Gregory Scott Miller

Gregory Scott Miller, 75, of Perry, died Feb. 16, 2025, at Dallas County Memorial Hospital in Perry. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 8, from 2-5 p.m. at La Poste, 1219 Warford St., Perry. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.caldwellparrish.com.
Born on Oct. 21, 1949, to Lee and Katherine (Foltz) Miller, Greg spent his life working various jobs including with the railroad and Lennox Industries. He had a deep passion for cars and all things racing, especially muscle cars and drag racing. In his youth, he was a golden glove boxer and a skilled pool player. He was an avid fan of wrestling and a devoted fan of Monday Night Raw. In his later years, he switched his Chicago Bears alliance to become a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed many adventures up north going to the dirt track races, boating or just having conversations on Joe and Nicki’s deck with family and friends.
His warm personality and infectious sense of humor made him the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with anyone. Whether sharing a joke, telling a story, or simply lending a listening ear, he had a way of making those around him feel valued and appreciated. Above all, Greg’s family brought him the greatest joy. He shared a deep bond with his son, Kelle, who was also his best friend. Later in life, he restored his relationship with his daughter, Nicole, and his eldest son, Josh. He took immense pride in all his children and treasured every moment with all his grandchildren.
Greg is survived by his three children: Josh Miller of New Orleans; Nicole (Joe) Till and their children, Olivia and Joey, of Hudson, Wisconsin; and Kelle (Emily) Miller and their daughter, Frances, of Madrid; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Katherine Miller; his son, Jamie Miller; and his brothers, Mike and Joe Miller.
Ohollearn

Charles O’Hollearn

Charles O’Hollearn, 85, died at home on Feb. 9, 2025. Charles was born Dec. 5, 1939, in Lawler. Following high school, Charles served honorably in the U.S. Army. A successful salesman and manager, Charles had a long career working at Jim Hawk Truck Trailers. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Joseph, Thomas and Daniel; grandchildren, Zachary, Bradley and Kayla; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kyler, Bella and Wrenley; his siblings, Janet, Robert, Brian and Mike; and his two little doggies, Dolly and Toby. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; brother, Don; and many former doggy friends.

Delbert countryman

Delbert “Duff” Lawrence Countryman

Delbert “Duff” Lawrence Countryman, 70, of Redfield died at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids on Feb. 4, 2025. He was born Dec. 25, 1974, in Iowa City. He grew up in Redfield and attended Dexfield Community Schools. Delbert married Deborah LeFleur in1974. They later divorced.
Delbert was a member of the Redfield Historical Society and volunteered at the Redfield Museum, sharing the history of Redfield with many who visited the museum and Old Settlers celebrations. “Duff” was also a genealogy buff. Delbert enjoyed fishing and playing his guitar in many “jam” sessions in the Redfield and Stuart areas.
He was a devoted father and an awesome grandfather, loving each and every quirk of his grandchildren and children. He used his stubbornness to guide his grandchildren to be better. Delbert served the military in the Air Force.He remained routine in meeting with his buddies, sharing drinks and playing darts.
Delbert is survived by his children, Lori (Jeremy) Kirk, Heather (Jason) Monaghan, Tammie (Todd) Venne, Sheila (Tiffany) Countryman, Robert Kirk and step-daughter Susan Fox; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Beverley (Gary) Rosenbeck; brothers, Raymond Countryman and David (Kara) Countryman. He was preceded in death by his parents, D. Wayne and Susie Countryman.
A celebration of life will be held from 2-4 p.m. on March 2 at the Redfield City Hall Community room

Kelly Gene Broyles

Kelly Gene Broyles, 67, of Adel, died Jan. 21, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was born on July 30, 1957, in Des Moines.
Kelly approached life with an adventurous spirit and found joy in the simple pleasures. He was an outdoor enthusiast who lived his life to the fullest. He was a proud father of four who found joy in sharing countless stories and cherished memories, watching the Kansas City Chiefs play, and watching his sons wrestle. Kelly treasured his high school years, forming lifelong friendships as a member of “The Denims.” He had a lifelong passion for classic cars, spending endless hours restoring and admiring vintage models. He enjoyed fishing and cribbage.
Kelly is survived by his four children, Buc Broyles (Emily Six), Sara Broyles (Chris Nichols), Carly Broyles (Jason Kajewski) and Wyatt Broyles (Emily Owen); four sisters, Chris Pierce, Denise Moses, Shelly Broyles and Bonnie Cummings (Ed Cummings); and 10 grandchildren.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Carol “Bill” and Dorothy Broyles; sister, Pam Broyles; and the mother of his children, Carla Williams.
A celebration of Kelly’s life was Feb. 1 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in Adel. Memorials may be made to the Kelly Broyles Memorial account at Raccoon Valley Bank. 
Janice daly

Janice Loe Jungmann Daly

Janice Loe Jungmann Daly died Feb. 6, 2025, at home and surrounded by her husband of 62 years and their four daughters and families. Jan was born in Des Moines Sept. 1, 1940, and grew up near Booneville. She was proud to be a Van Meter Bulldog and University of Iowa Hawkeye graduate, where she met the love of her life in the School of Dentistry while studying to be a dental hygienist. On May 25, 1963, they married and began their amazing life together.
Bill and Jan moved from West Des Moines to rural De Soto in 1971 to raise their four daughters on the farm. “Nanner” was the best at everything, raising and nurturing four daughters, eight grandchildren and two great grands. She created dance costumes, made sure the girls had piano lessons all while producing a bountiful garden every season and faithfully selecting and practicing the piano and organ selections for the weekly church services.  She served on the Adel De Soto School Board 12 years and was a founding member of the Adel DeSoto Scholarship Foundation Board. Recently she served on the Dallas County Compensation Board.
When Bill and Jan had time to get away from the homestead, they enjoyed square dancing with the Cee-Do-Cee Club in Dallas Center and playing couples bridge with a lively Adel bunch. She was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye (especially football) fan.  The couple enjoyed traveling — and most recently enjoyed their time in Florida where they spent every January.
She is preceded in death by by her parents, Elmer and Lyla Jungmann; her in-laws, W. D. and Evelyn Daly; brother, Conrad Jungmann; and grandson, York McKinley. She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Karla (Steve) Hocker, Kris (Tim) Boettger, Karin (Drew) Van Werden and Kendra Daly; grandchildren Daly Hardy, Reese Hardy, Ike (Katie) Boettger, Adrienne Boettger, Charles Van Werden, Gabe Van Werden, Dane Van Werden; great-grandchildren Clay and Kiley Boettger; siblings, Jim Jungmann, Ron (Donna) Jungmann and Judy (Steve) Saltzman; cousins; nieces; and nephews.

Daugherty  jackie

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Kay Daugherty

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Kay Daugherty, 73, of Adel, died Feb. 4, 2025. Funeral services were Feb. 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel. Interment was at the Panther Creek Cemetery in Adel. Jackie was born in Fort Dodge May 6, 1951. She went to college at Northwest Missouri State where she graduated with a degree in English.
Jackie married Tim Daugherty on May 26, 1973. Jackie worked at Younkers until becoming a mother when she shifted her focus to raising their two sons, Tony and Joe, and being a homemaker and wife. She and Tim enjoyed spending time with their four grandsons, enjoyed trips to the casino and cheering on the Chicago Cubs. The last family vacation Jackie took with Tim, Tony, Joe and their families was to see the Chicago Cubs play in 2016 when she finally got to see them win the World Series.
Jackie is survived by her sons, Tony (Vicki) Daugherty and Joe (Sarah) Daugherty; her four grandchildren, Evan, Blake “Tony”, Caleb and Andrew “Joe”; her siblings, Sandra (Dan) McComb, Judy (Tom) Smithson and Ed (Sherie) Zoss. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim Daugherty; and her parents, Leonard and Vivian Zoss.

Wayne gaedelman

Wayne Henry Geadelmann

Wayne Henry Geadelmann, 88, died at Spurgeon Senior Community, Dallas Center, on Feb. 1, 2025. He was born on a farm outside of Clarence on May 9, 1936. He graduated from Clarence High School and Iowa State University, where he majored in Ag Economics and was part of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).  He was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He had a long career with Brenton Bank, retiring as president from the Adel Branch. He married Martha Jean Meyer in July 7, 1962. He and friends founded Land Investors, Inc. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He also served the community through his work for the local Rotary chapter, Adel Developers, and the Chamber of Commerce. Wayne retired from Brenton Banks in March of 1993.
After his wife’s death, he traveled to Riga, Latvia, where he spent several months helping the country transition from communism to capitalism by assisting in developing their banking system. Back home he was instrumental in raising funds for Adel’s new public library building, which was finished in 2006.
In early 1995, Wayne married Ann Jacobson Jungmann.
He was an avid ISU football and men’s basketball fan, planted many trees, was physically active, and enjoyed time at his grandchildren’s activities and in Lander, Wyoming, where he had a “cabin” near Ann’s family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Merlin Geadelmann; his first wife, Martha Jean Meyer Geadelmann; and his son-in-law, Joe Austin. He is survived by his brother, Gene Geadelmann; his sister, Roseann (Terry) Schneider; his sister-in-law, Shirley Geadelmann; his wife, Ann Jungman; his daughter, Anne Austin; his sons Steve (Jill) Geadelmann and Scott (Lori) Geadelmann; his stepsons, Matt (Krystal) Jungmann and Jed (Julie) Jungmann; and his grandchildren, Henry Austin, Benjamin Geadelmann, Louisa Austin, Lander Geadelmann, William Geadelmann, Jackson Geadelmann, and Ann’s grandchildren, Jack, Luke, Kate and Audrey.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 14 from 3-5 p.m. at Caldwell-Parish Funeral Home in Adel. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at Adel United Methodist Church, 115 S. Tenth St. The service will be livestreamed at the Caldwell-Parish website. In lieu of flowers or plants, donations may be made to the Adel United Methodist Church or to the Adel Public Library.
Flint

Dayna Lynn Flint

Dayna Lynn Flint, 65, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation and rosary service were held Feb. 7 at Iles Westover Chapel. Funeral services were Feb. 8 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Additional services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Baue Funeral Home in Cave Springs, Missouri. Burial will follow at St. Charles Memorial Gardens.
Dayna was born Aug. 22, 1959, in St. Charles, Missouri, to Donald and Joyce (Monroe) Ohlms. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. She was a medical technologist at DePaul Hospital, where she met her future husband, Jerry Flint. When Jerry went to graduate school at the University of Kentucky, they married, and Dayna worked at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and supported the family. Once Jerry’s career began, the family moved to several places. Dayna concentrated her efforts on her family and volunteering. One of her most memorable experiences was living in Singapore where she organized her daughter’s education and supported the Singapore American School and Tabitha Foundation Cambodia.
When Dayna returned to the United States, she volunteered for several organizations, including PEO International, PTA as vice president of fundraising, Junior League Des Moines, Junior League St. Louis, Girl Scouts of America, and National Charity League. In her 40 years of volunteering, Dayna’s leadership helped raise more than $8 million.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and traveling with her family. She visited more than 30 countries and most of the United States.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Flint; daughter, Bayley Flint Johnson and her husband, Matthew; siblings Cheryl (Peter) Perkins and Todd (Erin) Ohlms; and nieces and nephew, Abby Perkins and Joseph and Grace Ohlms. Dayna was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions are suggested to P.E.O. International STAR Scholarship (JM-JY\IA Des Moines Chapter), the Chaminade Donald J. Ohlms “Red Devil” Memorial Scholarship, or the Iowa Health Care Association Foundation.

Azinger

Richard John “Dick” Azinger Sr.

Richard John “Dick” Azinger Sr., 87, died Jan. 28, 2025. He was born on Aug. 6, 1937,  in Keokuk and graduated high school in Montrose. He received multiple advance degrees from colleges and universities including St. Ambrose and the University of Iowa. He married Mary Ann Kearns on Aug. 11, 1962, in Keokuk. The couple lived in DeWitt for more than 50 years raising their five children. Dick spent his life dedicated to teaching, inspiring countless students throughout his career.
Dick’s love for family, reading, scrapbooking and gardening (vegetables and flowers) was evident to all who knew him. You could always see Dick and Mary Ann at one of the numerous sporting events of their children and grandchildren. Black glass was another passion of theirs, and they grew quite a collection. Dick also presented travel logs at the local movie house. Dick also loved doing calligraphy and making cutout artwork for special events.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lorretta; his siblings, Herman “Bud” and his wife, Pat, Tom, and William “Bill” and Donna. Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, their five children, Kevin (Connie), Kirk (Lisa), Rich (Janet), Todd (Stefanie) and Jennifer (Bob); his bother, Roy (Liz); 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A visitation and memorial service will be held on Feb. 8 at St. Boniface Church in Waukee starting at 9 a.m. There will be a light luncheon following the mass. Burial will be held at a later date in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Croix Hospice of West Des Moines.
Schutte

Jody Lynn Schutte

Jody Lynn Schutte, 57, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025. She was born Dec. 16, 1967, in Jefferson and spent her childhood on a farm outside of Redfield, where her favorite pastimes included camping with her family, vacationing with her best friend, and helping her dad on the farm.
Jody graduated from Dexfield High School in 1986 and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1992. With a compassionate heart and a love for people, Jody had a natural calling toward a nursing career that spanned more than 25 years.
She married her husband, Russ, on April 5, 1996. To this marriage, they welcomed Sidney Rae and made their home in Van Meter. As a family, they would vacation often to anywhere that had a nice beach, spend a lot of time at their lake home on Sun Valley Lake, and play a lot of cribbage with friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Sidney (Luke) Anderson; parents, Larry and Pam Godwin; granddaughters, Hensley and Murphy Anderson; sister, Teresa (Rick) Long; brother, Nyle (Tina) Godwin; nieces Kori (Mike) Danner, Bailey (Brandon) Pruitt and Hunter Godwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russ, and nephew, Christopher Long.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 3 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Morrisburg Cemetery in Stuart. Dennis Edward Sutherland

Dennis Edward Sutherland, 78, of Van Meter, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Van Meter American Legion Hall. A private family inurnment with military honors will be held on Monday, Feb. 10 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. Dennis was born on Nov. 6, 1946, in northwest Iowa. He graduated from Adel High School in 1964. Dennis took great pride in his military service, and the lessons he learned during those years remained with him for the rest of his life.
On Sept. 25, 1976, Dennis married Elaine Culbertson in Van Meter. Together, they built a beautiful life and a big, loving family.
A proud member of the Van Meter American Legion Post No. 403, Dennis dedicated much of his time to his fellow veterans. He was also a member of the Van Meter Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years. He worked as a machinist at John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1995, and later spent several years working in conservation.
He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and beekeeping. Dennis was also a gifted cook and canner and took great pride in his famous brisket. He enjoyed building and repairing anything he could, from smokers to birdhouses.
His family was his greatest joy. He was a devoted husband, father and “Papa,” who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Sutherland; children, Christy (Mark) Vesey, Kimberley (Marvin) Firch, Sean (Kathy) Culbertson and Scott (Cindi) Culbertson; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sandy (Jim) Garoutte, Deani (Jeff) Montang, Ronnie (Kristi) Sutherland, Joani (Floyd) Groves and Carol (Bill) Barrow; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Lois Sutherland, and his brother, Roger Sutherland.
Mangione

Geraldine “Gerry” Helen Mangione

Geraldine “Gerry” Helen Mangione, 84, died Jan. 23, 2025, in Des Moines. A visitation and memorial mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on March 22. Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m., and mass will begin at 11:30 a.m. Private burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.
Gerry was born on Feb. 10, 1940, to Louis and Helen (Szyska) Dusik in Chicago, Illinois. She attended all Catholic schools until graduating with a food and nutrition degree from Mundelein College, which has since been incorporated into Loyola University Chicago. Before her retirement in 2002, Gerry worked as the vice president of sales for Classic Coffee Service for 17 years.
She married Salvatore Mangione on Jan. 19, 1963, at Five Holy Martyrs Church in Chicago. Together they raised two children, David and Lisa, in Downers Grove, Illinois.
She was the heart of her family and always had an open door for her loved ones. It brought her immense joy to host countless family events and prepare meals that made every occasion feel special. She also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She was a member of the National Audubon Society.
Gerry is survived by her husband, Sal; son, David Mangione; daughter, Lisa (Alan) Vontalge, of Johnston; grandchildren, Adam Mangione, Kara Mangione, Ella Mangione, Emma (Sean) Grogan and Hunter (Rachel) Vontalge; brother, Richard (Barbara) Dusik; and various other beloved friends and family members. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; or to the family to plant a tree at Adventure Ridge Park, which was behind Gerry and Sal’s home in Johnston.

Kimberly Sue Dalton

Kimberly Sue Dalton, 65, Adel, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Kim was born June 24, 1959, in Des Moines to David Carroll and Phylis Jean (Elliott) Keasey. After her schooling, she worked and raised two daughters, Angi and Traci. She later had a son, Freddie Dalton, III.
In March of 1979, Kim was in a car accident that left her paralyzed; however, that did not take away her fight, courage and bravery to continue on. Kim loved the river, fishing, camping, being on a boat, her family and spending time with grandkids, great grandkids and Punky, her beloved cat.
Preceding her in death were her parents, son, and longtime partner, Andrew “AJ” James. Survivors include daughters, Angi Ostrem and Traci Vargas; brother, David Randall (Laura) Keasey; a host of grandkids; four great grandkids; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at Iles Brandt Chapel, 1301 Ash St., Dallas Center. Interment at Brethren Cemetery will take place the summer of 2025. Kim will be laid to rest next to AJ and Freddie Dalton, III.
Rita windust

Rita L. Windust

Rita L. Windust, 74, died Jan. 11, 2025. She was born on Feb. 5, 1950, to Charles “Nonie” and Nellie (Harmon) Bowles. Rita was raised in Adel and graduated from Adel High School. She briefly resided in Berlin, Germany, where her high school love was stationed with the military. She married Art Keller in 1971. Rita gained two stepsons, Kevin and Ken, from the union. The couple spent many years fostering children and were happy to fold Lynnette into their family. They later had two children, Lane and Amber. Rita ran an in-home daycare for several years.
Rita became widowed in 1992 and began working outside the home in various administrative positions. She married James “Jim” Windust in 1996. She retired from the National Pork Board as a mailroom and administrative assistant in 2018 and was delighted to be back home again taking care of Jim, her cherished pups, and also helping care for her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to the casino, spending time with her siblings, visiting Branson and watching game shows. She shared her cooking and crocheted blankets.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of nearly 29 years; her beloved dog, Katie; children, Kevin (Kim) Keller, Ken (Toni) Keller, Lynnette Ryan, Lane (Carie) Keller, Amber (Cody) Dakan; grandchildren, Kelsey (Michael) Pieken, Anastacia Keller, KC Keller, Caiden and Paige Keller, and Ella, Caleb and Delaney Dakan; siblings, Andy Bowles, Fern Stucker and Louise Mague; as well as many other extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband, Art Keller; and siblings and siblings-in-law, Frances Bowles (infant), Florence (Robert) Stucker, Benny Stucker, Charles (Joan) Bowles, Bonnie Bowles, John Mague and Patricia Spoerry.
Visitation is Thursday, Jan. 15, 5-7 p.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. Funeral service is there Friday, Jan. 17, 10-11 a.m. No graveside service will be performed.
Steve blair

Steve Blair

Steve Blair, 72, of Adel, died Jan. 7, 2025, at his home. Steve was born on June 22, 1952, in Des Moines to Paul Junior and Katherine Mae (Duncan) Blair. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1971. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. On Nov, 28, 2003, Steve married Ollie Mae Smith at Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines. For many years, Steve owned his own business fixing alternators and starters. He later worked for the natural gas companies in Texas as a compressor mechanic.
Steve enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, camping, anything he could fix or tinker with, firearms, finding new hobbies and new business ventures, cutting the sleeves off his shirts and writing offensive comments on Facebook. Steve had a rough and stubborn exterior, but, past that, was a softness in his heart that was full of love for his family.
Steve is survived by his wife of 21 years, Ollie; children, Steve (Kristi) Blair, Lori (Robert) Lucas and John Blair; step-children, Esteban Leal and Amanda Blair; brothers, Robert (Mary) Blair and J. Martin (Debra) Blair; along with a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Tomas Blair.
Funeral services were Jan. 14 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. Burial followed in the Highland Cemetery in Mystic. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future designation. Online condolences may be expressed at www.caldwellparrish.com.

RaAnna Kay Withrow of Perry was born in Des Moines to Billy Ray and Deanna Mae Buel on Nov. 11, 1959. She died Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 65. RaAnna lived her entire childhood in Van Meter, where she met her best friend, Janet Dayton. This friendship stood the test of time. She graduated from Van Meter High School in 1978, receiving not only her diploma but an award for perfect attendance. Later in life, she developed a lasting friendship with Vickie Riemer.
After high school, RaAnna joined the workforce and met her first husband, Dallas Martin. Five children were born to this union. She would later meet and marry her second husband, Lawrence. To this union, two more children were born.
She was in a bowling league during her young adulthood. She was a talker and met no stranger. RaAnna enjoyed taking her children fishing, on camping trips and being involved in their lives. She loved hosting holiday parties that often resulted in card and board games. Like her parents, she also had a love for Elvis Presley. There was one annual event RaAnna never missed — The Iowa State Fair. She was a great woman, wife, sister, mother and grandma with a kind, gentle soul and generous heart.
RaAnna is survived by her husband, Lawrence Withrow; her children, Suezanne Martin (Eric Palmer), Melinda Enderton (Richard), Joey Martin, Amanda Martin, Joshua Martin (Amanda), Cody Withrow (Mackenzie) and Heidi Merrill (Anthony); her grandchildren, Emilia Palmer, Jayce, Caitelyn and Brynn Enderton, Bentley and Hunter Martin, Andrea Goehring and Adrian Quijas, Mavrik, Rylan and River Martin, Matthew Navarro and Oliver Christians, Miley and Caleb Withrow, and Jaiden and Jonathan Merrill; and her siblings and in-laws, Dena (Donnie) Smith and Charles (Karen) Buel. RaAnna is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Ray and Deanna Buel, Curtis Bruns and cousin Rodney Lemon.

Darrell Hutzell

Darrell Hutzell, 90, of Adel, died at home Dec. 30, 2024, with his sons, Kip and Benny, at his side. He was born June 28, 1934, to Benton B. Hutzell and Pauline Reynolds.  He grew up in Adel, where he went to school and worked at the courthouse with his Grandpa “DeeDee” Elmer Reynolds.  He went on to work at Riverside Implement as an International mechanic, then later at the Dallas County home also as a mechanic.
He was a diverse man with many talents, hobbies and likes including his beloved IH tractors, Chevy trucks, truck and tractor pulls, Corvairs and Harley Davidson bikes that he would ride across America.  He loved riding around town with his pets, of which he had many.  Dogs, pigeons, squirrels and even a toad were loved dearly by him.
Darrell took great pride in helping out others around town. Many would stop by his garage and pick his brain when they couldn’t figure out a problem with their machine.  He loved fishing, guns, live auctions and telling jokes and stories while sipping coffee with the town-folk. You could find Darrell shucking corn every year on Friday night before the Adel Sweet Corn Festival.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Doris and Lois.
Survivors include his sons, Kip, Benny and Dave (Jenny); his brothers, Dale (Velma) and Doyle (Carolyn); and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sister Joan Sheil

Sister Joan Sheil, CHM, 90, died Dec. 24, 2024, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. Services at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel were Dec. 28. Services at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport, were Dec. 30. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Margaret Joan Sheil was born July 28, 1934, in Des Moines and grew up in Mount Ayr. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary (CHM) in 1955 and professed vows in 1958 as Sister Michael Maureen.
Sister was a lifelong learner dedicated to libraries and scholarship. She had bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science. In addition to her formal degrees, she completed continuing education studies on numerous topics over the years.
Sr. Joan served Marycrest College/Marycrest-Teikyo University/Marycrest International University for 43 years, most recently as director of library services (1972-1999). Between 1991 and 1998, she had 19 committee appointments. She also enjoyed softball, tennis and camping. She taught numerous courses as well. After retiring from Marycrest, she served as a staff assistant at the Humility of Mary Center in Davenport for two years, and, from 2001-2017 served as archivist there. Since 2017, she exercised a ministry of prayer and witness at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center.
Unafraid of change, Sr. Joan was an advocate for embracing new technology, encouraging early adoption of computers in the Marycrest library and working among the first librarians to link their collections online in the Quad Cities area. She was a member of, and served in many capacities, for numerous professional organizations.
She published on the topics of incorporating media into higher education and research, provided in-service workshops on topics of libraries and media, served as a panelist for regional and national library and audiovisual meetings, and was an evaluator for high school libraries through the North Central Association evaluation team and for the BOOKLIST publication of the American Library Association.
Her service also included the CHM community, for which she served on multiple committees concerning governance and development, and in 2000 she chaired the Stewardship Committee.
Sister Joan is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her cousins, Michael (Diane) Sheil, Sandy Sheil, Denise (Paul) Cameron, Donna Sheil, Janice Sheil and the religious community she shared life with for 69 years.

Raymond ‘Ray’ Gold

Raymond “Ray” Gold, 78, of Johnston, died Dec. 22, 2024. He was born in Des Moines on July 4, 1946, to Clifford and Gladys (Berg) Gold. Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 29, at Iles Brandt Dallas Center Chapel. A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 30, at the same location. Burial followed at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
Ray graduated from Des Moines Public Schools in 1964 before earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. After completing his education, Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, a time that shaped his character and instilled a deep sense of responsibility and commitment. Ray married the love of his life, Irene, on March 11, 1978. The couple had two sons, Wade and Ryan.
Ray worked as a senior engineer at John Deere Des Moines Works, where he worked for nearly 30 years. After his retirement in 2006, Ray and Irene built their vacation dream home on Leech Lake, near Walker, Minnesota. They spent many happy hours together hosting family and friends, fishing, and taking grandchildren tubing.
Ray was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, and had a passion for construction and woodworking. Ray was also a lover of travel. Above all, Ray cherished spending time with those he loved, and his presence at family gatherings will be deeply missed.
Ray is survived by his wife, Irene; his sons, Wade and Ryan; his grandchildren, Carter, Henry, Sam, Ethan, Olivia, Harper, Maxwell and Nashton; his brother, Ronald (Kathryn) Gold; sisters-in-law, Diane (Ken) Van Wyk, Kathy (Dave) Wickett, Pam (Russ Howe) Jenkins, Joyce (Wayne) Beebout; brothers-in-law Mel (Shirley) Odegaard and Jeff (Dawn) Odegaard; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Gladys Gold; and his sister-in-law, Rose Gold.

Leland ‘Lee’ Paul Schweer

Leland “Lee” Paul Schweer, 92, of Johnston, died Dec. 19, 2024. A memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 27, at the Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Burial was at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.
Lee was born on Dec. 12, 1932, to Paul Jonathon and Elda Elnora (Lang) Schweer in Fort Madison. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1956. After his service, Lee finished his college education and moved to Des Moines to start his first job. He had a successful career in pharmaceutical sales, a profession he dedicated many years to before his retirement in 1990.
He married Sharon Doris Brummer on Jan. 26, 1963, and built a life filled with love and commitment until her passing in 1979. He was the proud father of Jamie and Kari, and a loving grandfather to Bennett and Avalon. In 2000, he built a home in Johnston and lived there until moving to Edencrest Assisted Living in Johnston in 2021.
Lee attended various churches in the Des Moines area throughout his adult life. His interests were varied, with a particular passion for collecting primitive antiques and exploring the New England states, in particular making many trips to the Boston area. Lee was also a true car enthusiast, always appreciating the craftsmanship and design of fine automobiles.
He is survived by his daughters, Jamie (Heike Werder) Schweer and Kari (John) Lang; and grandchildren Bennett and Avalon; as well as many beloved family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Dallas Lee Bowman

Dallas Lee Bowman, 86, of Adel, died Dec. 17, 2024. Dallas was born on July 25, 1938, in Audubon County. He graduated from Bagley High School in 1956 and soon after married Belva Renner in Jefferson on June 16, 1957. To this union, two daughters were born, Cindy and Teresa. Dallas was a lifelong farmer, always innovating new techniques and methods.
Dallas was a master pork producer, active in his community in the Jaycees, as Dallas County Soil Conservation District chairman, and as the school board president. He enjoyed participating in contour plow competitions and won many events at the local, state and national levels. He won the 1963 National Contour Plowing Championship, which allowed him to represent the USA in the 1964 World Plowing Competition in Austria. Dallas continued to be active with the Contour Plowing Association, organizing matches and serving as a judge at future matches. This included judging a world competition near the Amana Colonies in Iowa.
Dallas is survived by his wife, Belva; daughters, Cindy (Dean) Laughlin and Teresa (David) Groves; granddaughter, Olivia (Colin) Guthrie; and one great-grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elaine Betts and Lois Skinner.

Monica Lou (Franklin) Patience

Monica Lou (Franklin) Patience died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024. Visitation was Dec. 26 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. She was born to Richard Dwain and Mildred Maxine (Keller) Franklin on Feb. 8, 1956, in Creston. Beginning at age 3, Monica lived in many places around the world with her parents, her sister, Lori, and her brother, Mike, as they traveled for Richard’s duties with the U.S. Navy. She graduated from Joseph P. Knapp High School in Currituck County, North Carolina, in 1974. She attended The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she, in 1977, earned her diploma as a registered nurse. It was during her time in nursing school that she received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.
Monica took her first nursing job at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, working as an OB nurse. She married Gary Patience on Sept. 9, 1978. They had two daughters, Denise and Holly, and two sons, Ryan and Stephen, while farming with Gary’s father, Herb, near Earlham. Monica chose to set aside her nursing career to homeschool her children. She became one of the early pioneers of the homeschooling movement in Iowa. She worked with Iowa lawmakers on legislation granting freedom to parents who desired to homeschool their children.
Monica resumed her nursing career in 2002 working as a nurse for Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for 20 years. Retiring in 2022, she devoted her time to traveling and gardening with Gary and spending time with children and grandchildren. For many years, she was actively involved with the Earlham Church of Christ where she taught and directed Vacation Bible School and J.A.M. (Jesus And Me). Later, with the Valley Evangelical Free Church in West Des Moines, she was actively involved with her life group and women’s Bible study groups.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Gary; children, Denise (Wallace) Greenlees, Holly Patience, Ryan (Brianan) Patience and Stephen (Flor) Patience; grandchildren, Jonathan, Violet, Autumn, Garrett, Rose, Angus, William, Summer, Elizabeth, Victoria, Julia and Cyrus Greenlees; Hunter, Wesson, Barrett, Kimber, Remi and Cali Patience; Lili Zuazua and Emma Patience; sister, Lori (Mitica) Cruceru; brother, Michael (Bernie) Franklin; son-in-law, Steve Nancarrow; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lindsay Ann Taylor

Lindsay Ann Taylor, 45, of Adel died Dec. 6, 2024, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. She courageously battled a progressive neurological disorder for more than a decade. 
Lindsay was born on March 18, 1979, in Creston, where she graduated as valedictorian and the most outstanding female athlete for the class of 1997. She still holds school records in track and basketball.
Lindsay received a doctorate of pharmacy degree from Drake University in May 2003, and, on May 31, married Mike Taylor in Creston. She bought her first pharmacy in August of that year.
Lindsay was honored as the “Rocky Finnie Entrepreneur of the Year” by Medicap Pharmacies, Inc., making her the youngest recipient in the award’s history. Although Lindsay was proud of her many achievements in life, nothing brought her more happiness than watching her three children grow up. She considered this her life’s greatest accomplishment. 
Lindsay is survived by her husband of 21 years, Mike Taylor, and their three children, Payton, Sawyer and Maddie; her parents, Ray and Bev Courtney of Adel; her maternal grandmother, Arlene Warner; her brother, Tyler Courtney (Carrie); brothers-in law Vince Taylor (Cindy) and Russ Taylor (Tracy); her sister-in-law, Barb Phillips (Todd); nieces; nephews; many cousins; aunts and uncles; and the loyal family labrador, Remi. 
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Terry and Sherry Taylor; paternal grandparents, Swede and Esther Courtney; maternal grandfather, Darwin Warner; aunt, Denise Wellensiek; and her beloved family labrador and “first child,” Lucky.
Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at New Hope Church, 25712 Highway 6, Adel. Doris ‘Bonnie’ LaVonne Hansen

Doris “Bonnie” LaVonne Hansen, 91, of Waukee, died Nov. 29, 2024. Born on Sept. 28, 1933, in Audubon, she was the youngest child of Wilson S. and Archena “Ena” Shaw Davis. She graduated valedictorian of Gray High School in 1951 and as a First Team All-County player on her 6-on-6 basketball team. Bonnie earned her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa and furthered her studies at Drake University. She taught in the Altoona and Saydel school districts. On Valentine’s Day in 1955, Bonnie married Palmer Hansen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
They lived for more than 50 years at Saylorville before relocating to Waukee. They shared a passion for travel, visiting all 50 states and countless National Parks, and enjoyed spending time at their Las Vegas vacation home.
Bonnie enjoyed playing cards and Wii bowling, She and her sister, Mary, enjoyed going to the movies together. Bonnie will be remembered for her warm spirit, her unwavering devotion to education, and the boundless love.
She is survived by her children, Sandra Laust, Ted (Marie) Hansen and Amy (Robert) Taylor; her grandchildren, Amanda (Robert) Anderson, Erica Turner (Michael Wahlert), Hope Taylor, Olivia Taylor, Rachel Taylor, Nick (Keyli) Keifer, Valerie (Mike) Sutton and Austin (Michaela) Wolfe; and her great-grandchildren, State and Collins Turner, Paisley, Hoyt, Krue and Brek Sutton, Emerson Wolfe and Makena Keifer.

Harry sandstrom

Harry Norman Sandstrom

Harry Norman Sandstrom was the first born to Naomi Judith Anderson Sandstrom and Harry Martin Sandstrom in Bristol, South Dakota, on Jan. 26, 1944. Harry grew up on a farm near Waubay, South Dakota. After graduating salutatorian from Waubay High School, Harry attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and received a political science degree. There he met his forever love, Kathy Hall. In 1966, they married in Iowa City, where Harry earned a master’s degree in political science from the University of Iowa.
Harry entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and Vietnam. Following his tour in Vietnam, the family moved back to Vermillion, where he attended law school at the University of South Dakota. He served a year after law school as Judge Nichol’s clerk in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before joining the private practice Bantz and Gosch in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1978, the family moved to Des Moines for Kathy’s job as a pole climbing instructor for the telephone company. Harry joined the legal department at Dial Finance Co., which, after a series of mergers, became Wells Fargo. He retired in 1999.
A lifelong Lutheran and devoted Democrat, Harry lived a fulfilling retirement with a great mix of purpose and fun. He loved reading, biking, cooking, eating and traveling. Throughout his life, he maintained close ties with his family and friends. By far the most important person in his life was his wife, life partner, and best friend, Kathy.
Harry courageously faced health problems during his last eight years. He rehabilitated after a massive stroke. He also battled chronic back pain, arthritis and sciatica. A fall in mid-October required brain surgery. Harry fought to recover, but eventually found peace and comfort at Kavanaugh Hospice House.
Harry is survived by his wife, Kathy Sandstrom; daughters, Jill Sandstrom Almgren (John) and Kristin Sandstrom Markert (Paul); grandchildren, Kate, Inga and Eden Almgren and Reina and Graham Markert; siblings, John and Carol; and many other family members and friends.
Harry’s life will be celebrated with a service at Hope+Elim in Des Moines on Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be for one hour prior to service. Lunch will follow the service. Interment will be held Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hope+Elim Church. Arrangements are by Iles Westover Chapel.

Jordan Christopher Wheeler

Jordan Christopher Wheeler, 36, of New York City, New Yor,, formerly of Urbandale, died Nov. 13, 2024, at his home in New York City.  
A talented stylist with a special gift for color, he started his career in Des Moines before moving to Boston and ultimately New York City. Jordan most recently worked as a real estate agent for Oxford Property Group in New York City. With a gentle, kind and generous soul, he had a unique way of making life brighter. His spirit was full of plans and dreams before the demons of depression and addiction took them away. He enjoyed baking, working out and adventure. Jordan’s life was a beautiful reminder to cherish the small things, to find joy in the everyday, and to always be kind.
Jordan is survived by “the love of his life,” Brad; parents, Doris and Jeff of Adel and Kenneth Wheeler of Sarasota, Florida; two sisters, Stephanie (Steve Spezzano) Eich of Boston and Sara (Jason) Stevens of Adel; one sister-in-law, Jeni Eich of West Des Moines; two nieces, Madelyn Stevens and Morgan Stevens; four nephews, Steven Eich, USMC Corporal Parker (Elizabeth) Eich, Hayden Eich and Max Stevens; and one great niece, Frankie Eich. He was beloved by many. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Eich, and grandparents.
A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the church with Father Chinna Devaraj officiating. John Plymesser

John Plymesser, 76, of Waukee (formerly of Adel), died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. John was born on March 8, 1948, to Dale and Cora (Roberts) Plymesser in Dexter. He graduated from Adel High School with the class of 1966. He grew up a farm boy and learned the value of hard work. Following high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970. His courageous service was awarded with a Purple Heart.
After John’s service in the Army, he married Jean Wicks on Nov. 26, 1971, at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren. Although Jean and John never had any children, they gave a loving home to many dogs over the years, his most special being Katie, a little rat terrier. John worked doing auto body repair for quite a few years after his military service. Later in life, he worked for Dallas County Secondary Roads, eventually becoming the superintendent of the department.
John enjoyed the great outdoors. He took many hunting and fishing trips with friends. Jean and John liked to travel and took many wonderful motorcycle trips over the years.
John is survived by his wife, Jean; brother, Gale (Virginia) Plymesser; sisters, Connie Glenn, Nancy Stringer, LuAnn Plymesser, Mary Irwin and Stella Fister; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family. John was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Cora Plymesser.

Cora Catherine Norris

Cora Catherine Norris, 102, died Nov. 13, 2024, in Johnston. She was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Estherville to Joseph and Cora Catherine (Lawson) Costello. After graduating high school, Cora joined the military during World War II. She was in the W.A.S.P. (Women’s Air Service Patrol). She and other women would fly newly made airplanes for the military to military base destinations all over the United States.
Cora worked as an editor for Meredith Publishing Company for more than 50 years. She enjoyed playing golf and flying rented open cockpit planes and taking her daughter, Cathy, all over the Des Moines area and Iowa. She loved animals, especially horses, and attending the horse shows Cathy competed in. Later, she volunteered at Mercy Hospital Gift Shop.
Cora is survived by her daughter, Cathy (Robert) Mills, and cousins, Peggy Kenoyer and Sandy Raney. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Cora Costello.

Joy Marie Parry

Joy Marie Parry, 65, died Nov. 7, 2024, in Johnston. She was born on Oct. 25, 1959. Joy grew up in Pocahontas and later pursued her passion for healthcare at the Mercy Medical School of Radiology. For more than 33 years, she worked as a radiation oncology dosimetrist at the John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines.
Known for her loving, caring and fun personality, Joy was always up for a good time. Whether it was a dance party in the kitchen or a bags tournament in the backyard, she always wanted to have fun with the ones she loved. Her hobbies included camping, biking, creating stained glass pieces and watercolor paintings. Joy was a lifelong biker and did RAGBRAI for more than 20 years.
She is survived by husband, Don Parry; son, Ben Parry and his wife, Sarah, along with their children, Clavey and Josiah; daughter, Lindsay Wilson and her children, Winter and River; sisters, Jill Lawler, Jane Happe and Judy Chavez; and brother, Jack Fischer. Joy was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Mary Jane Fischer, and nephews, Travis Fischer and Ryan Chavez.
A celebration of life will be held on Nov. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Johnston Lions Club.

Wilma Luther

Wilma Luther, 77, died Nov. 5, 2024. She was born June 11, 1947, to Amos and Virginia Hallsted. At 6 years of age, Wilma’s mother passed away, leaving her in the care of her maternal grandparents, George and Gordia Luther. She took on the last name of Luther after her father moved away. Wilma was brought up in Rippey. After the passing of her grandmother in 1967, Wilma, who had special needs, was placed in Glenwood State Hospital. During this time, Wilma participated in Special Olympics, and she often placed in State Special Olympic competitions. She was very proud of her accomplishments and she reminisced fondly of those days.
She enjoyed working in the community and spoke of various jobs at McDonalds, Goodwill, and Brickstreet Café & Bakery. Wilma retired from Brickstreet Bakery in 2014 and was honored with a community reception. Wilma came to Advantages In Life in 2013. She enjoyed celebrating her birthday with many friends who have loved her throughout her life. Wilma’s most cherished belongings were her collection of penguins, and she had a name for each one.
Wilma was preceded in death by parents, grandparents, and special cousin, John Luther, and a host of many family and friends. Robert Bushnell

Robert Bushnell, 96, died at Adel Acres Oct. 23. He was born in Des Moines in 1928, attended North High School, and graduated from Messiah Academy in Grantham, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Lou Sheridan, and, soon after, moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he spent 14 years nurturing his family. He followed the call of God into the ministry and spent the rest of his working years as a lay minister for the Brethren in Christ Church.
They retired to Wichita, Kansas. Robert was energized by the call of God on his life and was devoted to his loving family and friends. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether on mission trips to Latvia and Mexico or in homes that might need his carpentry skills. He was known for his strong baritone voice which he used mostly to praise his Savior, and for his quick wit which brought levity to almost every conversation.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Ken) Hykes of Adel; Mary Ellen Robey and David (Sonya) Bushnell; 10 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and two infant children.

Sister Rachel Beeson

Sister Rachel Beeson, CHM, 92, died Oct. 22, 2024, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Services were Oct. 24 at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel and Oct. 25 at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport. Interment was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Sr. Rachel served as a teacher and principal in Catholic and public schools for 38 years, beginning in 1953 in Cosgrove. Locally, she taught at St. Pius X. Sr. Rachel was an avid jigsaw puzzle worker and helped to make the community room a place of gathering and sharing stories. When she moved to Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, she continued this hobby, often joined by her brother, Msgr. Lawrence Beeson.
Sr. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Everett and Robert, and infant sister Harriett Beeson. She is survived by brothers, Justin Beeson and Msgr. Lawrence Beeson, and sister, Rachel Norton, numerous nieces and nephews and her CHM community.

Darlene B. Pitsenbarger, 100, of Adel, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Visitation was Oct. 24 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. Interment will be at the East Linn Cemetery in Redfield. Darlene was born April 6, 1924, in Waukee. She graduated first in her class of 26 at Waukee Community Schools. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) to become an elementary school teacher in Redfield for more than 20 years. She received her bachelor’s of education degree from Drake University in 1963.
She was married to Harold Dean Pitsenbarger for 58 years prior to his death on July 5, 2004. They raised two children, John LeRoy Pitsenbarger and Kay Ellen Vanags. Darlene continued to farm with her faithful business partner, Jim Thome, until her death. She took great pride in still having a garden and living on her farm. She lived to see the fruits of this year’s bountiful harvest.
Darlene, who hosted all the family’s holidays, enjoyed having her two children, their children and their children’s children gather at the farm. Her grandchildren are Stacey Pitsenbarger, Justin Pitsenbarger, Amanda Doherty, Christina Sheridan, Melinda Vanags and Elizabeth Jones, and her great-grandchildren are Jamien Williams, Jr.,  Xandria Berger, Ronnie Berger III, Andrew Millang, Riley Pitsenbarger, RaeLynn Pitsenbarger, Tyra Doherty (deceased), Justice Huff, Jasmine Doherty, Anthony and Rebecca Pitsenbarger. Darlene continued to welcome additional family members, Todd Sheridan, Micheal Jones, Deena Pitsenbarger and Jarrett Huff to her life. Nieces and nephews from afar helped round out her life and brought her much joy. Jim and Bobbi Thome, Jack and Carol Nelson, Cathy Clark, and Linda Miller helped her have a full life with stimulating and enjoyable conversation.

Dawn M. Kinzie, 44, died Oct. 10, 2024, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born Oct. 24, 1979, in Story City at Mary Greeley Medical Center. She is the daughter of Michael Knode and Jeri Maxwell. She graduated from Perry High School in 1998 and married Brad Kinzie on June 10, 2000. Dawn graduated from Des Moines Area Community College as an LPN in 2004 and worked at Adel Acres. Due to Dawn’s medical issues, she stopped working as a nurse in 2022. She enjoyed watching movies, spending time with her family and going on motorcycle rides with her husband. She was kindhearted, intelligent, loyal and, most importantly, loving to everyone.
Dawn was predeceased by her parents and grandparents. She is survived by her husband, Brad Kinzie; two children, Hunter and Taya Kinzie and Beverly and Chris Keifer; grandson Hudson Keifer and granddaughter-to-be; siblings, Tracy and Jesse Walker, Andrew Knode, Whitney and Drew Denmon, and Micaela and Jake Krause; step-mother, Lisa Knode; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mildred Jensen, 94, of Waukee died Aug. 28, 2024, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A visitation and time of sharing were held Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel.
Mildred Mae Jensen was born May 18, 1930, in rural Albia. She graduated from Albia High School and married John Jensen on Feb. 10, 1950. Mildred spent much of her time raising her children, volunteering at her local church and enjoying morning coffee at the local gas station. She also worked and retired from Farm Bureau in Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and grandson, Jesse Deardorff. Mildred is survived by her children, Julie Carroll and Randy (Debbie) Jensen; sister, Barbara Kaldenberg Bettis; grandchildren, Jesse’s wife Sheilah Oltmans-Deardorff, Jennifer (Ian) Carle, Jessica (Russell) Downey and Courtney (Alex) Thomas; great-grandchildren, Cline Downey, Olivia Downey, Claire Deardorff and Owen Deardorff.

Scott Cadwell

Scott Cadwell, 92, of Earlham, died Sept. 2, 2024, at his home. Alfred Scott Cadwell was born at home in Adel on April 2, 1932. He graduated from Adel High School in 1951 and served in the United States Army. He married Lucille Garnett on May 25, 1957, in Scranton. Scott worked for the Department of Transportation for 36 years as a heavy equipment operator. He was a longtime member of the Des Moines Rifle and Revolver Club and an avid gun enthusiast and collector. He was a master marksman. He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling and vacationing with family and friends. He attended church up until his health prevented it.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Garnett Cadwell; daughters, Kathy (Mike) Land and Linda (Steve) Michal; grandchildren, Mary Land, Rebecca Land, Sarah Land, Brock (Tina) Michal, Ben Michal and Daniel (Clara) Michal; and great grandchildren, Sutton Michal and Sage Michal.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Cadwell.
A funeral service was held Sept. 6 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. Burial followed at the Stump Thornton Barto Cemetery, Dallas County. Merry Faye Alliss

Merry Faye Alliss, 77, died at Bickford of Urbandale on Sept. 2, 2024. Funeral services were held at the Adel United Methodist Church on Sept. 12. Burial was planned at the Franklin Township cemetery, Cooper.
Merry was born in Jefferson on Sept. 2, 1947, to Don and Vida Thorpe. She attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1965. She married Donald Alliss on Aug. 13, 1967, and they celebrated 57 years together making homes in Des Moines, Adel, Palm Bay, Florida, and finally in Windsor Heights. Merry liked to decorate and remodel, garden and shop for antiques. She was a great cook, and family dinners won’t be the same without her deviled eggs and potato salad.
Merry is survived by her husband of 57 years, Don Alliss; sons, Vincent (Adriana) and Justin (Rachel); grandchildren, Abner, Ali, Kady, Keira, Lexi, Jasper and Libby; sister, Connie Pegg;  brothers, Tom (Dorothy) Thorpe and Fred (Tonya) Thorpe; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws; brother-in-law, Ed Pegg; niece, Carrie Thorpe; and nephew, Derrek Thorpe.

Richard D Duff

Richard “Dick” Duff, 87, of Adel, died Oct. 10, 2024. He was born to Harley and Edna Duff in Stuart on July 17, 1937. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1956 and enlisted in the Armed Forces. He married Vera Millsap in 1967. Richard spent the majority of his working years as a substation electrician with MidAmerican Energy from which he retired. Richard enjoyed traveling and watching NASCAR with his wife, cooking, spending time with family, and having a drink downtown with friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Edna Duff; his wife, Vera Duff; children, Cindy Gruver and William “Billy” Duff; and siblings, Dwight, LeRoy, Darrell, Zeda and Ulva.
He is survived by his sister, Joan Petro; children, Derrick Duff and Sandra (John) Lockhart; son-in-law, Dave Gruver; grandchildren, Cody (Jess) Lockhart, Dillion (Ashley) Lockhart, Jake (Liz) Gruver and William “Will” Duff, and two great-grandchildren, Claire Gruver and Piper Lockhart.
Private services were planned with burial at Morrisburg Cemetery in Guthrie County. Memorial contributions can be made to the ADM Booster Club.

John Olen Bridger

John Olen Bridger, born in Bethany, Missouri, on Aug. 27, 1943, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024. He graduated from Leon schools in 1961 then worked at John Deere until he was drafted into the Army in 1962. He returned to work at John Deere for 30 years until his retirement. John married Joyce Marie Potter on Oct. 2, 1966.
John was known for his generosity and willingness to help friends, often assisting with home repairs and renovations. His true passion, however, was spending time in his workshop, crafting beautiful furniture, and cherishing moments with his granddaughters.
John is survived by his wife, Joyce Bridger; his son, Michael (Mikael Jo) Bridger; his daughter, Cindy (Kenneth) Delaney; granddaughters, Bailey Jo Bridger, Peyton Delaney and Morgan Delaney; and his sister, Sue Gordon, as well as many other close family members. He was preceeded in death by his parents.
Private services will be held at a later date for family and close friends. Memorials are suggested to the Waukee Fire Association. Ernst Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Waukee is in charge of arrangements.
Richard snyder

Richard Cook Snyder

Richard Cook Snyder, 101, died on Oct. 4, 2024. He was born Jan. 28, 1923. He grew up on farms in Dallas County. He graduated from Van Meter High School in 1941. He served in the Army during World War II. Upon his return, he met and married his first wife, Cleola, and they had three children. Throughout the years, Richard worked as a custodian for the Dexter, Redfield and Collins school districts. He then went on to purchase a filling station in Collins, where the family had settled. He owned the filling station for more than 25 years before moving on to work for 3M in Ames from where he would retire. When Cleola passed away in 1987, Richard moved to Adel to be closer to family.
Upon his return to Adel, Richard met Lucille Hol, a teller at the Brenton Bank. They went on to be married 25 years until Lucy’s passing in 2016.
Richard was a longtime member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. While Richard was loved by most everyone who knew him, it was his youngest sister, Kay, with whom he was particularly close.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Opal; spouse, Lucy; spouse, Cleola; daughter, Marcella; sons, Donny and Doug; sisters, Norma Herring, Florence Hutzell and Shirley Snyder; and brother, Phillp Snyder.
He is survived by his sister, Kay Struble; grandson, Dallas Snyder; granddaughter, Natalie Snyder; daughter-in-law, Judy Snyder; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bonnie Lou Bowles

Bonnie L. Bowles was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on Jan. 26, 1936. She was raised and educated in Rowan. After high school, Bonnie attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. On Aug. 25, 1957, she married Andy J. Bowles from Adel.
Bonnie worked in several locations as an administrative assistant prior to starting a family, when she became a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Bonnie was a long-time member of the De Soto United Methodist Church in De Soto. Her interests included cooking and baking, gardening, crafts, playing bingo, and spending time with family and friends.
Bonnie died Sept. 27, 2024, at Azria Health in Winterset, where she had been a resident for more than seven years. She is preceeded in death by her parents; brothers, Doede Harms and Bill Lockett; sister, Violet Pohlman; and son-in-law, Michael Wonderlin.
Bonnie is survived by Andy Bowles, her husband of 67 years; sons, Jerry (Sheri) Bowles and Alan (Stacey) Bowles; daughter, Beth Wonderlin; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Oct. 1 at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. Interment followed in the Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Thomas ‘Tom’ Walter Harbison

Thomas “Tom” Walter Harbison, 76, died Sept. 26, 2024, at Independence Village in Waukee. He was born in 1947 in Waynesville, Missouri. Tom graduated from El Dorado High School in Arkansas and Oklahoma State University with a degree in agriculture economics. He also served in the Reserves.
In 1969, Tom married Jeanne Mauk. The two shared 55 years, traveled, built a family and shared a lifetime of memories. Tom dedicated much of his career to agriculture banking, working with Wells Fargo and Farmers Hybrid before ending his professional life at the Small Business Administration (SBA). He spent 17 years as a scoutmaster, guiding young boys on countless adventures, including a memorable trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Arizona and the Boundary Waters in Canada. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf, hunting, fishing and embracing the outdoors, especially in the mountains.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jeanne; children, Heather, Jay (Jen), and Ross (Laura); grandchildren, Brock, Hannah, Quinn, Tommy and Leila; sisters, Sue Harbison and Jane (Russ) Jackson; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation was Oct. 3 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel. Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at the First Christian Church in Adel. Jean Schnoes

Jean Marie Schnoes, 66, died Sept. 26, 2024, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville after many years of medical issues with her neurodegenerative disease (olivopontocerebellar atrophy) that resulted in progressive deterioration of the nerve cells in her brain.
Jean was born on April 8, 1958, in Charles City and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1976. She graduated with her accounting degree at the University of Northern Iowa in May 1980. She worked at several accounting positions before retiring from Wells Fargo due to her health. She met Mike Schnoes while working in Des Moines, and they were married on May 19, 1984. After living in West Des Moines for a number of years, she and Mike moved to an acreage outside of Adel, where they enjoyed the country life, planting a garden every year and harvesting fruits from their many fruit trees. Jean also loved ice cream, which worked well with their purchase of the Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe.
Jean is survived by her brother, Mike, and his wife, Vickie, who took care of her during her final years at the Clarksville nursing home; brother-in-law, Rob, and his wife, Sandy; nieces and nephews: David Miller (Ambarlee), Chris Miller (Jennifer), Sarah Lodge (Luke), Adam Schnoes (Jeannie), and Joe Schnoes (Clara), as well as other relatives and her church friends and neighbors from the Adel area. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; and in-laws Leo and Jane Schnoes, Rick Schnoes and Teresa Schnoes.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel with family greeting friends one hour prior beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Booneville Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.

Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Anne Marshall

Kathleen “Kathy” Anne Marshall, 74, died Sept. 23, 2024. She was born April 1, 1950, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and grew up in Des Moines, where she attended St. Pius X Catholic School and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1969. She married John Carl Marshall on Jan. 5, 1990, in Des Moines. They spent their lives together in Adel until John’s death on Feb. 10, 2017.
Kathy was a member of De Soto Calvary Baptist Church. She loved cats, Faith Hill, the color green, and her Irish heritage. Kathy made sure everyone received greeting cards for birthdays and thank-yous and thinking-of-yous.
Kathy is survived by three children and their families: Raymond Banks, John Parcel and Coleen Carper; five siblings, Dennis (Peggy) Strode, Eileen (Kevin) Kehoe, Rick (Vivian) Strode, Margaret (Jeff) Berry and Mary Strode Pals; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Marshall; and her parents, Thomas and Dorothy Strode.
Visitation was Oct. 2 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel, followed by a graveside service at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, where Kathy was laid to rest with her husband, John.

Betty Irene Perkins

Betty Irene Perkins, 77, died Sept. 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. No services are planned at this time.
Betty Irene Johnson was born to William Fred Johnson and Lois Ione Silvers on Jan. 27, 1947, in Oskaloosa. She was the oldest of seven girls and was educated in the Des Moines school system, graduating from Des Moines North High School with the class of 1966.
Betty liked to keep busy and enjoyed working. She loved all of her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kathy. She is survived by her remaining sisters, Joyce (George) Fees, Peggy McVey, Vicky Bowen, Debbie (Duane) Coffman, and Mary (Dave) Avaux; and her best-friend, Margie McVey.

Mary Alice Landhuis

Mary Alice Landhuis died Sept. 15, 2024. She was born in November of 1935 in Ogden, the daughter of Harry and Clara Smith. Mary graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1953. She graduated from McPherson College in Kansas in 1957 with a dual bachelor’s degree in education and history. She was named to the Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society.
She married Dr. Leo Landhuis in June of 1957, a marriage that lasted 24 years. She taught P.E. and English at Wellman secondary school before the birth of her first child.
She continued her education at Stephens College, Missouri, graduating with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and biology in 1984. Her excellence in her studies earned her a spot in the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. Mary was a member of the Trinity Presbytery Church of Columbia, Missouri, for more than 50 years and served on many church committees.
She enjoyed quilting, reading, attending her children’s school and sports activities and attending Stephens College music and drama programs.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Delbert and Harold. She is survived by her sister, Etha; children, Louis, Mark, Laura (Ron) and Mary Jane (Brad); four grandchildren, James (Chase), Jessica, William and Addison; and one great-grandchild, Bennett. 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel with family greeting friends one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the American Diabetes Association.

Shirley Marie Schick Berns

Shirley Marie Schick Berns, 90, died on Sept. 19, 2024, on her 70th wedding anniversary. Shirley was born on the Schick family farm southwest of Bayard on May 2, 1934, to Henry W. Schick and Iva M. Honold Schick. She was baptized June 3, 1934, and confirmed on March 21, 1948. She graduated from Bayard High School in 1952. She received a secretarial associate degree from AIB in Des Moines.
Shirley and Marvin Berns were married on Sept. 19, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Coon Rapids. He preceded her in death in 2022. They lived on a farm southwest of Lohrville for 54 years and, upon retirement in 2009, moved to Urbandale to be closer to family.
She was active in her church and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and doing outdoor work.
She is survived by her children, Donald (Pam) Berns, Renae (Brett) Johnson and Jana (Charles) Robertson; grandchildren, Chelsea (Steven) Binz, Kyle (Kari) Johnson, Courtney (Justin) Malicoat, Jack Robertson and Christina Robertson; great-grandson, Oliver Binz; sister, Elaine Schick Anderson; brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) Schick and Loren (Jane) Schick; sister-in-law, Carolyn Schick; brother-in-law, Raymond Diekman; and many other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brother, Donald Schick; brothers-in-law, Jerry Anderson and Dale (Bonnie) Berns; sister-in-law, Dorothy Diekman; nephews, Brian Schick, Tommy Berns, Brian Berns and Bruce Diekman; and parents-in-law, Harold and Lillian Berns.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel with family greeting friends one hour prior. Burial will take place in the Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church. Gloria Duffey

Gloria Duffey, 72, of Adel, died Aug. 19, 2024, at the Adel Acres Nursing Home. Gloria was born on Oct. 17, 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Mack and Maurita Duffey. She attended school in Adel and graduated in 1970. Gloria worked as a hairstylist after high school and enjoyed a long career spanning more than 40 years.
She liked to travel, visiting friends in California. Their children referred to her as their fairy godmother. Even though she always wished she had a bigger family, she considered all of her friends family. Gloria also loved her many fur babies and made sure to have a pet at all times.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 from 4-6 p.m. at the Raccoon Valley Community Building in Adel. Burial of the urn will take place at 3 p.m. in the Oakdale Cemetery. Willa Jeanne McCauley

Willa Jeanne McCauley, 85, known to everyone as Jeanne, died Sept. 10, 2024. She was born on Aug. 16, 1939, to Colan and Arwillda Green in the rural area of Confidence. She graduated from Corydon High School in 1957. In 1958, Jeanne married Bud McCauley. Together they built a life in Adel with their two children, Dennis and Mindy.
She enjoyed spending time at their house at the Lake of the Ozarks and snow skiing with family and friends. Jeanne and Bud even took a trip to Austria and skied in the Alps. Jeanne enjoyed singing in the church choir and participating in community musicals. She volunteered at church activities, the local food bank and as a poll worker. She enjoyed her card club and the Iowa State Fair.
In addition to her parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard and Victor Green. Jeanne is survived by her husband, Bud McCauley, and their son, Dennis, and his family, Nate McCauley, Callie and her husband, Jared Garoutte, and their daughter, Keagan; daughter, Mindy, and her husband, Jerry Kennedy, and their daughters, Jessica and Abigail Kennedy; her sisters, Joyce McKimbell and Mary Barton; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation services will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel from 5-7 p.m. Memorial services will be on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Adel. A light luncheon will be held following services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ADM Fine Arts Department.
