Dr. George A Hofmann, 84, of Johnston, died May 13, 2022. George was born in Burlington. He moved with his family to Alliance, Nebraska, where he attended Chadron State University and obtained his bachelor of science degree. He furthered his education at Colorado State University to become a veterinarian.
In 1961, he married Jean Nora Braddock. They lived in Fort Collins, Colorado. George was employed by the USDA as a meat inspector. He also worked with the Horse Protection Program, monitored puppy mills and, after retirement, worked for Hy-Vee.
He is survived by his wife; children Lynette (Louis) Gornick, Sharon (Larry Ludwig) Hofmann, Wayne and Kathy; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a brother. Funeral services were Friday, May 20 at Iles Brandt’s Funeral Home in Dallas Center. 

Ronald Dwayne Rosenberg, 90, died May 17, 2022. Ron was born in Grimes. He married Jodean Sly in 1951. They made their home in Grimes where they raised their two sons. Ron was a member of Teamsters Local #147 and later owned and operated JR Trucking, retiring in 2017. He served on the Grimes City Council in the early 1990s and was a 70-plus year member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Ron is survived by two sons, Keith (Pam) and Denny (Rita); sister, Phyllis; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and great-grandchildren, Maddie and Zoey Mickle.

Frances “Misty” Mae Trotter, 87, of Johnston died at home Wednesday, May 11, 2022. She worked at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge where she retired after many years of service. She was also a long-term member of the American Business Women Association. She is survived by several step-nieces and step-nephews, as well as many adopted family members.
A memorial graveside service was held Monday, May 23 at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale.

Carl Thomas Schwab, 75, died May 17, 2022. He was born in Clinton and graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1965. He then attended the University of Iowa where he was active in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1969. Carl married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Young, in 1970. He began his career as an accountant and then worked at Housby Mack. Later he purchased the Freightliner of Des Moines dealership, which he owned and managed until retiring in 2014. Carl enjoyed golf and was a lifelong member of Hyperion Field Club.

Heidi Kupka, 49, died unexpectedly on May 13, 2022. Heidi was born in Charles City to Mark and Bonnie (Bonita) Kupka. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1992. Heidi graduated from Iowa Central Community College with an associate’s degree. Heidi spent her working life in a variety of positions including many years as a laundry aide and most recently working in guest services at Johnston Hy-Vee. Heidi was a faithful member of Des Moines Mennonite Church.
She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother; sister, Tina Moore; brother, Kevin Kupka (Kristie Gray); and two nephews, Zach Moore and Alex Moore. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, May 21 at Des Moines Mennonite Church. 

Ruby Jean Halbfass, 84, died at home on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Jean was born in Reasnor. She retired from EDS in 2005. Jean and Denny were married Oct. 4, 1980. She was president, secretary and treasurer in many bowling leagues. In 2017, she was inducted into the greater Des Moines USBC Hall of Fame. She attended 24 national tournaments and more than 30 state tournaments.
Jean is survived by her husband, Denny; daughter, Deb (Rusty) Dalton; son, John (Melanie) Grimm; and numerous other relatives. No services will be held at this time per Jean’s request. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery at a later date. 

Robert Lee Best, 92, of Waukee, died at his residence on May 6, 2022. He attended Van Meter Schools and graduated in 1947. In 1957, he married Doris Stout. Robert was a farmer for many years and was a Marine veteran of the Korean War.
Robert is survived by his sister, Marguerite Lienemann; niece, Julie Lienemann; two great-nephews; one great-niece; and one great-great niece. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; son, Marvin; and brother, Donald.

Harvey Marion Grabill, 81, died May 7, 2022. He was born in Missouri. Harvey later moved to Minburn and met his wife Linda (Rote) Grabill. They married in 1979 and together raised 12 children. Harvey worked for the City of Adel for 22 years and retired in 2001. He also served in the Adel Fire Department.
Harvey is survived by his wife; children, Mary, Patricia, Lewis, Rebecca, Ruby, Rose, Bobby (Robbi) Culp and Julie Kinkennon; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; mother-in-law; four siblings and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by sons Dean, Paul, Lawerence and Terry.
Services were held Saturday, May 14 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home. 

Sandee Anderson, 68, died May 10, 2022, after a brave battle with small cell lung cancer. Sandee was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, the fourth child of Mary Evelyn and William George Scott. The family moved to Urbandale in the early 1960s. Sandee later married and welcomed her first son, Steven Michael, in 1978. Her youngest son, Jeffrey Allan, was born in 1979. Later in life, Sandee settled at a senior community in West Des Moines.
Sandee was preceded in death by a brother, George Scott. Sandee is survived by her sons, Steve (Sarah) Anderson and Jeff (Carly) Anderson; one brother; two sisters; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. A visitation for the family will be 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel. A special celebration of life luau will be 12-3 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at a family residence in Altoona. 

Betty Marie Niccoli, 88, died on May 12, 2022, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines of a stroke after complications from heart surgery. Betty was born in Des Moines. In her retirement years, she worked as a bus aide for the West Des Moines Public Schools and at Respite Connections as a caretaker for David.
She is survived by her children, Paul Martin “Marty” Villalobos, Vicki Villalobos, and Lori (Mike) McGrath; son-in-law, Jeff Glenn; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild with one on the way. She was preceded in death by siblings Ruth, Rachel, Reece, Marg and Josephine; and her daughter, Julie Glenn.

Rosemary “Rose” Privitera, 91, died May 5, 2022. Visitation was Friday, May 13 at Hamilton’s, followed by a prayer service. Rosemary was born in Chicago. She worked for the Chicago Public Library for many years until falling in love with Theodore “Ted” Privitera and eventually uniting in marriage in 1957. She and Ted resided in Chicago and moved to Elk Grove Village in the early 1960s, where she worked for the Elk Grove Public Library for 25 years. They were residents of Elk Grove Village for more than three decades. Both eventually retired and moved to Las Vegas.

Jay Phelps Reichenbacher, 84, died May 10, 2022. Jay was born in Aurora, Illinois. He married Jeanne Loewen in 1993 in Des Moines. Jay is survived by his wife; son, Jay II (Desiree); daughter, Dianne Rechenbacher; stepson, Brian Gardner; two grandchildren; and brother, Dennis (Anke). He was preceded in death by a sister, Anita Kay Pearson, and stepdaughter, Michelle Gardner. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. on Monday, June 13 at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. Frank Anthony Cataldo III, 59, of West Des Moines, died at his home Friday, May 13, 2022. Frank graduated from Dowling High School. After graduating, he attended Grand View before joining the family business, Iowa EPS Products, where he served as vice president.
Frank played for the Des Moines Buccaneers hockey team. He was an active member of AA and served as a sponsor, inspiring many and giving back to his community. Frank married his high school sweetheart D’Ann Hammond (Gudenkauf), and they had one daughter, Maria (David) Andrew. He later remarried and had son Frank, daughter Katie and two adopted daughters, Renee and Amber.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Sandra, and survived by his father, George; two brothers, Michael (Karen) and Charles (Gia) and adopted brother Jerry (Denise) Best; in addition to his five children, six grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Tuesday, May 17 at Dunn’s Funeral Home. Memorial Mass was held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 18, followed by a private family burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Rev. Steven Howard Eastman, 72, died May 8, 2022, at MercyOne West Medical Center in West Des Moines. Steven was born in Marshalltown and grew up in Evansdale and Cedar Falls, where he married Debbie Stark. In 1970, he answered the call of God to be a youth minister at Open Bible Church in Waterloo. He received his education from Berean School of the Bible in 1976 and became the associate pastor for Glad Tiding Assembly of God in Cedar Falls.
From 1977, he pastored churches in Van Wert, Clarinda, Cedar Falls, DeWitt and Hale, Missouri. He was currently serving the Peru United Methodist Church. While pastoring, Steve also worked at several other jobs.
Steve is survived by his children, Steven Eastman, Jr. (Heather), Troy Eastman (Sarah), Tony Eastman (Lora), Kim Eastman-Allen (Darrell), and adopted son, Cody Eastman; brother, Jerry Eastman (Cindy); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were held on Friday, May 13 at the Peru United Methodist Church. 

Betty Jean “Tootie” Johnston Everhart, 79, of West Des Moines died May 10, 2022.  Betty was born in Eddyville. She married Tracy Glen Everhart Sr. in 1961. They lived in Cedar Rapids, West Branch, Omaha and St. Charles, Missouri, before moving to West Des Moines. Betty was a registered nurse, impacting many lives.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years; sons Tracy Glen Jr. (Mary Jo) and John Frederick (Sharon); six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 17 at New Hope Assembly of God in Urbandale. Graveside services followed at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville.

Gerald Leroy “Jake” Benge, 83, died April 22, 2022. He was born in Indianola and served in the U.S. Navy. Jake retired as the supervisor of the maintenance garage at the Des Moines Water Works. He is survived by his wife, Norma; son, Alan (Lori); 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret; his daughter, Wanda; and four siblings.

John Glenn Willett, 52, died May 8, 2022 in Missouri. Visitation was May 13 at Overton Funeral Home, Indianola. Cremation followed. He was born in Des Moines to Thomas and Darlene (Moss) Willett. He graduated from Interstate 35 School District in 1989. He worked as an auto mechanic and was considered a jack of all trades.

Dustin Lee Dittmer, 34, of Colfax died May 7, 2022. Dustin was the son of Kathy and Lee Cochran and Gregory and Michelle Dittmer. He worked at Dee Zee Manufacturing from 2018 to his death.
He is survived by the love of his life, Kaylee Riddle, and their unborn daughter, Reighlynn. He is also survived by his siblings, Joseph, Cody (Kellie), Jesse, Shannon, Christopher, Zachary (Alayna) and Heather Lemon; grandparents, Robin (Danny) Mackle and Gary May and Mary Dittmer; a nephew, two nieces; his late wife’s children, Stephanie Lussier, Jennifer Allan, Kelsey Miller; grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Dustin was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Joseph Dittmer; maternal aunt, Traci May; maternal cousin, Ashley Hoch; and his late wife, Shelley Signs-Dittmer.

Lauren Hensley, 64, died May 7, 2022, in Des Moines. She was born in Akron, Ohio, and began her career with Bridgestone/Firestone in 1976. After a few transfers between Tennessee and Iowa, she finished her career in Nashville, retiring in 2021. Lauren was married to Steve Hensley in 2000.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Brooke (Brian) Henry; granddaughters, McKenna and Ashlyn; sister, Esther Finelli; as well as other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Burial of cremains with military honors for Dewey “Jud” McKee were held on Thursday, May 12 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Dewey died Dec. 25, 2021, at age 91. Celebration of life services were held Dec. 30, 2021, at the Norwalk Christian Church.
Dewey “Jud’ McKee was born and raised in Indianola. He attended Indianola High School and graduated at age 16. He attended Simpson College briefly before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and serving in Korea. In 1959, he met and married his wife, Carolyn.
Dewey is survived by his wife of 62 years; children, Craig McKee, Cathy Catron; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, LulaBelle McGuire; and many nieces, nephews and other family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey E. and Virginia McKee; sons, Michael and John; grandson, Trevor; and four siblings. 

Graveside services for Delores Darlene Heckathorn, 87, of West Des Moines will be at 10 a.m., May 21 at the Van Wert cemetery in Van Wert. The family will gather at the Assembly of God Church in Van Wert immediately after the service. Delores died Oct. 9, 2021 at UnityPoint Hospital. Those left to cherish her memory include George (Dixie) South; sisters-in-law Sue South and June Petty; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd; son, Kevin; and brother Eldon South. 

Virginia May Barksdale, 94, of Ankeny, died May 9, 2022. She graduated in 1946 from Springfield Ohio High School. She attended nursing school and graduated as a registered nurse in 1949. She married Joseph Allen Barksdale in 1948. They had two children: Bruce (Jacqueline) and Kathy (Christopher) Cornwell. Bruce died in 2004.
After they were married, the Barksdales lived in Alabama and Ohio, where Virginia was a surgical nurse. In 1958, they moved to Des Moines. Virginia stayed home to raise the children but eventually returned to nursing. She worked at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines for four years then became a school nurse, working for 16 years at Moulton and Oak Park Elementary. When Virginia and Joseph retired from their jobs, they began new careers. They started a food business at the Iowa State Fairgrounds selling cookies. In 2019, they gave the business to the people of Iowa and retired.

Janeene Anne (Miller) Carlisle, 84, died May 8, 2022. She was born in Des Moines and attended East High School in Des Moines, graduating in 1956, followed by the Iowa School of Beauty to be a cosmetologist. Janeene met her husband, Larry, at a bowling alley, and they married on Valentine’s Day in 1959. They had two daughters.
Janeene was active in East High reunion preparations. She was an active member of the Ankeny YMCA. She worked at Ankeny Central Pet Clinic (Ankeny Animal & Avian Clinic) for more than 12 years. Larry and Janeene lived in Ankeny for 22 years. They both retired and moved to Polk City in 1990. Janeene moved to Mill Pond Independent Living in Ankeny in 2017.
Janeene was preceded in death by her husband and daughter Corriene. Janeene is survived by her daughter Nadine Baker; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister; two nieces; one nephew; her “adopted” daughter and family; and many friends. A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at the VFW Post 9662, 1309 N.E. 66th Ave., Des Moines. 

Allen Jensen, 82, of Ankeny, died May 12, 2022, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. He was born in Blair, Nebraska, to James and Regina (Dorzinski) Jensen. He attended school at Rippey and Minburn, graduating with the class of 1958. He served in the United States Marines from 1960 to 1966. He married Linda Lou Madren in 1960. He worked for John Deere in Ankeny for 30 years, farmed near Madrid and, after retiring from John Deere, drove a truck for the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ankeny and the John Deere retirees’ group.
He is survived by his wife; son, James Jensen; daughter, Debbie Simmer (Jonathan Koughn); granddaughter; sister; and numerous nieces and nephews. Russ Heinzerling died May 9, 2022. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 14 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ankeny.
Russell Elmer Heinzerling graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1982, NIACC in 1984 with his accounting associate’s, the University of Northern Iowa in 1986 with his bachelor’s of financial management, and Drake University in 1996 with his MBA. In 1988, Russ married Pam Thompson. They had two children.
Russ started his professional career in banking for six years, taught many years part-time as an adjunct professor at DMACC and Drake University, and spent almost 29 years at Principal Financial Group.
Russ is survived by his wife; children Austin (Landry) Heinzerling and Marissa (Sawyer) Phillips; mother; mother-in-law; five siblings; two brothers-in-law; many nieces and nephews and additional family. Nancy Ann Rourick, 89, of Ankeny, died May 10, 2022, at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin; daughter Teresa Klyn; and son Kelly Rourick. Roger Herman Santi, 74, died May 9, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. Roger graduated from Madrid High School in 1965. In 1973, he married Cheri Zaruba. They made their home in Perry for 20 years then moved to Ankeny, where they lived for 20 years. In 2004, Roger retired from John Deere in Ankeny after more than 30 years. Roger was an officer in the Vittoria Lodge in Ankeny. For the last eight years, they have made Lake Panorama their home.
Roger is survived by his wife; sons, Tony (Jennifer) and Larry (Marci); four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time. 

Jon Ward, 68, died May 9, 2022, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born in Mt. Pleasant. He graduated from William Penn University. He was a professional golfer who worked at Golf Galaxy for more than 20 years.
Jon is survived by his sons, Nicholas (Janelle) and Nathan Ward; father, Bill Ward; grandson, Cruz Ward; brother, Jim (Sue) Ward; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Laura Ward; mother, Marcella Ward; and brother, Jeff Ward.

His wife and children survive, as well as his parents, Lisa and Scott Spieker; birth father Robert Brown; sister Molly (Slade); grandmother Jean; and numerous other relatives, in-laws and friends.

Barbara Paul died May 8, 2022, at Bishop Drumm Care Facility. Barb was born in Dixon, Illinois, and raised in Jerome. She played basketball for both Numa High School and Seymour High School where she graduated in 1948. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 and obtained her Bachelor of General Studies degree from Drake University in 1981.
After graduating from nursing school, she began her career at Mercy on the 3-11 shift starting in the orthopedic unit and then as the nursing supervisor for seven years. In 1959, Barb married Eugene J Paul and welcomed triplets the  next year. They made their home in Urbandale, across the street from St. Pius X Catholic Church and School.
Barb stayed home to raise her children for 10 years. She returned to Mercy Hospital as a part-time nursing administration patient care coordinator in 1970 and served in that role until her retirement in 1995.
Barb is survived by her children, Dr. Jean M. Paul and John E. Paul. Her husband, Eugene; her son Thomas; and her mother, Edith Welch, preceded her in death.
A visitation was held Sunday, May 15 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Urbandale. Mass of Christian burial was Monday, May 16, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Urbandale. 

Carolyn J. Hebron, 80, died May 5, 2022, at Mercy One Hospice in Johnston. Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 11, at Grandview Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow in Glendale Cemetery.

Andrew James Crowley, 24, died April 29, 2022. Born in Des Moines, Andrew grew up and lived in Urbandale until graduating from Johnston High School in 2016. He was a lifelong member of Plymouth Congregational Church. Andrew earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of Iowa in 2021, with a double major in economics and ethics and public policy. He was a member and former president of the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Delta Lambda Phi social fraternity. He started his first professional job in quality management at Epic, a medical software company in Verona, Wisconsin, in July 2021.
Andrew is survived by his parents, Jason and Laura Crowley; sister, Katherine Crowley; grandmother, Mary Crowley; and his beloved cats, Callie, Sesame and Mocha. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, John Crowley, and his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Dorothy Jeanne Bridenstine.

Anna Sophia Heeren, 15, died on May 7, 2022. She was born in Cherokee and attended Aurelia Elementary School through second grade. The family moved to Grimes in 2015, and she attended Dallas Center-Grimes schools into her freshman year. Anna was active in Sunday school, youth group and church choir at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes.
In 2020, Anna was diagnosed with bilateral thalamic glioma brain tumors, which later progressed into her brain stem. She underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines until March 2022.
Anna is survived by her brother, Rylan Heeren; mother, Summer Heeren; father, Jason Heeren (Rachel Henigan); Emily and Autumn Henigan; grandparents, Dave and Janeen Hinkeldey and Richard and Julie Heeren; great-grandparents Carolyn Faux and Sharon Heeren; five cousins; several aunts and uncles; and many extended family and friends.

Katherine Jean (Gamble) Bowersox, 42, died May 9, 2022, at her apartment in Grimes. Katherine was born and raised in Saylorville and lived and worked around the Des Moines metropolitan as a nurse and nurse practitioner.
Surviving are her father, Dan Gamble; sisters Tracy (John) Ripperger and Kristin (Jim) Wilbanks; nephew Patrick Wilbanks; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. Katherine was preceded in death by her mother, Diana Lynn (Hermann) Gamble, and grandparents.

Linda Holtgrewe, 69, died May 8, 2022, in Des Moines. Services were held on Friday, May 13 at Southeast Polk Family Church in Pleasant Hill. Burial of cremains will be in the New Altoona Cemetery at a later date. Dennis Dwayne “Denny” Hagan, 79, of Altoona, died May 3, 2022. He was born in Des Moines to Paul and Betty (Watters) Hagan. Denny is survived by his wife, Sue Hagan; children, Sherry (Jamie) Walker and Dewayne Hagan; grandchildren, Allyson (Nic Roney) Walker, Nathan (Mary McKee) Walker, Lily Walker and Connor Hagan; brothers, Gary (Diane) Hagan and David (Jeanne) Hagan. Leona Mae Mahoney, 88, died at Parkridge Specialty Care on May 9, 2022. She was born in Clearfield and graduated from Clearfield Community School in 1952. Leona attended Thompson Beauty School in Des Moines and worked as a beautician, first in Creston and then in Des Moines. She married Roger Mahoney in 1955 and had two daughters. She had a Blue Bird group in Ankeny, then the family moved to the Bondurant area, where Leona and the girls joined the 4H club. She worked at Farrar Elementary School, first as a librarian and then as the office secretary, and also as a fill-in cook, teacher, nurse and principal as needed. Leona and Roger retired in 1996. They spent winters in Arizona.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years and three siblings. She is survived by her children, Sandi (Mike) Sibley and Karen (Allen) Bieghler; four great grandsons; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held Saturday, May 14, at Santiago United Methodist Church in Mitchellville. 

Alex Blake James, 36, died May 3, 2022. A funeral service was held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway on May 7. Alex was born in Des Moines on Dec. 30, 1985, to Paula (Pearson) and Daniel James. He graduated from Adel De Soto Minburn High School and was an active member of the thespian group and drummer in the band.
Following high school, Alex worked for Home Care Services as a dispatcher and most recently for De Lage Lander Financial Services in customer service. He also worked part time at the Adel Library for many years.

Arnold “Arnie” Johansen, 93, died May 8, 2022. Arnie was born in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, he followed a friend to Waldorf College in Forest City where he met Willa Mae Bauge. They were married in 1951. In 1960, they moved to Urbandale where they raised their two sons.
Arnie worked for 40 years at Little Giant Crane and Shovel as a transportation manager. He was an active member of many affiliations. He was a 50+ year member of Capital Lodge 110 of Des Moines, a subordinate lodge of the Grand Lodge of Iowa; a 32nd degree Mason of the Iowa Scottish Rite; a longtime member and commander of the VFW Local 9662; and a member of the Urbandale Lions Club and High 12 Club.
He is survived by his sons Craig (Diane) and Curt (Kathy); four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister and one brother. Paul Robert Schulte, 61, of Urbandale died May 8, 2022, after a battle with cancer. Paul was born in Des Moines. He grew up in West Des Moines and attended WDM schools before his career in the carpentry industry, owning both Schulte Woodworking and Schulte Millworking.
Paul is survived by his children Stephanie (Don) Kinna, Chris Schulte and Shawna Schulte; several grandchildren; four siblings; companion Shelley Lytle; and nieces, nephews, an aunt, uncles, friends and co-workers. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 12 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. 

Bernadine “Bernie” Rullestad, 83, died Dec. 23, 2021. Bernie resided in Urbandale for more than 50 years with her husband of 63 years, Richard “Shorty” Rullestad. She had three children, Luanne, Lynette and Lisa, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Carol “Jeanne” Harvey, 88, died April 29, 2022, at Glen Oaks in Urbandale. She was born in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Drake University. She shared her joy of learning with countless students over her 48-year teaching career, the majority spent at Jackson Elementary.
Jeanne is survived by her daughters, Libby (Dana) Harvey-Hill and Tamara Harvey; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; five siblings, and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Harvey; daughter Brenda Harvey; and two sisters.
Services will be held on Monday, May 16 at 2 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N.W. 60th Ave., Des Moines. The family will greet guests one hour prior to services. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. 

Daniel Ramirez Martinez, 86, died April 24, 2022, at the Urbandale Health Care Center while under the care of Suncrest Hospice. Daniel was born in Mason City. He was one of 18 children and the youngest of the boys. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17. He served as part of the Crash Rescue Team from 1952-1956. After his military service, he began working for the railroad and continued to serve with the National Guard.
Daniel married Barbara Magnuson, and they had four children. He is survived by his daughters Debbie Webb (Steve) and Melissa Martinez; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter Teresa, son Daniel Jr., and 13 siblings. Funeral services were held Friday, April 29 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home in Des Moines, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. 

Robert Oscar Garrison, 69, died on May 4, 2022, due to Parkinson’s Lewy Body dementia. Bob was born in Emmetsburg. After graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1972, he studied at Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. He later received his master’s degree in nursing from Drake University while working for the Iowa State Patrol. During his 32-year tenure, Bob served as a trooper, assistant district commander, district commander, area commander, Departmental Training Academy commander, and executive assistant to the Commissioner of Public Safety. He was appointed to head the Iowa State Patrol in 1999, a position he held for eight years. Having no interest in early retirement, Bob spent two years as chief of security for the Iowa DOC before being named the new chief of the law enforcement bureau for the Iowa DNR in 2010. After retiring in earnest, Bob spent his time fishing and with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Susan Garrison; sisters, Robin Carr and Rosanne Garrison; step-children Emily Kramer and Aaron Meyer; and nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Services were May 11 at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church. 

Carolyn Bachtell, 64, of Urbandale, died May 4, 2022, at Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines of heart failure. She was born in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in 1976. She attended Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1981 with a degree in public relations and banking. She worked in the banking industry her entire life and finished her career at Wells Fargo, first in Dallas, Texas, and then Des Moines. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and PEO chapter GC.
She is survived by her sister, Sara (Jim) Burke; brothers Jamie (Carla) Bachtell and Robert (Chua) Bachtell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Services were May 10 at Locke at Tower Park in Waterloo. Condolences may be left at www.lockefuneralservices.com.
