Madonna Durham

Madonna “Miss Madonna” Jean Durham, 93, died July 25, 2022. She was born in Rexfield, the daughter of Perry and Naomi (Engstrom) Welch. Madonna grew up in Melcher Dallas and later moved to Des Moines, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1947. In 1989, she married Henry L. “Hank” Durham and moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, where they lived for 30 years.
Madonna enjoyed teaching Sunday school, acting as a Baxter County Prayer Warrior, and sharing the word of God with others. Madonna was a member of the Hawkeye Thimblers and Extension Club.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Chuck (Terri Vioglavich) Sample, Mike (Dawn King) Sample, Daryl Sample, Joy (Brad Jump) Schneider; step-children, Mary (Doug) Neves, Ruth (Ron) Harrison, and Bill (Kate) Durham; two sisters; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Philip Welch; sisters, Carol Welch and Marilyn Welch; and husband.

Kathryn Frances (Holcomb) Petersen

Kathryn Frances (Holcomb) Petersen died July 26, 2022. She was born in 1941 to Kenneth and Annette (Bestenlehner) Holcomb in Whittemore. She grew up in Algona and graduated from St. Cecelia School. Kay married Jerry Petersen in 1960. They lived in various places in Iowa and Oregon, eventually settling in Waukee, where they retired and lived at the time of her death. Kay had various jobs throughout her life: farm wife, waitress, grocery clerk, bartender and cook, U.S. Postal worker, convenience store manager, head cook and print office manager of Waukee High School.
She is survived by her husband; children Debbie (Steven) Gray, Tom (Char) Petersen and Lorrie (Dave) Pullman; and six grandchildren; and siblings, Bill (Kitty) Holcomb and Cynthia Ellis. She was preceded in death by four siblings.
A celebration of life was held Monday, Aug. 1 at Ernst Funeral Home, Waukee. A family graveside service was held at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona on Wednesday, Aug. 3, followed by a family reception. In lieu of flowers, Kay and the family ask that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sister Harriett (Mary St. Edward) Ping, CHM

Sister Harriett (Mary St. Edward) Ping, CHM, 89, died July 22, 2022, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. She was born in Fort Madison. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1951 and professed vows in 1954.
Sister received degrees from Ottumwa Heights College, Marycrest College and the University of North Dakota. From 1954 to 1981, she taught science and math at eight schools, including schools in Davenport, Ottumwa, Dunlap, Le Mars, Marshalltown and Fort Madison. She then served as a librarian for Marycrest College and Teikyo Marycrest University in Davenport. From there, she served as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Martina Place in Johnston until her retirement in 2002.
During her retirement at Humility of Mary Center, Sister volunteered at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat and Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. In 2016, her Ministry of Prayer and Witness continued at Bishop Drumm.
Sister Harriett was preceded in death by a brother. She is survived by two nephews, niece, eight grand-nieces, grand-nephew, and 10 great-grand-nieces and nephews, along with her CHM sisters and associates.
Services were held Thursday, July 28 at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel. A rosary and vigil service were held Friday, July 29, at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 30 at Magnificat Chapel in Humility of Mary Center. Memorials may be made to the Congregation of the Humility of Mary. Judith Elaine Boat

Judith “Judy” Elaine Boat, 82, died July 11, 2022. Born in Yale, Judy was the youngest of 10 children. She graduated from North High School in 1957 and married Dale later that year. Although she worked periodically throughout her life, she enjoyed being a homemaker and focused her attention on raising their three children: Randy (Stephanie) Boat, Paula Ziems, and Laine (Tom) Buck. She also adored being a grandma to nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Dale and Judy moved to Grand Living Assisted Living in West Des Moines five months ago after living their entire adult lives in the Des Moines area.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 15 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel, 801 19th St., West Des Moines. Memorial contributions are encouraged to be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice of the Midwest or the American Cancer Society.

Steven Lee Logsdon

Steven Lee Logsdon, 40, died July 9, 2022, following a swimming accident. Steven was born to Michael and Gale Logsdon in Humboldt. He was a 2000 graduate of Valley High School and graduated from Iowa State University with an ethics and business background. Ronald McDonald’s House and Adopt-A-Family were some of his passions for community involvement.
He leaves behind his mother; brothers, Justin (Megan) and Andrew (Melissa); two grandmothers; four nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and a host of friends. Steve was preceded in death by his father. A memorial service was held Monday, July 18 at Hamilton’s, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. James ‘Jim’ Dale Jones

James “Jim” Dale Jones, 77, of Johnston, died at home on July 2, 2022. Jim was born in Kirksville, Missouri. Jim graduated from Novinger R-1 schools in 1963, then the University of Missouri (Mizzou) in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1967, he married Janice Bailey. They had two sons, James Paul and Christopher Dale. He began his career in 1968 at Bankers Life in Des Moines, now Principal Financial Group, and retired after more than 40 years of service.
In his younger years, he was an avid runner, completing several marathons and other distance events. Later, he took up bicycling and completed several RAGBRAIs. He was an avid reader of all things and was a common sight at the local library wherever he lived.
Jim is survived by his sons James (Cathy Dakovich-Jones) and Chris (Jan); four grandchildren; a sister; and numerous extended family and friends.
A celebration of life was held Sunday, July 17 at the Des Moines Elks Lodge #98 in Pleasant Hill. Memorials may be directed to the Johnston Public Library or LifeServe Blood Center.

Janet Elaine Eisenbarth

Janet Elaine Eisenbarth, 70, died July 6, 2022. Janet graduated from Twin Rivers High School and Clarke College in Dubuque. She taught third grade for a couple of years before working as a secretary/receptionist for a West Des Moines real estate office. She retired in 2016 from the State Department of Iowa in the Office of Elder Affairs.
Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Gary, and long-time friend, Wayne Cook. She is survived by siblings Jeanne Eisenbarth, Nancy Buttel, Tom (Jan) Eisenbarth, Susan (Dirk) Underwood, Greg (Joan) Eisenbarth, Amy (Sam) Hinderks, Marla (Perry) Buffington; and many nieces and nephews.
A prayer vigil service with rosary was held July 14 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. Madeline Joan Harne

Madeline Joan Harne died at Bishop Drumm in Johnston on July 9, 2022. Madeline was born in Knoxville. She graduated from East High in 1955 and married Jim Harne in 1956. Madeline had various jobs besides homemaking, with a zeal for cleaning, cooking and baking. Madeline was the first mother to follow a daughter through Mercy School of Nursing, graduating with better grades as well at 49. Madeline was both a member of Simpson United Methodist Church with husband Jim and St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church.
Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Jim. She is survived by her children Warren K. (Jeri) Harne, Lorae (Dave) Nicodemus and Patricia (Larry) Walker; brother; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Martha JoAnn Hidlebaugh Irwin

Martha JoAnn Hidlebaugh Irwin, 87, of Redfield, died Sunday, July 10, 2022, at Lakeside Village in Panora. There will be a private burial prior to the memorial service, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Van Meter. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Eugene. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel on Friday, July 15.
Martha was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Bagley. Their family moved to De Soto where she graduated from De Soto Consolidated School District in the spring of 1952. Following graduation, she went to work for Ohio Casualty Insurance Company as a commercial property and casualty insurance rater. After 16 years at Ohio Casualty, she moved on to Chuck Brooks Insurance Agency, later called Brooks-Lussem Insurance, where she eventually became vice president of the agency. She retired Dec. 30, 1999.
Martha had several hobbies, some of which included hunting, fishing, playing cards, gardening and nature walks. She also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and she was a vocal fan. First and foremost, she cherished time spent with family.
Her legacy will continue on in the hearts and minds of her daughters, Sheryl (Paul) Fountas, Pat (Dave) Griffith, Maria (Jack) Ganoe, and Kathy (Rodger) McLaughlin; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Martha is preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and two sisters.

John R. Noe

John R. Noe, 89, died July 3, 2022. He was born in Des Moines and graduated from Adel High School in 1950. He received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and master’s degree from Drake University. John taught vocational agriculture, industrial arts and high school science at Waukee Community Schools for more than 30 years. In 1950, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout and served as an assistant scoutmaster in Adel. In 1957, he married Elise (Stoops) Noe, who also taught at Waukee Community Schools.
John was a long-time member and leader at First Christian Church in Adel, a board member of the Adel Public Library, and volunteer at Living History Farms and the local food pantry.
John was preceded in death by his spouse, parents, and sister Gretchen (Noe) Williams. John is survived by his children, Lance (Debbie) Noe and Claudette (Kelvin) Sederburg, and three grandchildren. Rodney Wayne Stucker

Rodney Wayne Stucker, 69, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, previously of Adel, died on June 29, 2022. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - McCalley Chapel in Adel. Family will greet friends prior to the service from 9-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place following the service at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
Rod was born May 7, 1953 in Perry. He graduated from Perry High school in 1961, then continued his education and career as a paramedic for Dallas County.
Rodney lived in Dallas County most of his life and was proud of his volunteer work at the Adel Fire Department. Rod had a passion for his community and helping others. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Later in life, when he met his wife, Liz, he learned that he had a passion to create enclosures for all of his wife’s “rehabs.”
Rod retired in 2015, living the next year in his RV while spending the winters fishing in Galveston, Texas, until he found the perfect place to park his wheels in Fairfield Bay.
He is survived by his wife, six children, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, sister Linda and mother Juanita “Fern.”
He is preceded in death by his father, Beanie; brother, Earl; and brother-in-law, Jim.

Susan Diane Belgarde

Susan Diane Belgarde, of Adel, died July 1, 2022. Suzy was born in 1945 in Deep River. She graduated from Adel High School in 1963. Suzy worked as a bookkeeper for Straight Engineering, Brenton Bank and Raccoon Valley State Bank throughout her life.
She is survived by her sister, Pat (Ron) Gilliland; daughter, Kiff Belgarde (Kirk Brown); granddaughters, Sara Brown and Jessie (James) Orf; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Judy Doty and Scott Keller; and Kiff’s father, Gene Belgarde.
Suzy was laid to rest at a private family service on Monday, July 11. A celebration of life lunch followed at First Christian Church, Adel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Phyllis Weil

Phyllis Weil, 88, died July 6, 2022. Phyllis was born in Williamson and graduated with the Waukee Class of 1952. She married Leo Weil in 1953. Besides raising a family, she worked locally in the grocery business and volunteered at the local food pantry, visited shut-in women, and volunteered at her church where she directed the funeral dinners for many years.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, brother and great-granddaughter. She is survived by her sons, Michael (Mary) and Pat (Janette); five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Dick L. Jensen

Dick L. Jensen died June 30, 2022. He was born in 1930. He graduated from Audubon Public Schools in 1948 and attended the University of Iowa’s College of Commerce and thereafter the College of Law, graduating with an LLB degree in 1954. Dick served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from 1955-1958.
Dick married Nancy Wilson in 1956 and raised two children. Dick opened a solo law practice in Audubon and most recently worked at the Des Moines law firm Dreher, Wilson and Adams, starting in 1972. In 2017, he retired from that firm, now known as Simpson, Jensen, Abels, Fischer and Bouslog.
Dick was active in the Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Masons, the Des Moines Chapter of the Royal Order of the Jesters, the Des Moines Club, Rotary Club, the Izaak Walton League, the Winterset Hunt Club and the New Pioneer Gun Club, among others.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, daughter Sarah, and brother Don (Sallie). He is survived by his son, Charley (Nancy), two grandchildren and great granddaughter.
At Dick’s request, there will be no funeral service, but the family invites friends and relatives to the Des Moines Golf and Country Club, 1600 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. A cocktail reception will be 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 24. Memorial donations may be made to Youth Homes Of Mid America (Des Moines) or any charity.

Kobi Shayne Ozimek

Kobi Shayne Ozimek, 24, died unexpectedly due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on July 1, 2022. Kobi was born in Des Moines, a loving son and a friend to all. He loved animals and was a proud dog dad to Diesel. Kobi enjoyed playing a variety of sports, was an avid gamer and enjoyed watching anime. He felt most at peace while riding his motorcycle or driving his Camaro.
He is survived by his mother, Brittny Pinegar (Frank Griffey); father, Joshua Stubbs; aunt, Katie Smuck; uncles, Sam Smuck, Ryan Pinegar, and Tony Pinegar; cousins, Kingston Williams and Oliver Smuck; as well as his grandpas, Pat Pinegar and Alan Ozimek. Kobi was preceded in death by his grandmas, Connie Fidler and Phyllis Ozimek.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 12 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N.W. 60th Ave., Des Moines. Services were held on Wednesday, July 13, also at the funeral home. Gary Newton

Gary Newton, 84, of West Des Moines (formerly of Greenfield), died July 9, 2022, at Crest Haven Care Center in Creston. He is survived by his three sons, Jeff, David (Deb) and Dennis (Laura); three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister; and other relatives and friends.

Jason ‘Nipper’ Ray Anderson

Jason “Nipper” Ray Anderson, 43, died unexpectedly on July 1, 2022 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Jason graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines then attended DMACC and Hamilton Business College, earning a degree in IT. He most recently worked for Heartland Coop as a network engineer. Jason was a devoted member of the Iowa Mustangs Unstabled Club.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Anderson; children, Natalie (Jared) Naja and Gunnar Anderson; one grandchild, with another on the way; parents, Jo and Tim Anderson; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his beloved car club friends of the Central Iowa Taco Club.

Emma Jean Blank

Emma Jean Blank, 89, of West Des Moines, died July 1, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Emma was born in Garnavillo. She graduated in 1950 from McGregor Public School. She earned a teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University in 1952, then completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Drake University. Emma Jean married Sylvester Gene Blank in 1953. They moved to Iowa City in 1956, where she worked for the University of Iowa at the Hospital School for Severely Handicapped Children and had their first child. They later moved to Des Moines, where Emma taught for 28 years, with 23 of those years at Cattell Elementary School. She retired in 1998.
Emma volunteered with the Des Moines Civic Ballet. She was a member and past president of Alpha Delta Kappa honorary society for women educators, enjoyed monthly meetings with former Cattell teachers, CPA Auxiliary group and Grace United Methodist Women.
Emma was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her husband; children Jonell (Mark Clardy), Judy Blank (Tom Sawyer) and Neil D. Blank (Margaret); four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Bud and Daniel; and many nephews and nieces. Memorial services are pending.

Santiago Jose Reyes-Savala

Santiago Jose Reyes-Savala gained his angel wings on July 2, 2022, at Methodist Hospital. Santiago was born with Trisomy 18 to Irma Savala and Jose Reyes on Jan. 17, 2022, in Des Moines. Santiago loved snuggles, bath time with his cute robe after, and being told he was the cutest baby. He loved Winnie the Pooh and all his nurses, and he made all the ladies fall in love with him. He was a very happy baby and was loved by everyone. Even though his life was short, it was amazing. He taught so many people what love really is.
He is survived by his parents; maternal grandparents, Estela and Gabriel Savala; paternal grandparents, Elsy Reyes and Roosobeth Torres-Reyes; uncles, Javier Savala and Julio Reyes; aunt, Rosa Reyes; and friends, Katie Buck, Shaylene Houston and Mandy Lopez.

Willard ‘Bill’ Classen

Willard “Bill” Classen died July 3, 2022 at Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines. He was born in Glenvil, Nebraska. Bill attended the University of Nebraska Agricultural College and graduated in 1950. He enlisted in the Army and spent most of his three years in Germany. In January 1954, he returned to Hastings, Nebraska, where he met Coryene “Corky” Herbst. They were married in August 1954. Bill joined the Rain and Hail Insurance Bureau in Omaha, Nebraska, retiring 36 years later as president of the company headquartered in West Des Moines. He was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall Of Fame in 2008. Bill was also a Mason and 50-year member of Za-Ga Zig Shrine.
He is survived by his wife, Corky, of 67 years; children Gregg (Sharon), Mark (Deb), and Karen (Randy) Chamberlain; eight grandchildren; and 24 nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were four brothers and two sisters.

Dorene Theisen Leo

Dorene Theisen Leo of West Des Moines, 94, died July 6, 2022. Dorene was born in New Vienna and raised by her paternal grandparents. She graduated from St. Boniface High School in New Vienna in 1946.
In 1947, she married Harold “Harry” C. Theisen of Monona. They were married for 25 years and had five children. In 1959, the family relocated to Des Moines. Harry unexpectedly died in 1974. Dorene married Guido Leo in 1982. Dorene and Guido made their home on the southside of Des Moines where they were devout members of St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish. Dancing at the Val Air Ballroom over the years was a favorite pastime of theirs. Dorene was an active member of the Society of Italian Americans Club Women’s Auxiliary and the Altar and Rosary Society.
Dorene is survived by her children, Linda (Tom) Armitage, Jim (Marsha), Debbie Theisen-Chenchar (Mike), Gina Bohler and Jeff Theisen; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by granddaughter Rachel Theisen Roberts; three brothers; and several siblings-in-law.
A private mass of a Christian burial was held at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines for family. Brooks Funeral Care coordinated arrangements. Memorial suggestions in memory of Dorene are to Saint Anthony’s Altar and Rosary Society or The Italian Americans Club Women’s Auxiliary.

Sally Ann Faber

Sally Ann (Schoonover) Faber, 79, died July 6, 2022, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Sally was a graduate of Drake University School of Pharmacy. She worked in retail pharmacies and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Polk County Pharmaceutical Association.
Sally is survived by her husband of 48 years, Gordon; one sister; and one niece.
Funeral mass was held Wednesday, July 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, plant a tree and be good to the earth.

September Ann Wethington-Smith

September Ann Wethington-Smith died June 25, 2022. She was born in 1961 to Robert and Evelyn (Miller) Wethington, along with her older sister, Jeneane and younger brother, Larry. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1980 and Iowa State University in 1984, before attending law school at the University of Iowa, where she met Brian Smith. They married in 1986 and made their home in Johnston, where they raised three children: Emma, Connor and Libbie. September was a brilliant lawyer and an unyielding, loving advocate for her family and friends and beloved dogs.

Ruth Cain Beaman

Ruth Cain Beaman, of Adel, died June 29, 2022. She was born in Madrid in 1932; her family later moved to a farm south of Adel. Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Russell Beaman, in 1950. They bought the second home ever built in Earlham on Maple Street and had four children there. Russ soon was working at KDPS, then IPTV. They both had amateur radio licenses, KOENA and KOAON, which they used to connect servicemembers to home during the Korean War.
Ruth and Russ built a new home north of De Soto, and Ruth soon worked at the De Soto Elevator and took classes on sewing with knits, so she could purchase fabric and start a 31-year business in a new building they built in De Soto. Ruth and Russ moved to the Adel-De Soto area in 1967. In 2011, they moved to a new home just west of Evans Park in Adel.
Ruth is survived by her husband; daughters Kathleen Anna and Christine Joan; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and siblings. She was preceded in death by children Carol Jean and Harold Dean.

Susan Diane Belgarde

Susan Diane Belgarde, of Adel, died July 1, 2022. Suzy was born on Jan. 27, 1945, in Deep River. She attended Adel High School. During her time at school, she was voted homecoming queen before graduating in 1963. Suzy worked as a bookkeeper for Straight Engineering, Brenton Bank and Raccoon Valley State Bank over the years. Suzy was a caring person who treated every person she met with kindness. She enjoyed playing all types of card games, watching sports of any kind, and spending time with animals, especially cats. She is survived by her sister, Pat Gilliland, and her husband, Ron; daughter, Kiff Belgarde and her husband, Kirk Brown; granddaughters, Sara Brown, Jessie Orf and her husband, James; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Doris Keller; sister, Judy Doty; brother, Scott Keller; and Kiff’s father, Gene Belgarde.
Suzy will be laid to rest at a private family service on Monday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life lunch at 11:30 a.m. open to all friends and family at the First Christian Church at 218 N. Ninth St. in Adel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Christopher Sinn

Christopher Sinn, 60, died July 2, 2022. He was born to Dean and Betty (Wallace) Sinn in Des Moines. He graduated from high school from Van Meter in 1980 and received a bachelor’s degree from William Penn in 2003. He served in the Navy for several years, retiring in 2004. He dedicated his career to John Deere and retired after 20 years in 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Kathy; his children, Lindsey (Nick) Fitch, Crystel (Matt) Corbin, Noelle Sinn and Holly (Jake) Sinn; Kathy’s children, Tommy, Candi and Chrystal Belz and Janine (Nate) Sego; parents; mother-in-law; two sisters; and 14 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his nephew and father-in-law.
A service was held on Thursday, July 7 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, 735 S. 14th St., Adel. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to go toward college savings for all his grandchildren.

Mavis ‘Carlene’ Alfred

Mavis “Carlene” Alfred, 84, died June 24, 2022, while residing with her daughter. She was born in Oklahoma City and spent most of her childhood in Grayville, Illinois, before moving to West Virginia where she eventually met her late husband, DeWayne Alfred. She was dedicated to her career as a skilled service assistant for the State of West Virginia.
Carlene is survived by her children, Michael McKibben, Vincent McKibben, Renee McKibben and stepson William “Bud” Boggess; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by several siblings and her husband.
A private celebration of life will be held on her next birthday: Nov. 5, 2022. Carlene was a longstanding charity donor to both Disabled Veterans and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Tari Brelsford

Tari Brelsford, 63, died June 30, 2022, at home in Waukee. She was born in Denver, Colorado. Anyone who knew Tari knew about her love for animals, especially cats. Additionally, Tari enjoyed knitting, various television programs, and reuniting with her Waukee Class of 1976.
In keeping with her wishes, Tari will be cremated and laid to rest next to her parents, Robert and Glennice, at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes. Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with final arrangements.

Mary Ann Lemar

Mary Ann (Pierce) LeMar, 83, died July 1, 2022, at Independence Village in Waukee. Mary Ann grew up in Russell and graduated with honors from Russell High School. She worked in various office administrative positions in Chariton and Des Moines. She retired in 2003 after a 20-year career as the office manager with the Iowa Motor Truck Association. Mary Ann married the love of her life, Guy “Gus” C. LeMar. They were blessed with a son, Tracy Scott LeMar.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, son, and brother, Roger Pierce. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Deb LeMar; grandsons, Alex and Jake LeMar; her sister-in-law, Judy Pierce, her brother Steve (Becky) Pierce, two nieces and two nephews.

Stephen Edward Loy

Stephen Edward Loy, 74, died June 28, 2022. After graduating from Valley Falls High School in Kansas in 1966, Steve received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University. He married Marilyn Vogelsberg in 1970.
Steve was a life-long cattleman/cowboy. For the last 35 years of his working career, he was employed at Greig & Co in Estherville. One of his many joys was playing sports and coaching basketball.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Hefty, and nephew, Jeff Loy. He is survived by his wife; children Shawna (Tom) Dumbaugh, Riann (Ben) Hansen and Shane (Nicole) Loy; and eight grandchildren.
A celebration of life reception will be from 5-7 p.m., with a time of sharing at 6 p.m., on Friday, July 29 at Memorial Services of Iowa, 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd., Ankeny. Eleanor Thompson Schumacher

Eleanor Thompson Schumacher, 95, died June 27, 2022. She was born in Casey. After graduating from Casey High School, she trained as a registered nurse at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Eleanor married Peter Schumacher in 1949. After residing in Des Moines and Chicago, they moved to LeMars, where she was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Linger Longer Ladies Club, and worked at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center.
After moving to Des Moines in the early 1980s, she worked as a nurse at Broadlawns Hospital, the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, and Crossroads Park Elementary School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines and served many years with the funeral lunch ladies group. She was a 6.5-year resident of Walnut Ridge Senior Living.
Survivors include her children, Mary Alice Schumacher (Ron Ostrow) and James Schumacher; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter-in-law, Somwang; two sisters and two nieces.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

William David Stuart

William David “Bill” Stuart, 62, of West Des Moines died June 24, 2022, in his home. Bill was born in Centerville to Harold David Stuart and Emily (Read) Stuart. He graduated from Centerville High School in 1979 and then headed to Des Moines to study IT, accounting and management at American Institute of Business and Simpson College where he received his bachelor’s degree. He worked for 34 years at West Bank and Fiserv in IT operations until he retired in 2016.
Bill was an active 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and current treasurer of the Capital Lodge #110 AF & AM. He had served as Worshipful Master and on the cemetery board of directors. He was also a long-time member and active attendee and volunteer of Lutheran Church of Hope.
Bill is survived by his aunt, Orvella Wright, and numerous cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents. A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 8 at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Cherie Coletta (Galvin) James

Cherie Coletta (Galvin) James, 87, died July 3, 2022. She was born in Murray. She graduated from Murray High School in 1953 and began work with Clarke County Welfare Department. She married her sweetheart, Bill, in 1956. She worked at the State House, Belmond Community Schools and Cedar Falls Schools, retiring in 1993. She was active in the PEO organization for more than 50 years and was active in church. Bill and Cherie moved to West Des Moines in the fall of 2021 to be closer to their daughter and family. She is survived by her husband; children Matthew Dean (Robert Estes) and Lisa Ann Guerra; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katherine Guerra, and son-in-law Dr. Manuel Guerra. In lieu of flowers, donations to Taylor House are preferred.

Matthew Robert Reid

Matthew Robert Reid, 40, of West Des Moines, took his own life on June 12, 2022. Matthew was born in Waterville, Maine. He graduated from Walnut Creek Campus of DMACC in 2000. He accepted a position at Windsor Windows of West Des Moines after high school and worked there until 2016, when he was accepted into a pre-apprenticeship as a union sheet metal worker for the Sheet Metal Workers Local 45 at Waldinger Corporation in West Des Moines. He received his journeyman’s license in 2021 and worked there until his death.
Matt is survived by his mother, Carolyn Thompson (Zach); sister Kelly Reid (Brad); children Kayla Reid, Madelyn Reid and Edward Ruiz; partner Belen Ruiz Sandoval; nephew, niece, aunt, uncle and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Edward Reid, and uncle William C. Reid. Private interment will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Jerry Lee Holub

Jerry Lee Holub of West Des Moines died June 30, 2022, after a brief illness. He was born in 1945 in Des Moines. He was a graduate of Wentworth Military Academy in Missouri, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and salesman of men’s clothing. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Borghi. He is survived by his daughter, Christina (Michael) Brady, and two grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive — date to be determined.

Susan Rae Gaard

Susan Gaard, 74, died June 21, 2022. The last five years of her life included more travel than she had ever done including a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. She spent more than 30 years as a school librarian at Adel High School.

Luz Esther Erikson

Luz Esther Erikson, 23, of Polk City, died by suicide on June 20, 2022. Luz was born in Colombia. She graduated from North Polk High School and was currently working with preschool kids at the Tender Years Daycare & Learning Center in Polk City. Luz was very passionate about human rights and had a strong feeling toward social work and helping others. Even in her death, she will help those who are suffering find peace and comfort.

Harriet June Hawbaker

Harriet June Hawbaker, 86, died June 23, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born in rural Earlham and graduated from Waukee High School in 1953. She was married to John “Bud” Irvin, and they had four children. They later divorced. In 1991, she married Stephen Hawbaker and gained two additional sons.
Harriet worked in the clerical department for various insurance companies, Grimes Sweetcorn Factory and Greyhound Bus Lines until she retired in 1992. Following retirement, she began home child care. She was a member of Waukee United Methodist Church.
Harriet is survived by her husband, Stephen; children, Steven (Vicki) Irvin, Mark (Cindy) Irvin, Kevin (Dawn) Irvin, Tina Irvin (Bruce Flesher) and Keith Hawbaker; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three sisters and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her son Jeff and three brothers-in-law.

Craig Ridout

Craig Ridout, 59, of Waukee, died June 24, 2022. Craig was born to Raymond and Linda (Cresap) Ridout in Greenfield. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1981. Over the course of his life, he worked in sales for Swisher International.
Craig is survived by his mother; siblings Kevin (Betty) Ridout and Kris (Kevin) Nielsen; step-mother, Betty Ridout; step-brother, Brandon Hubbs; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathryn Scott

Kathryn Scott of Waukee died June 18, 2022, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. She had been receiving cancer treatment since February 2021. Kathryn was born in 1959 in Oskaloosa. She graduated as valedictorian from Oskaloosa High School and William Penn College. She taught elementary band in Oskaloosa and Ankeny. She earned a degree as a computer programmer analyst and accepted a position with the former KVI in Des Moines and later at Wellmark. She was a gifted and accomplished clarinetist and played for the Des Moines Community Orchestra, Central Iowa Wind Ensemble and Arcadia Quintet. She is survived by her mother, Marilyn, and preceded in death by her father, Frank.

Norman Seib

Norman Seib, 78, of Waukee, died June 22, 2022, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Norman was proud of his Catholic faith and his military service in the Air Force. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Sharri (Jon) Moreland, Ann Koethe (Robert Wahlert) and Katie (Luke) Petersen; six grandchildren; and sisters Margaret and Jeanie. Brian Todd Chittenden

Brian Todd Chittenden, 48, died June 23, 2022, after a hard-fought battle with colon cancer. He was born to Bob and Sharon Chittenden in Des Moines and grew up in Mitchellville. He graduated from Southeast Polk High School, Iowa State University and later the Wisconsin School of Banking. He was the president and CEO of Legacy Bank, where he worked from a young age. Being an entrepreneur at heart, he dabbled in many other business ventures, including Cyclone Liquor/Cellar 626, Barnstormers, White Storm Media, Pathfinder Properties and Chittenden Family Wines.
Brian was a member of Lutheran Church of Hope, Glen Oaks, Harvester, Cyclone Gridiron and The Des Moines Embassy Club. He served on the Mercy Executive Board and was former president of the Altoona Chamber of Commerce. Brian had a passion for giving back and volunteered much of his time to help raise money for charities such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, House of Mercy, Richard Deming Cancer Center, and set up his own foundation, “Events for a Cause.”
He is survived by his wife, Monni; children, Cole, Macy and Liam; parents; sister Anne; and a host of extended family members and friends.

Mary Beth Kourey

Mary Beth Kourey, 86, died June 24, 2022, at Pine Acres in West Des Moines. She was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Mary Beth attended college at the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University, where she received her teaching degree. Mary Beth was particularly proud of her teaching career, having served at various grade levels. In total, Mary Beth helped educate young people for more than 50 years.
Mary Beth’s family include children Neal (Debbie) Thompson, Jeff (Tammy) Thompson, Patty (Dave) Lage and Sue Thompson of Urbandale; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Richard Thompson and Abe Kourey.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 27 at the Valley United Methodist Church in West Des Moines.

Alfred Mario Socarras

Alfred Mario Socarras, 66, of West Des Moines, died June 19, 2022, at home after a battle with leukemia. Alfred was born in Des Moines to Dr. Alfredo Socarras and Maria Sentmanat Socarras. He graduated from Valley High School in 1974, then Iowa State University in 1979 with a degree in economics. Alfred was an insurance underwriter for the majority of his life and was currently working at Nationwide Insurance. He attended the Lutheran Church of Missouri Synod church. Alfred married Rhonda Lee Bellon in 1981. They had four children.
Survivors include his wife; children Laura (Daniel) Olson, Daniel, Anne and Renee; three grandchildren; father; six siblings; mother-in-law; siblings-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Caroline Elizabeth Moore

Caroline Elizabeth Moore, 14, of West Des Moines, died June 20, 2022, at home. Carrie Beth was born at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She attended Jordan Creek Elementary and Stilwell Junior High. Carrie Beth was involved with choir, youth group at West Des Moines Christian Church, Circle of Friends at Jordan Creek Elementary, and loved visiting the zoo, going to Drake Women’s Basketball games, events at UNI and other Iowa sporting events.
Carrie Beth is mourned by her parents, Jan and Andy Moore; her brothers Wesley (Jennifer), Austin (Danya) and Travis; grandparents; aunt, uncle and cousin.
Funeral services were Sunday, June 26 at West Des Moines Christian Church. Memorials may be directed to the Blank Park Zoo, West Des Moines Christian Church, and IOWA Service Dogs.

Ronald Dale Scott

Ronald Dale Scott, 85, a long-time Des Moines broadcasting and advertising icon, died June 20, 2022. Ron was born in Cherokee, where he spent his younger years. He worked for WOI radio and television as an announcer and became an important part of WOI’s programing. He served as the long-time on-air host of “Seventeen” and, in 1958, was selected as one of several summer substitutes for Dick Clark on his nationally broadcasted “American Bandstand” on ABC. For several years, Ron also played the silent but very funny “Claude” on the popular WOI-TV Saturday night movie program “Grave’s End Manor.”
Following his time at WOI, Ron started his own one-man advertising agency in Des Moines. In the early 1970s, he merged his company to form Love Scott and Associates. For more than 30 years, Love Scott and Associates served more than 80 different clients in all kinds of commercial and non-profit enterprises in Des Moines, central Iowa and the Midwest.
Ron is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly, and their children, Kevin (Brenda) Johnson, Kim (Jeremy) Kroll, Kate (Thane) Peterson and Ron (Maura) Scott; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Dick and Roger.
A celebration of Ron’s life was held June 25 at West 48 Conference Center. Memorials in Ron’s memory may be directed to John Stoddard Cancer Center.

Christopher Leo Then

Christopher Leo Then, 55, died June 14, 2022, in a single moped accident. Chris was born in Dubuque to Leo and Mary Kay (McCullough) Then. Chris graduated from Western Dubuque High School in 1984. He played football at Iowa Central Community College then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa. In 1994, he married Connie Rutledge.
Chris was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife; mother; siblings Cathy Then, Craig (Lisa) Then and Carrie (Joe) Simon; father-in-law; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Epworth on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 4 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at Local’s in Epworth from 5-7 p.m.

Dr. Thomas A. Brown

Dr. Thomas A. Brown, 79, died June 23, 2022, in West Des Moines. Tom was born in Iowa Falls. He graduated from North High School and Iowa State University. He continued his education at the University of Iowa Medical School, specializing in ophthalmology. He owned his own practice for many years in Des Moines. He married Marcia Hudson Brown and had three children. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his children, Eric Brown, Mark Brown and Kimberly Na; brother, Dr. Robert Brown; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and brothers Don and Dave.

John Gregory Fox

John Gregory Fox, 67, died June 17, 2022. Greg was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. He graduated from Urbandale High School then attended Iowa State University. He owned and operated Iowa Window and US Window for 40 years. Greg was a member of the Perry Skydivers Club, the Des Moines Golf and Country Club, and was a certified SCUBA diver.
He is greatly missed by his wife of 33 years, Amy; children Michelle, John and Nicholas; brother, Earl (Stephanie) Fox; mother-in-law, Charlotte Laird; and a host of other family members and friends. Greg was preceded in death by his parents.

Rebecca Sue Jackovich

Rebecca Sue Jackovich, 72, died June 19, 2022, at ProMedica Care Facility in West Des Moines. Becky was born in Boone and attended Des Moines Schools. She studied the Lay Ministry curriculum taught by Creighton University in Des Moines. She served as a deacon and elder in her church. While living in Altoona, she noticed a lack of resources for food insecure families and, in 1995, opened the Matthew 25 Ministries Food Pantry. This one-room pantry has grown in the past 27 years to become Caring Hands Food Pantry, now including the Clothes Hanger and a thrift store.
Becky is survived by her sister Lyn (Steve) Elsberry, aunt Eileen Jackovich and many cousins and friends.
