He also enjoyed farming in his spare time.
Bill was married to Rowena Murrell in 1956 in Winterset, and they made their home in rural Adel.
Bill is survived by his children, Brian (Leslie) Renfrow and Becky (Scott) Schumann; grandchildren, Jaimie (Regi) Francois, Kylie Moore, Kayden Renfrow, Connor Renfrow, Sierra (Craig) Post and Nick (Lindsey) Christian; six great-grandchildren; friend Jan Renshaw; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowena; sister, Wilma Bender; and brother, Wilbur Renfrow.

Charles Dean Haden

Charles Dean Haden died Feb. 19, 2025. He was born on May 21, 1935, to Elbert Wayne and Iona DeVee (Brideson) Haden in Perry. He grew up in Panora. After graduating from high school in 1953, he attended Iowa State University for two years studying ag engineering and training in the Army ROTC. On March 26, 1955, Charlie married Roxie May Smithson.
The family farmed in the area, and Charlie took up backhoe work. He did extensive work for Northwestern Bell Telephone/US West while continuing to farm. He installed many septic systems at Lake Panorama and the surrounding area.
Charlie was a lifelong follower of Christ. An ardent student of the Bible, he participated in and led countless Bible studies and taught Sunday School for many years.
Charlie approached life with a rare blend of warmth, wisdom and wit. Family was a cornerstone of his life, and he thoroughly enjoyed his time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted caregiver to his loving bride to his last days.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Roxie; two daughters, Beth (Marvin) Rasmussen and Lynelle (Norm) Diers; son, Brian Haden; grandchildren, Jarrod Diers, Jolyn Hartson, Micah Rasmussen and Miriam Mendoza; great-grandchildren, Noah and Brianna Diers, Sophia, Xander and Angel Diers, Mariah and Jordan Hartson, Isabella Mendoza, Ellyanna, Aliyah and Fynneas Rasmussen; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Saundra Boots and Sharon Mattke; brother, Melvin McCord; daughter, Lori; son, Greg; and grandson, Jeremy Diers.
A Celebration of Life was held March 1 at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Panora. A luncheon and procession to Pleasant Hill Cemetery followed.

Susan Lee O’Leary

Susan Lee O’Leary, 85, died Feb. 18, 2025, at her residence in Panora. She was born in Whitefish, Montana, to Laura and Edwin McKenzie in 1939. She grew up at Bay Point on Whitefish Lake. She married Jim Llarinas in 1962. They had three children: John, Ed and Erin. They divorced, and she married Arthur O’Leary in 1973.
They lived in the northwest and Alaska. In 2018, Sue made a move to Iowa to be with her daughter, Erin, and her family. She resided at Lake Panorama with her beloved cat, Ebby. Sue liked to entertain and would invite anyone to a party or dinner. All who knew her were touched by her joy, hospitality, kindness and love. Sue was most happy when all her family was together.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur O’Leary; first husband, Jim Llarinas; sisters, Faye Holm and Nancy Garrett; and many dear friends.
She is survived by her three children, John and wife, Lisa; Ed and wife, Holly; Erin Merschman and husband, Alan; her youngest sister, Kona Luke; grandchildren, Steven, Jennifer, Kelsey, Abby, Jacob and Joel; and countless friends.

Janice Loe Jungmann Daly

Janice Loe Jungmann Daly died on Feb. 6, 2025. She was at home and surrounded by her loving husband of 62 years and their four daughters and families. Jan was born in Des Moines on Sept. 1, 1940, and grew up near Booneville. She was proud to be a Van Meter Bulldog and University of Iowa Hawkeye graduate, where she met the love of her life in the School of Dentistry while studying to be a dental hygienist. They married on May 25, 1963. They moved from West Des Moines to rural De Soto in 1971 to raise their four daughters on the farm.
“Nanner” was the best at everything raising and nurturing four daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grands.  She was an avid gardener and played the piano and organ at church. She served on the Adel DeSoto School Board 12 years and was a founding member of the Adel DeSoto Scholarship Foundation Board. Recently she served on the Dallas County Compensation Board.  She perfected the gifts of unconditionally giving and loving. Bill and Jan enjoyed square dancing, couples bridge and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Lyla Jungmann; her in-laws, W. D. and Evelyn Daly; brother, Conrad Jungmann; and grandson, York McKinley. She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Karla (Steve) Hocker, Kris (Tim) Boettger, Karin (Drew) Van Werden and Kendra Daly; grandchildren, Daly Hardy, Reese Hardy, Ike (Katie) Boettger, Adrienne Boettger, Charles Van Werden, Gabe Van Werden and Dane Van Werden; great-grandchildren Clay and Kiley Boettger; siblings Jim Jungmann, Ron (Donna) Jungmann and Judy (Steve) Saltzman; and special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Louise Mague

Louise Mague, 84, died Feb. 16, 2025, at Mercy Westlakes Hospital in West Des Moines. She was born Sept. 8, 1940, in Arnett, Oklahoma, to Charles (Nonie) and Nellie (Harmon) Bowles. Louise graduated from Adel High School in 1958. Shortly after, she married John Mague on Nov. 8, 1958. They had three children, Lisa, Steve and Sue. Louise ran an in-home daycare until 1974 when she started working at the Department of Health and Human Services in Adel until January 2002.
Louise spent her years of retirement attending grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ activities, playing cards and marbles with her siblings and playing 500 and Mahjong card games. She was also a great supporter of her daughter Sue’s dance career, especially when her daughter started teaching at Adel Tumbling & Dance Club. She would assist her in many ways. She also made homemade pies for her daughter Lisa’s restaurant, Patrick’s, for numerous years. She was the siblings’ chauffeur for many years, taking them to their appointments or just going out to eat.
She is survived by her children, Steve Mague (Angie) and Susan Dunsmoor (Chris); grandchildren, Melissa Mickael, Justin Mickael (Kady), Elisabeth Mickael, Kayla Mague, John Mague (Ashley), Rachel Ivy (James), Trae Dunsmoor and Scott Dunsmoor; and great-grandchildren Elsie, Charlotte, Violet, Beckett, Zander, Lola, Lexi, Kendall, Rhett, Sabina and Eliza.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Mague; daughter, Lisa Mickael; and siblings and siblings-in-law, Frances Bowles (infant), Florence (Robert) Stucker, Benny Stucker, Charles (Joan) Bowles, Patricia Spoerry and Rita Windust (Art Keller).
A funeral service was held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel Friday, Feb. 21. A private burial for the immediate family was held. Dennis Michael Dunphy

Dennis Michael Dunphy, 91, was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Des Moines and died on Feb. 23, 2025. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1951.
Dennis was a highly skilled house painter and worked in and around Des Moines for years before moving to California. He lived in Santa Monica for several years, often going back and forth to Des Moines during this time before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, and then eventually back to Iowa.
He was an avid walker, often walking several miles, multiple times a day, no matter the weather. He read the paper cover to cover daily and finished every crossword puzzle, jumble and sudoku he could get his hands on. He was a steadfast Iowa Hawkeyes fan, LA Dodgers fan, enjoyed horse racing, golf and watching westerns. He was an incredible storyteller and a keeper of memories — the person in the family we all knew could answer any question, recount any event, and remember every detail.
While Dennis never married or had children of his own, he was a much beloved uncle and integral presence in the lives of his many nieces and nephews over the years.
Survivors include sister Mary Jean Dunley of Urbandale, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by sister Ann Marie Lundy and three brothers, George, Lawrence and Joseph Dunphy.
According to his wishes, Dennis was cremated. At this time a date has not been set for a celebration of life mass.

Born on Oct. 21, 1949, to Lee and Katherine (Foltz) Miller, Greg spent his life working various jobs including with the railroad and Lennox Industries. He had a deep passion for cars and all things racing, especially muscle cars and drag racing. In his youth, he was a golden glove boxer and a skilled pool player. He was an avid fan of wrestling and a devoted fan of Monday Night Raw. In his later years, he switched his Chicago Bears alliance to become a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed many adventures up north going to the dirt track races, boating or just having conversations on Joe and Nicki’s deck with family and friends.
His warm personality and infectious sense of humor made him the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with anyone. Whether sharing a joke, telling a story, or simply lending a listening ear, he had a way of making those around him feel valued and appreciated. Above all, Greg’s family brought him the greatest joy. He shared a deep bond with his son, Kelle, who was also his best friend. Later in life, he restored his relationship with his daughter, Nicole, and his eldest son, Josh. He took immense pride in all his children and treasured every moment with all his grandchildren.
Greg is survived by his three children: Josh Miller of New Orleans; Nicole (Joe) Till and their children, Olivia and Joey, of Hudson, Wisconsin; and Kelle (Emily) Miller and their daughter, Frances, of Madrid; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Katherine Miller; his son, Jamie Miller; and his brothers, Mike and Joe Miller.

Charles O’Hollearn, 85, died at home on Feb. 9, 2025. Charles was born Dec. 5, 1939, in Lawler. Following high school, Charles served honorably in the U.S. Army. A successful salesman and manager, Charles had a long career working at Jim Hawk Truck Trailers. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Joseph, Thomas and Daniel; grandchildren, Zachary, Bradley and Kayla; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kyler, Bella and Wrenley; his siblings, Janet, Robert, Brian and Mike; and his two little doggies, Dolly and Toby. Delbert “Duff” Lawrence Countryman

Delbert “Duff” Lawrence Countryman, 70, of Redfield died at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids on Feb. 4, 2025. He was born Dec. 25, 1974, in Iowa City. He grew up in Redfield and attended Dexfield Community Schools. Delbert married Deborah LeFleur in1974. They later divorced.
Delbert was a member of the Redfield Historical Society and volunteered at the Redfield Museum, sharing the history of Redfield with many who visited the museum and Old Settlers celebrations. “Duff” was also a genealogy buff. Delbert enjoyed fishing and playing his guitar in many “jam” sessions in the Redfield and Stuart areas.
He was a devoted father and an awesome grandfather, loving each and every quirk of his grandchildren and children. He used his stubbornness to guide his grandchildren to be better. Delbert served the military in the Air Force.He remained routine in meeting with his buddies, sharing drinks and playing darts.
Delbert is survived by his children, Lori (Jeremy) Kirk, Heather (Jason) Monaghan, Tammie (Todd) Venne, Sheila (Tiffany) Countryman, Robert Kirk and step-daughter Susan Fox; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Beverley (Gary) Rosenbeck; brothers, Raymond Countryman and David (Kara) Countryman. He was preceded in death by his parents, D. Wayne and Susie Countryman.

Kelly Gene Broyles

Kelly Gene Broyles, 67, of Adel, died Jan. 21, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was born on July 30, 1957, in Des Moines.
Kelly approached life with an adventurous spirit and found joy in the simple pleasures. He was an outdoor enthusiast who lived his life to the fullest. He was a proud father of four who found joy in sharing countless stories and cherished memories, watching the Kansas City Chiefs play, and watching his sons wrestle. Kelly treasured his high school years, forming lifelong friendships as a member of “The Denims.” He had a lifelong passion for classic cars, spending endless hours restoring and admiring vintage models. He enjoyed fishing and cribbage.
Kelly is survived by his four children, Buc Broyles (Emily Six), Sara Broyles (Chris Nichols), Carly Broyles (Jason Kajewski) and Wyatt Broyles (Emily Owen); four sisters, Chris Pierce, Denise Moses, Shelly Broyles and Bonnie Cummings (Ed Cummings); and 10 grandchildren.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Carol “Bill” and Dorothy Broyles; sister, Pam Broyles; and the mother of his children, Carla Williams.

Bill and Jan moved from West Des Moines to rural De Soto in 1971 to raise their four daughters on the farm. “Nanner” was the best at everything, raising and nurturing four daughters, eight grandchildren and two great grands. She created dance costumes, made sure the girls had piano lessons all while producing a bountiful garden every season and faithfully selecting and practicing the piano and organ selections for the weekly church services.  She served on the Adel De Soto School Board 12 years and was a founding member of the Adel DeSoto Scholarship Foundation Board. Recently she served on the Dallas County Compensation Board.
When Bill and Jan had time to get away from the homestead, they enjoyed square dancing with the Cee-Do-Cee Club in Dallas Center and playing couples bridge with a lively Adel bunch. She was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye (especially football) fan.  The couple enjoyed traveling — and most recently enjoyed their time in Florida where they spent every January.
She is preceded in death by by her parents, Elmer and Lyla Jungmann; her in-laws, W. Jacquelyn “Jackie” Kay Daugherty

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Kay Daugherty, 73, of Adel, died Feb. 4, 2025. Funeral services were Feb. 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Interment was at the Panther Creek Cemetery in Adel. Jackie was born in Fort Dodge May 6, 1951. She went to college at Northwest Missouri State where she graduated with a degree in English.
Jackie married Tim Daugherty on May 26, 1973. Jackie worked at Younkers until becoming a mother when she shifted her focus to raising their two sons, Tony and Joe, and being a homemaker and wife. She and Tim enjoyed spending time with their four grandsons, enjoyed trips to the casino and cheering on the Chicago Cubs. The last family vacation Jackie took with Tim, Tony, Joe and their families was to see the Chicago Cubs play in 2016 when she finally got to see them win the World Series.
Jackie is survived by her sons, Tony (Vicki) Daugherty and Joe (Sarah) Daugherty; her four grandchildren, Evan, Blake “Tony”, Caleb and Andrew “Joe”; her siblings, Sandra (Dan) McComb, Judy (Tom) Smithson and Ed (Sherie) Zoss. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim Daugherty; and her parents, Leonard and Vivian Zoss.

Wayne gaedelman

Wayne Henry Geadelmann

Wayne Henry Geadelmann, 88, died at Spurgeon Senior Community, Dallas Center, on Feb. 1, 2025. He was born on a farm outside of Clarence on May 9, 1936. He graduated from Clarence High School and Iowa State University, where he majored in Ag Economics and was part of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).  He was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He had a long career with Brenton Bank, retiring as president from the Adel Branch. He married Martha Jean Meyer in July 7, 1962. He and friends founded Land Investors, Inc. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He also served the community through his work for the local Rotary chapter, Adel Developers, and the Chamber of Commerce. Wayne retired from Brenton Banks in March of 1993.
After his wife’s death, he traveled to Riga, Latvia, where he spent several months helping the country transition from communism to capitalism by assisting in developing their banking system. Back home he was instrumental in raising funds for Adel’s new public library building, which was finished in 2006.
In early 1995, Wayne married Ann Jacobson Jungmann.
He was an avid ISU football and men’s basketball fan, planted many trees, was physically active, and enjoyed time at his grandchildren’s activities and in Lander, Wyoming, where he had a “cabin” near Ann’s family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Merlin Geadelmann; his first wife, Martha Jean Meyer Geadelmann; and his son-in-law, Joe Austin. He is survived by his brother, Gene Geadelmann; his sister, Roseann (Terry) Schneider; his sister-in-law, Shirley Geadelmann; his wife, Ann Jungman; his daughter, Anne Austin; his sons Steve (Jill) Geadelmann and Scott (Lori) Geadelmann; his stepsons, Matt (Krystal) Jungmann and Jed (Julie) Jungmann; and his grandchildren, Henry Austin, Benjamin Geadelmann, Louisa Austin, Lander Geadelmann, William Geadelmann, Jackson Geadelmann, and Ann’s grandchildren, Jack, Luke, Kate and Audrey.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 14 from 3-5 p.m. at Caldwell-Parish Funeral Home in Adel. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at Adel United Methodist Church, 115 S. Dayna Lynn Flint

Dayna Lynn Flint, 65, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation and rosary service were held Feb. 7 at Iles Westover Chapel. Funeral services were Feb. 8 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Additional services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Baue Funeral Home in Cave Springs, Missouri. Burial will follow at St. Charles Memorial Gardens.
Dayna was born Aug. 22, 1959, in St. Charles, Missouri, to Donald and Joyce (Monroe) Ohlms. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. She was a medical technologist at DePaul Hospital, where she met her future husband, Jerry Flint. When Jerry went to graduate school at the University of Kentucky, they married, and Dayna worked at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and supported the family. Once Jerry’s career began, the family moved to several places. Dayna concentrated her efforts on her family and volunteering. One of her most memorable experiences was living in Singapore where she organized her daughter’s education and supported the Singapore American School and Tabitha Foundation Cambodia.
When Dayna returned to the United States, she volunteered for several organizations, including PEO International, PTA as vice president of fundraising, Junior League Des Moines, Junior League St. Louis, Girl Scouts of America, and National Charity League. In her 40 years of volunteering, Dayna’s leadership helped raise more than $8 million.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and traveling with her family. She visited more than 30 countries and most of the United States.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Flint; daughter, Bayley Flint Johnson and her husband, Matthew; siblings Cheryl (Peter) Perkins and Todd (Erin) Ohlms; and nieces and nephew, Abby Perkins and Joseph and Grace Ohlms. Dayna was preceded in death by her parents.

Richard John “Dick” Azinger Sr.

Richard John “Dick” Azinger Sr., 87, died Jan. 28, 2025. He was born on Aug. 6, 1937,  in Keokuk and graduated high school in Montrose. He received multiple advance degrees from colleges and universities including St. Ambrose and the University of Iowa. He married Mary Ann Kearns on Aug. 11, 1962, in Keokuk. The couple lived in DeWitt for more than 50 years raising their five children. Dick spent his life dedicated to teaching, inspiring countless students throughout his career.
Dick’s love for family, reading, scrapbooking and gardening (vegetables and flowers) was evident to all who knew him. You could always see Dick and Mary Ann at one of the numerous sporting events of their children and grandchildren. Black glass was another passion of theirs, and they grew quite a collection. Dick also presented travel logs at the local movie house. Dick also loved doing calligraphy and making cutout artwork for special events.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lorretta; his siblings, Herman “Bud” and his wife, Pat, Tom, and William “Bill” and Donna. Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, their five children, Kevin (Connie), Kirk (Lisa), Rich (Janet), Todd (Stefanie) and Jennifer (Bob); his bother, Roy (Liz); 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A visitation and memorial service will be held on Feb. 8 at St. Boniface Church in Waukee starting at 9 a.m. There will be a light luncheon following the mass. Burial will be held at a later date in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Croix Hospice of West Des Moines.

Jody Lynn Schutte

Jody Lynn Schutte, 57, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025. She was born Dec. 16, 1967, in Jefferson and spent her childhood on a farm outside of Redfield, where her favorite pastimes included camping with her family, vacationing with her best friend, and helping her dad on the farm.
Jody graduated from Dexfield High School in 1986 and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1992. With a compassionate heart and a love for people, Jody had a natural calling toward a nursing career that spanned more than 25 years.
She married her husband, Russ, on April 5, 1996. To this marriage, they welcomed Sidney Rae and made their home in Van Meter. As a family, they would vacation often to anywhere that had a nice beach, spend a lot of time at their lake home on Sun Valley Lake, and play a lot of cribbage with friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Sidney (Luke) Anderson; parents, Larry and Pam Godwin; granddaughters, Hensley and Murphy Anderson; sister, Teresa (Rick) Long; brother, Nyle (Tina) Godwin; nieces Kori (Mike) Danner, Bailey (Brandon) Pruitt and Hunter Godwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russ, and nephew, Christopher Long.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 3 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Morrisburg Cemetery in Stuart. Dennis Edward Sutherland, 78, of Van Meter, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Van Meter American Legion Hall. Dennis was born on Nov. 6, 1946, in northwest Iowa. He graduated from Adel High School in 1964. Dennis took great pride in his military service, and the lessons he learned during those years remained with him for the rest of his life.
On Sept. 25, 1976, Dennis married Elaine Culbertson in Van Meter. Together, they built a beautiful life and a big, loving family.
A proud member of the Van Meter American Legion Post No. 403, Dennis dedicated much of his time to his fellow veterans. He was also a member of the Van Meter Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years. He worked as a machinist at John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1995, and later spent several years working in conservation.
He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and beekeeping. Dennis was also a gifted cook and canner and took great pride in his famous brisket. He enjoyed building and repairing anything he could, from smokers to birdhouses.
His family was his greatest joy. He was a devoted husband, father and “Papa,” who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Sutherland; children, Christy (Mark) Vesey, Kimberley (Marvin) Firch, Sean (Kathy) Culbertson and Scott (Cindi) Culbertson; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sandy (Jim) Garoutte, Deani (Jeff) Montang, Ronnie (Kristi) Sutherland, Joani (Floyd) Groves and Carol (Bill) Barrow; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Lois Sutherland, and his brother, Roger Sutherland.

Geraldine “Gerry” Helen Mangione

Geraldine “Gerry” Helen Mangione, 84, died Jan. 23, 2025, in Des Moines. A visitation and memorial mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on March 22. Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m., and mass will begin at 11:30 a.m. Private burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.
Gerry was born on Feb. 10, 1940, to Louis and Helen (Szyska) Dusik in Chicago, Illinois. She attended all Catholic schools until graduating with a food and nutrition degree from Mundelein College, which has since been incorporated into Loyola University Chicago. Before her retirement in 2002, Gerry worked as the vice president of sales for Classic Coffee Service for 17 years.
She married Salvatore Mangione on Jan. 19, 1963, at Five Holy Martyrs Church in Chicago. Together they raised two children, David and Lisa, in Downers Grove, Illinois.
She was the heart of her family and always had an open door for her loved ones. It brought her immense joy to host countless family events and prepare meals that made every occasion feel special. She also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She was a member of the National Audubon Society.
Gerry is survived by her husband, Sal; son, David Mangione; daughter, Lisa (Alan) Vontalge, of Johnston; grandchildren, Adam Mangione, Kara Mangione, Ella Mangione, Emma (Sean) Grogan and Hunter (Rachel) Vontalge; brother, Richard (Barbara) Dusik; and various other beloved friends and family members. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Kimberly Sue Dalton

Kimberly Sue Dalton, 65, Adel, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Kim was born June 24, 1959, in Des Moines to David Carroll and Phylis Jean (Elliott) Keasey. After her schooling, she worked and raised two daughters, Angi and Traci. She later had a son, Freddie Dalton, III.
In March of 1979, Kim was in a car accident that left her paralyzed; however, that did not take away her fight, courage and bravery to continue on. Kim loved the river, fishing, camping, being on a boat, her family and spending time with grandkids, great grandkids and Punky, her beloved cat.
Preceding her in death were her parents, son, and longtime partner, Andrew “AJ” James. Survivors include daughters, Angi Ostrem and Traci Vargas; brother, David Randall (Laura) Keasey; a host of grandkids; four great grandkids; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at Iles Brandt Chapel, 1301 Ash St., Dallas Center. Interment at Brethren Cemetery will take place the summer of 2025. Kim will be laid to rest next to AJ and Freddie Dalton, III.

Rita L. Windust

Rita L. Windust, 74, died Jan. 11, 2025. She was born on Feb. 5, 1950, to Charles “Nonie” and Nellie (Harmon) Bowles. Rita was raised in Adel and graduated from Adel High School. She briefly resided in Berlin, Germany, where her high school love was stationed with the military. She married Art Keller in 1971. Rita gained two stepsons, Kevin and Ken, from the union. The couple spent many years fostering children and were happy to fold Lynnette into their family. They later had two children, Lane and Amber. Rita ran an in-home daycare for several years.
Rita became widowed in 1992 and began working outside the home in various administrative positions. She married James “Jim” Windust in 1996. She retired from the National Pork Board as a mailroom and administrative assistant in 2018 and was delighted to be back home again taking care of Jim, her cherished pups, and also helping care for her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to the casino, spending time with her siblings, visiting Branson and watching game shows. She shared her cooking and crocheted blankets.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of nearly 29 years; her beloved dog, Katie; children, Kevin (Kim) Keller, Ken (Toni) Keller, Lynnette Ryan, Lane (Carie) Keller, Amber (Cody) Dakan; grandchildren, Kelsey (Michael) Pieken, Anastacia Keller, KC Keller, Caiden and Paige Keller, and Ella, Caleb and Delaney Dakan; siblings, Andy Bowles, Fern Stucker and Louise Mague; as well as many other extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband, Art Keller; and siblings and siblings-in-law, Frances Bowles (infant), Florence (Robert) Stucker, Benny Stucker, Charles (Joan) Bowles, Bonnie Bowles, John Mague and Patricia Spoerry.

Steve Blair

Steve Blair, 72, of Adel, died Jan. 7, 2025, at his home. Steve was born on June 22, 1952, in Des Moines to Paul Junior and Katherine Mae (Duncan) Blair. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1971. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. On Nov, 28, 2003, Steve married Ollie Mae Smith at Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines. For many years, Steve owned his own business fixing alternators and starters. He later worked for the natural gas companies in Texas as a compressor mechanic.
Steve enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, camping, anything he could fix or tinker with, firearms, finding new hobbies and new business ventures, cutting the sleeves off his shirts and writing offensive comments on Facebook. Steve had a rough and stubborn exterior, but, past that, was a softness in his heart that was full of love for his family.
Steve is survived by his wife of 21 years, Ollie; children, Steve (Kristi) Blair, Lori (Robert) Lucas and John Blair; step-children, Esteban Leal and Amanda Blair; brothers, Robert (Mary) Blair and J. Martin (Debra) Blair; along with a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Tomas Blair.

RaAnna Kay Withrow

RaAnna Kay Withrow of Perry was born in Des Moines to Billy Ray and Deanna Mae Buel on Nov. 11, 1959. She died Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 65. RaAnna lived her entire childhood in Van Meter, where she met her best friend, Janet Dayton. This friendship stood the test of time. She graduated from Van Meter High School in 1978, receiving not only her diploma but an award for perfect attendance. Later in life, she developed a lasting friendship with Vickie Riemer.
After high school, RaAnna joined the workforce and met her first husband, Dallas Martin. Five children were born to this union. She would later meet and marry her second husband, Lawrence. To this union, two more children were born.
She was in a bowling league during her young adulthood. She was a talker and met no stranger. RaAnna enjoyed taking her children fishing, on camping trips and being involved in their lives. She loved hosting holiday parties that often resulted in card and board games. Like her parents, she also had a love for Elvis Presley. There was one annual event RaAnna never missed — The Iowa State Fair. She was a great woman, wife, sister, mother and grandma with a kind, gentle soul and generous heart.
RaAnna is survived by her husband, Lawrence Withrow; her children, Suezanne Martin (Eric Palmer), Melinda Enderton (Richard), Joey Martin, Amanda Martin, Joshua Martin (Amanda), Cody Withrow (Mackenzie) and Heidi Merrill (Anthony); her grandchildren, Emilia Palmer, Jayce, Caitelyn and Brynn Enderton, Bentley and Hunter Martin, Andrea Goehring and Adrian Quijas, Mavrik, Rylan and River Martin, Matthew Navarro and Oliver Christians, Miley and Caleb Withrow, and Jaiden and Jonathan Merrill; and her siblings and in-laws, Dena (Donnie) Smith and Charles (Karen) Buel. RaAnna is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Ray and Deanna Buel, Curtis Bruns and cousin Rodney Lemon.

Darrell Hutzell

Darrell Hutzell, 90, of Adel, died at home Dec. 30, 2024, with his sons, Kip and Benny, at his side. He was born June 28, 1934, to Benton B. Hutzell and Pauline Reynolds.  He grew up in Adel, where he went to school and worked at the courthouse with his Grandpa “DeeDee” Elmer Reynolds.  He went on to work at Riverside Implement as an International mechanic, then later at the Dallas County home also as a mechanic.
He was a diverse man with many talents, hobbies and likes including his beloved IH tractors, Chevy trucks, truck and tractor pulls, Corvairs and Harley Davidson bikes that he would ride across America.  He loved riding around town with his pets, of which he had many.  Dogs, pigeons, squirrels and even a toad were loved dearly by him.
Darrell took great pride in helping out others around town. Many would stop by his garage and pick his brain when they couldn’t figure out a problem with their machine.  He loved fishing, guns, live auctions and telling jokes and stories while sipping coffee with the town-folk. You could find Darrell shucking corn every year on Friday night before the Adel Sweet Corn Festival.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Doris and Lois.
Survivors include his sons, Kip, Benny and Dave (Jenny); his brothers, Dale (Velma) and Doyle (Carolyn); and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sister Joan Sheil

Sister Joan Sheil, CHM, 90, died Dec. 24, 2024, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. Services at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel were Dec. 28. Services at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport, were Dec. 30. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Margaret Joan Sheil was born July 28, 1934, in Des Moines and grew up in Mount Ayr. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary (CHM) in 1955 and professed vows in 1958 as Sister Michael Maureen.
Sister was a lifelong learner dedicated to libraries and scholarship. She had bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science. In addition to her formal degrees, she completed continuing education studies on numerous topics over the years.
Sr. Joan served Marycrest College/Marycrest-Teikyo University/Marycrest International University for 43 years, most recently as director of library services (1972-1999). Between 1991 and 1998, she had 19 committee appointments. She also enjoyed softball, tennis and camping. She taught numerous courses as well. After retiring from Marycrest, she served as a staff assistant at the Humility of Mary Center in Davenport for two years, and, from 2001-2017 served as archivist there. Since 2017, she exercised a ministry of prayer and witness at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center.
Unafraid of change, Sr. Joan was an advocate for embracing new technology, encouraging early adoption of computers in the Marycrest library and working among the first librarians to link their collections online in the Quad Cities area. She was a member of, and served in many capacities, for numerous professional organizations.
She published on the topics of incorporating media into higher education and research, provided in-service workshops on topics of libraries and media, served as a panelist for regional and national library and audiovisual meetings, and was an evaluator for high school libraries through the North Central Association evaluation team and for the BOOKLIST publication of the American Library Association.
Her service also included the CHM community, for which she served on multiple committees concerning governance and development, and in 2000 she chaired the Stewardship Committee.
Sister Joan is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her cousins, Michael (Diane) Sheil, Sandy Sheil, Denise (Paul) Cameron, Donna Sheil, Janice Sheil and the religious community she shared life with for 69 years.

Raymond ‘Ray’ Gold

Raymond “Ray” Gold, 78, of Johnston, died Dec. 22, 2024. He was born in Des Moines on July 4, 1946, to Clifford and Gladys (Berg) Gold. Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 29, at Iles Brandt Dallas Center Chapel. A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 30, at the same location. Burial followed at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
Ray graduated from Des Moines Public Schools in 1964 before earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. After completing his education, Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, a time that shaped his character and instilled a deep sense of responsibility and commitment. Ray married the love of his life, Irene, on March 11, 1978. The couple had two sons, Wade and Ryan.
Ray worked as a senior engineer at John Deere Des Moines Works, where he worked for nearly 30 years. After his retirement in 2006, Ray and Irene built their vacation dream home on Leech Lake, near Walker, Minnesota. They spent many happy hours together hosting family and friends, fishing, and taking grandchildren tubing.
Ray was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, and had a passion for construction and woodworking. Ray was also a lover of travel. Above all, Ray cherished spending time with those he loved, and his presence at family gatherings will be deeply missed.
Ray is survived by his wife, Irene; his sons, Wade and Ryan; his grandchildren, Carter, Henry, Sam, Ethan, Olivia, Harper, Maxwell and Nashton; his brother, Ronald (Kathryn) Gold; sisters-in-law, Diane (Ken) Van Wyk, Kathy (Dave) Wickett, Pam (Russ Howe) Jenkins, Joyce (Wayne) Beebout; brothers-in-law Mel (Shirley) Odegaard and Jeff (Dawn) Odegaard; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Gladys Gold; and his sister-in-law, Rose Gold.

Leland ‘Lee’ Paul Schweer

Leland “Lee” Paul Schweer, 92, of Johnston, died Dec. 19, 2024. A memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 27, at the Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Burial was at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.
Lee was born on Dec. 12, 1932, to Paul Jonathon and Elda Elnora (Lang) Schweer in Fort Madison. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1956. After his service, Lee finished his college education and moved to Des Moines to start his first job. He had a successful career in pharmaceutical sales, a profession he dedicated many years to before his retirement in 1990.
He married Sharon Doris Brummer on Jan. 26, 1963, and built a life filled with love and commitment until her passing in 1979. He was the proud father of Jamie and Kari, and a loving grandfather to Bennett and Avalon. In 2000, he built a home in Johnston and lived there until moving to Edencrest Assisted Living in Johnston in 2021.
Lee attended various churches in the Des Moines area throughout his adult life. His interests were varied, with a particular passion for collecting primitive antiques and exploring the New England states, in particular making many trips to the Boston area. Lee was also a true car enthusiast, always appreciating the craftsmanship and design of fine automobiles.
He is survived by his daughters, Jamie (Heike Werder) Schweer and Kari (John) Lang; and grandchildren Bennett and Avalon; as well as many beloved family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Dallas Lee Bowman

Dallas Lee Bowman, 86, of Adel, died Dec. 17, 2024. Dallas was born on July 25, 1938, in Audubon County. He graduated from Bagley High School in 1956 and soon after married Belva Renner in Jefferson on June 16, 1957. To this union, two daughters were born, Cindy and Teresa. Dallas was a lifelong farmer, always innovating new techniques and methods.
Dallas was a master pork producer, active in his community in the Jaycees, as Dallas County Soil Conservation District chairman, and as the school board president. He enjoyed participating in contour plow competitions and won many events at the local, state and national levels. He won the 1963 National Contour Plowing Championship, which allowed him to represent the USA in the 1964 World Plowing Competition in Austria. Dallas continued to be active with the Contour Plowing Association, organizing matches and serving as a judge at future matches. This included judging a world competition near the Amana Colonies in Iowa.
Dallas is survived by his wife, Belva; daughters, Cindy (Dean) Laughlin and Teresa (David) Groves; granddaughter, Olivia (Colin) Guthrie; and one great-grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elaine Betts and Lois Skinner.

She was born to Richard Dwain and Mildred Maxine (Keller) Franklin on Feb. 8, 1956, in Creston. Beginning at age 3, Monica lived in many places around the world with her parents, her sister, Lori, and her brother, Mike, as they traveled for Richard’s duties with the U.S. Navy. She graduated from Joseph P. Knapp High School in Currituck County, North Carolina, in 1974. She attended The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she, in 1977, earned her diploma as a registered nurse. It was during her time in nursing school that she received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.
Monica took her first nursing job at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, working as an OB nurse. She married Gary Patience on Sept. 9, 1978. They had two daughters, Denise and Holly, and two sons, Ryan and Stephen, while farming with Gary’s father, Herb, near Earlham. Monica chose to set aside her nursing career to homeschool her children. She became one of the early pioneers of the homeschooling movement in Iowa. She worked with Iowa lawmakers on legislation granting freedom to parents who desired to homeschool their children.
Monica resumed her nursing career in 2002 working as a nurse for Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for 20 years. Retiring in 2022, she devoted her time to traveling and gardening with Gary and spending time with children and grandchildren. For many years, she was actively involved with the Earlham Church of Christ where she taught and directed Vacation Bible School and J.A.M. (Jesus And Me). Later, with the Valley Evangelical Free Church in West Des Moines, she was actively involved with her life group and women’s Bible study groups.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Gary; children, Denise (Wallace) Greenlees, Holly Patience, Ryan (Brianan) Patience and Stephen (Flor) Patience; grandchildren, Jonathan, Violet, Autumn, Garrett, Rose, Angus, William, Summer, Elizabeth, Victoria, Julia and Cyrus Greenlees; Hunter, Wesson, Barrett, Kimber, Remi and Cali Patience; Lili Zuazua and Emma Patience; sister, Lori (Mitica) Cruceru; brother, Michael (Bernie) Franklin; son-in-law, Steve Nancarrow; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lindsay Ann Taylor

Lindsay Ann Taylor, 45, of Adel died Dec. 6, 2024, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. She courageously battled a progressive neurological disorder for more than a decade. 
Lindsay was born on March 18, 1979, in Creston, where she graduated as valedictorian and the most outstanding female athlete for the class of 1997. She still holds school records in track and basketball.
Lindsay received a doctorate of pharmacy degree from Drake University in May 2003, and, on May 31, married Mike Taylor in Creston. She bought her first pharmacy in August of that year.
Lindsay was honored as the “Rocky Finnie Entrepreneur of the Year” by Medicap Pharmacies, Inc., making her the youngest recipient in the award’s history. Although Lindsay was proud of her many achievements in life, nothing brought her more happiness than watching her three children grow up. She considered this her life’s greatest accomplishment. 
Lindsay is survived by her husband of 21 years, Mike Taylor, and their three children, Payton, Sawyer and Maddie; her parents, Ray and Bev Courtney of Adel; her maternal grandmother, Arlene Warner; her brother, Tyler Courtney (Carrie); brothers-in law Vince Taylor (Cindy) and Russ Taylor (Tracy); her sister-in-law, Barb Phillips (Todd); nieces; nephews; many cousins; aunts and uncles; and the loyal family labrador, Remi. 
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Terry and Sherry Taylor; paternal grandparents, Swede and Esther Courtney; maternal grandfather, Darwin Warner; aunt, Denise Wellensiek; and her beloved family labrador and “first child,” Lucky.
Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at New Hope Church, 25712 Highway 6, Adel. Pastor Gabe Parker, who both taught and coached Lindsay’s children at ADM Schools, will be the funeral service officiant. Donations in Lindsay’s honor may be directed to the ADM FFA Chapter, Adel Public Library, New Hope Church, or the UnityPoint Taylor Hospice House.
