Christopher Leo Then

Christopher Leo Then, 55, died June 14, 2022, in a single moped accident. Chris was born in Dubuque to Leo and Mary Kay (McCullough) Then. Chris graduated from Western Dubuque High School in 1984. He played football at Iowa Central Community College then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa. In 1994, he married Connie Rutledge.
Chris was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife; mother; siblings Cathy Then, Craig (Lisa) Then and Carrie (Joe) Simon; father-in-law; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Epworth on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 4 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at Local’s in Epworth from 5-7 p.m.

Dr. Thomas A. Brown

Dr. Thomas A. Brown, 79, died June 23, 2022, in West Des Moines. Tom was born in Iowa Falls. He graduated from North High School and Iowa State University. He continued his education at the University of Iowa Medical School, specializing in ophthalmology. He owned his own practice for many years in Des Moines. He married Marcia Hudson Brown and had three children. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his children, Eric Brown, Mark Brown and Kimberly Na; brother, Dr. Robert Brown; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and brothers Don and Dave.

John Gregory Fox

John Gregory Fox, 67, died June 17, 2022. Greg was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. He graduated from Urbandale High School then attended Iowa State University. He owned and operated Iowa Window and US Window for 40 years. Greg was a member of the Perry Skydivers Club, the Des Moines Golf and Country Club, and was a certified SCUBA diver.
He is greatly missed by his wife of 33 years, Amy; children Michelle, John and Nicholas; brother, Earl (Stephanie) Fox; mother-in-law, Charlotte Laird; and a host of other family members and friends. Greg was preceded in death by his parents.

Rebecca Sue Jackovich

Rebecca Sue Jackovich, 72, died June 19, 2022, at ProMedica Care Facility in West Des Moines. Becky was born in Boone and attended Des Moines Schools. She studied the Lay Ministry curriculum taught by Creighton University in Des Moines. She served as a deacon and elder in her church. While living in Altoona, she noticed a lack of resources for food insecure families and, in 1995, opened the Matthew 25 Ministries Food Pantry. This one-room pantry has grown in the past 27 years to become Caring Hands Food Pantry, now including the Clothes Hanger and a thrift store.
Becky is survived by her sister Lyn (Steve) Elsberry, aunt Eileen Jackovich and many cousins and friends.

Kristen Ellwanger Kittrell

Kris Kittrell of Johnston died June 17, 2022, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines after a nine-year journey with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Sac City in 1946 and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1964. She enrolled at Centerville’s Community College. She moved to the Des Moines area to work for Look magazine then accepted an administrative position at the CPA firm Kiesling Associates. Kris married John in 1974; they lived in Urbandale, then Johnston. Kris retired from Kiesling in 2000 and began a part-time career at Creekside Quilting store in Clive for another 10 years. Kris made many life-long friends wherever she went. She belonged to quilt groups, running groups, a book club, and St Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
She is survived by husband, John; daughter, Kimberly (Scott) Stewart; three granddaughters; a brother and a sister; and many more relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Gail. Visitation was June 23 at Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines. Norma Jean Sutton

Norma Jean Sutton, 86, of Johnston, died June 17, 2022. Norma was born in Des Moines and graduated from Dexfield High School in 1953. She received a bachelor’s degree from Drake University in 1957 and completed her master’s degree in counseling from Drake University in 1986. She married Stephen Sutton in 1959, and they rooted themselves firmly in their Johnston home in 1968, where she lived the rest of her life.
Norma is survived by her husband; children David, Denice and Spencer (Andy); and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Daniel.
A visitation ceremony will be 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 4525 Beaver Ave., Des Moines. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, also at New Hope.

Richard ‘Dick’ Sepanic

Richard “Dick” Sepanic died June 20, 2022. He grew up in New Jersey. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1961, serving four years as an aircraft mechanic and using that experience to establish a career in motor control system sales. He married Cynthia Hernych in 1967 and raised four children.
He is preceded in death by brother Ronald. He is survived by his wife of 55 years; children Jason (Kathleen) Sepanic, John (Abbie) Sepanic, Matthew (Gina) Sepanic and Meredith Sepanic-Hall; nine grandchildren; brother, John (Joyce) Sepanic and their three children.
A funeral mass was held Monday, June 27 at St. Pius X Church, followed by interment at McDivitt Grove Cemetery. Donations be made in Richard’s memory to America’s Vet Dogs or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Thelma I. Worden

Thelma Inez (Livezey) Worden, 99, died June 13, 2022, at Independence Village in Waukee. Thelma was born in Grinnell. She graduated from Searsboro High School and earned a secretarial science degree from Drake University. She enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943 and was stationed in Miami, where she met her future husband, Robert Worden. Thelma received an honorable discharge in 1945. She and Bob were married that year.
Thelma and Bob lived in Marshalltown and relocated to Urbandale in 1963. Thelma volunteered many hours as a two-time president of PTA, Mercy Hospital Guild member, Cub Scout den mother, Census enumerator and office worker, Chairman of Election Polls for more than 20 years, secretary for the Blood Bank of Iowa and secretary for Schering Plough for 20 years. She was also active in the St. Pius X parish in Urbandale.
Thelma is survived by her children, John (Beverly) Worden, Mary Beth (Tom) Horton and Martha (Clair) Sumner; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Walter (Pat) Livezey; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband and five siblings. Services were June 22 at Iles Westover Chapel. A military committal service was held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Donna Jean Johnson

Donna Jean (Chaplin) Johnson, 82, of Waukee and formerly of Spencer, died June 13, 2022. She was born in Oelwein to August and Elsie (Faist) Chaplin. She attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She married Larry Johnson in 1962. They lived in Spencer for 48 years before moving to West Des Moines in 2011. Donna was a faithful member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church.
Donna is survived by her husband; children Tracy Jensen, Stephanie Wanned and Kevin (Tara) Johnson; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Jim (Mary). She was preceded in death by two brothers and son-in-law. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, with family greeting friends starting 10 a.m.

Peter Matthew Glinieckie

Peter Matthew Glinieckie was born in Stillwater, Minnesota. Peter was an avid photographer, videographer, and best friend. He was active in the music, car, gaming and outdoors communities where he shared many good times with his family and friends. Immediate family survivors include his parents: Matt Gliniecki and Patti Velman; brother, John Gliniecki, and grandfather, Theodore Velman. Peter will be missed by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends, and his two four-legged best friends, Hoss and Otis.

Finnegan Reid Bunnell

Finnegan Reid Bunnell was born sleeping on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at 11:32 p.m. He weighed 3 pounds and 15.8 ounces and was 16.5 inches long.
He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by his parents, Dakota Bunnell and Kara Egan; grandparents, David and Tasha Egan, and Gary and Ellen Bunnell; his two fur siblings at home, Chip and Bella; along with his Auntie Emma, great-grandparents, many cousins, and other aunts and uncles.

Marti Jo Breit

Marti Jo Breit, 59, died June 11, 2022. Marti was born in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, to Marianne (Martin) and Wesley Shubert. The family moved to Iowa when Marti was 5 years old. She graduated from Ames High School and then attended Iowa State University. Marti worked for Josten’s Jewelry in sales and jewelry design and was instrumental in creating one of the Seminole College championship rings. She retired in 2012, but her creativity continued.
Marti will be missed by her husband of 22 years, Jeff Breit; her mother; two sisters; many nieces and nephews and their families; and other family and friends. Marti was preceded in death by her father.

Sylvia Muenzenberger

Sylvia Muenzenberger, 91, died June 4, 2022, at Edgewater Retirement Community. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She married Robert Muenzenberger in 1952 and had two sons.
Sylvia is survived by her sons, John (Elizabeth) and James (Lisa); three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A private service will be held later this summer. Carol Ann Fraizer

Carol Ann Fraizer, 72, died June 17, 2022. Carol was born in Des Moines and attended Christ the King grade school and Saint Joseph Academy, graduating in 1968. Carol married Michael G. Fraizer in 1969.
Carol is survived by her children, Michael (Lisa) Fraizer and Michelle (Bill) Reagan; six grandchildren; and two siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband and sister, Mary. Frederick John Larrison

Frederick John Larrison, 86, died June 17, 2022 in Des Moines. Fred was born to Genevie (Varner) and Charles Larrison in Newton. He attended Newton schools and graduated in 1953. Fred served in the National Guard for 12 years and was on active duty for two of those years. In 1966, he founded Iowa Soft Water, Inc. and owned the company for approximately 40 years.
He married Carol Felton in 1958, and they had three children. Fred then married Cordelia Conley and then Catherine (Kay) Smith in 1993. He and Kay resided in West Des Moines and spent 28 wonderful years together. Fred is survived by his wife, Kay; children, Dr. Tracey Larrison, Darwin (Kris) Larrison and Amy (John) Miles; step-daughter, Shannon (Kevin) Gaydos; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, David Larrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Moore; and brother, Terry Larrison.

Jay Norbert McCauley

Jay Norbert McCauley died June 16, 2022. He was born in 1959 in Des Moines to Norbert and Helen (Packard) McCauley. In 1982, he took a job at Creighton University where he met Kirsten Schmidt. They married in 1987.
He is survived by his wife; daughters Elizabeth “Ella” and ErinMarie; five siblings; several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce and nephew Thomas.

William ‘Bill’ Henry Riess, Jr.

William “Bill” Henry Riess, Jr., 79, died Friday, June 10, 2022. Bill was born in North English and attended the State College of Iowa (UNI) and continued his education at Iowa State University where he earned his PhD in education. Bill was first a teacher, then a principal, and rounded out his career in educational sales. He married Beverly Wynn in 1978.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Tim) Lundberg; two grandchildren; two sisters and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife; three siblings-in-law; and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, June 27 in the chapel at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, with a luncheon following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation or to Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines.

Gail Marie Van Wyk

Gail Marie (Gorham) Van Wyk, 69, died June 11, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines due to complications following the removal of a pancreatic cancer tumor. Gail was born in Omaha. The family moved to Ohio when she was 4 and then to New Jersey when she began ninth grade. Gail graduated from Governor Livingston Regional High School in 1970, then Iowa State University in 1974, with a bachelor of science degree in food and nutrition with a major in dietetics.
Gail met Harlan Van Wyk in college and married him in 1973. They settled in Runnells with their children. Following their divorce, Gail raised her kids in Pleasant Hill and later in life enjoyed living in Johnston. Gail worked at Broadlawns Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospitals in both Knoxville and Des Moines, achieving 30 years of service with the VA in 2022.
Gail is survived by her children, Michelle (Greg) Thompson, Sarah (Phet) Quang and Daniel (Lindsey) Van Wyk; six grandchildren; sister and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held Friday, June 17 at Iles Dunn’s Funeral Home, Des Moines.

Donna Kay Reed

Donna Kay Reed, 67, died June 5, 2022, at home in Adel. She was born in Des Moines and graduated in 1973 from Waukee High School. Donna is survived by her husband, Daniel Reed; children Nick Nizzi, Tracy Riley and Sarah Nizzi; step-daughter, Miranda Reed; a grandson; two sisters; a nephew and two nieces. Gregory Lee Mowrey

Gregory Lee Mowrey, 63, died June 11, 2022, after a four-year battle with cancer. Greg was born in Des Moines to Marvin and Ruth Mowrey. He graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in sociology and economics. Greg used those skills in his career as an account manager for industrial manufacturing and factory automation companies.
Greg is survived by his parents, children Jenna (Kyle) Blair and Scott (Alexis) Mowrey, four grandchildren, and two brothers.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, with a memorial service at 2 p.m.

Rebecca Whiteley

Rebecca Whiteley, 69, died June 4, 2022. She was born in Guthrie Center and graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1971. She received her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in 1975. Following graduation, she performed with her bandmates at Eddie Webster’s in West Des Moines. Becca worked in advertising specialties for the Bob Allen Company in Des Moines and then did graphic design work with her husband in the sporting goods industry. Becca and Bill were married in 1980.
Becca is survived by her husband; children Meggen and Devin (Sarah); two grandchildren; two siblings; and many nieces, nephews and other family members. She was preceded in death by her son, Lucas, and sisters Linda Shipman and Marjorie Horn. Funeral services were held Monday, June 13 at Hamilton’s, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Andre Scott Outlaw

Andre Scott Outlaw died May 28, 2022, after a renal cancer diagnosis. Andre was born in 1968 and raised in Chicago by his aunt and uncle until the age of 10. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Chicago and worked numerous jobs to put himself through college to obtain two associate’s degrees. He started his career at Protiva Computer (later EDS), which brought him to Des Moines.
In 2006, Andre met his future wife when he went to fix her computer and fell in love with her at first sight. Andre and Rhonda were married in Winterset in 2011. They moved their family to West Des Moines in 2016.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Halle; stepdaughter, Juliana Bempah; mother, Dorothy Outlaw; sister; five siblings-in-law; and 17 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters-in-law Romana and Rebecca Haworth.
A celebration of life will be 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on June 18 at Valley Junction Activity Center, 217 Fifth St., West Des Moines. Contributions are suggested to Halle’s college fund, medical bills, or living expenses through an account that has been set up in Andre and Rhonda’s names. Marleen Ann Dixon

Marleen Ann Dixon died June 1, 2022. She was born in 1950 in Carroll. She graduated from Ar-We-Va High School in 1968, then from Northwest Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1972. Marleen was a buyer for Younkers for nearly 25 years and was also employed at the Briggs Corporation and UnityPoint.
She is survived by her sisters: Janis, Vicki and Terri; four nephews; eight great-nieces and nephews; a great-great-nephew; and other relatives and friends. Marilyn Janet Hill

Marilyn Janet Hill died June 9, 2022. She was born in 1933 in Des Moines, with her twin sister, Marjorie Jane Hill. Marilyn grew up on a farm near Minburn. She attended all grades and graduated from Washington Township Consolidated School in 1951. Marilyn graduated from Iowa State University in child development in 1955. Later she was a graduate student at Drake University.
She married Marvin Hagedorn in 1954. Marilyn was with her husband when he was a Lieutenant in the Army for two years in various parts of the country. After this time, Marilyn was the Recreational Therapist director at Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines. She also taught kindergarten at Crocker School in Des Moines. They lived in Des Moines, and later Dallas Center and West Des Moines. She sang in various church choirs for forty-five years. The Dallas Center Presbyterian Church was one of Marilyn’s favorite church congregations. Marilyn taught kindergarten in Dallas Center-Grimes for 26 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers’ sorority, Des Moines Area Retired School Personnel Association, Jean Cardinell Chapter of the DAR, Retired Elementary Teachers’ group of Dallas Center-Grimes Schools, Des Moines Women’s Club, and the Washington Twp-Minburn School Restoration Association.
She is survived by children Mark (Teresa) Hagedorn and Mary Burns; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, parents and infant brother. Memorials may be made out to the family. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

Verna McManus

Verna McManus, 92, died June 8, 2022, at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines. She was born in Packwood. She retired from the College of Education at Drake University in 1984. Verna was a 50-plus year member of P.E.O. Chapter LS, in the first group of Hospice of Central Iowa volunteers in 1978, a longtime volunteer for Blank Hospital Guild, appointed to the first Iowa Foster Care Review Board by Iowa Gov. Bob Ray, and a member of West Des Moines Christian Church for many years.
She is survived by sons Mark (Pam) and Brent (Dian); four grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William (Bill), and sister Lois Marsh. Services were held on Tuesday, June 14 at McLaren’s Resthaven Funeral Chapel.

Edward ‘Ed’ Perry

Edward “Ed” Perry, 78, died June 1, 2022, at Every Step Kavanagh House. Ed was born in Shenandoah, where he attended grade school and high school. Ed graduated from Tarkio College and Dubuque Theological Seminary. Ed continued his education in the healthcare field. He worked for Broadlawns and Mercy hospitals.
Ed is preceded in death by his brother David Perry. Ed is survived by his wife, Christine “Chris” Perry; sister-in-law Michelle Stanley and husband Mike; brothers Bruce, William and Richard Perry; special friend, Patty Palmer; and many nieces and nephews.

John Joseph Brumer Jr.

John Joseph Brumer Jr., 79, died June 6, 2022. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Cecilia Mary (Brehmer) and John Joseph Brumer Sr. He was a graduate of Rufus King High School. John was president of Ankeny Little League from 1976-1978 and continued to be active as a coach and an umpire for many years later. He worked in sales for various companies across the U.S., with his final position with Qwest Communications in Des Moines.
John is preceded in death by his first wife, Paulette Brumer. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Brumer; children Pam (Dave) Sereg, Greg (Guadalupe) Brumer, Becky Thier, Tim (Trisha) Brumer, and Trina Brumer; step-children Erin (Tony) Smith and Tony Phillips; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven siblings and numerous nephews and nieces.
Services will be Thursday, June 23, at Hamilton’s, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Visitation is 1-2 p.m., then celebration of life service at 2 p.m followed by a luncheon. Gordon W. Halverson

Gordon W. Halverson died May 29, 2022. He was born in West Union and graduated from Central High School in Elkader in 1948. He joined the U.S. Navy a week later. While on active duty during the Korean War, he served with the Submarine Squadron Ten out of New London, Connecticut. Gordon graduated from the University of Iowa in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 1957, he married Mary Lou Spinner from Waukon. They moved to Denison where he began a career in the Savings & Loan industry and was affiliated with several civic and business organizations. He retired in 1985 and spent the last four years at Brio in Johnston.
Gordon is survived by his daughters, Carrie Clausen (Gerrad) and Heidi Patterson (Chris), and five grandchildren. He cherished his years of companionship with Patricia Johnson of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
A celebration of his life was held on Monday, June 6 at Brio. Memorials can be made to Shriners Children Hospital and WesleyLife Hospice.

JoAnn Mae Price

JoAnn Mae Price, 91, died June 2, 2022. She was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. JoAnn enjoyed being a housewife and a mother to four children. She is survived by her children, Rick (Sue) Price, Terri (Gary) Steinke, Wayne (Patty) Price and Gary (Doreen) Price; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. James F. Schaer

James F. Schaer, 83, died June 5, 2022. Jim was born in Elgin. After graduation from Valley High School, he attended Upper Iowa University, graduating with a major in business and a minor in botany. Jim attained his CPA in 1965. He was with Pollard, Schaer and Company, Equity Dynamics, and Investors Realty, Inc. Jim never retired. He spent the past 15 years managing his investment properties with his son Steve.
Jim married Martha Wagner in 1965. Jim was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for almost 60 years. He was on the American Baptist Region Board for several years. He served on the Board of Trustees of Upper Iowa University for 37 years. He was a member of his breakfast club for 35 years. Jim was proud of his family farm’s designation as an Iowa Century Farm.
Survivors include his wife; children, Mindy (Jim) Sawtelle, David (Vicki) Schaer and Steve Schaer; several grandchildren; four siblings-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings: John, Mary Ann and Martha; and grandson Tristan James Sawtelle.

Lora Newton

Lora Newton, 91, died June 1, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. Lora was born in Bussey and graduated from Bussey High School. She spent the majority of her career at Midwest Mutual Insurance Company as a supervisor. Lora was married to Loyd Dudgeon from 1949-59 and to Erbon Newton from 1961-92. She raised her family in New Virginia.
She is survived by her children, Linda Adams, Karen Dudgeon, Debra Newton Christensen and Donald Newton; and siblings, Letha Wales, Vergie Hodson, John Wales and Bob Wales. Lora was preceded in death by siblings, Leonard Wales, Ila Mae Wales, Kenneth Wales, Esther Kooymna and infant Willard Wales.
Visitation was Wednesday, June 8 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway. A graveside service was held Thursday, June 9 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or MercyOne Hospice in Johnston.

Linda Lou Hayne

Linda Lou Hayne, 73, of Waukee, died May 27, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Linda was born to Franklin Arledge and Betty Lucille (Foust) Highley in Iowa Falls. After living in Florida in 1973, she settled in the Minneapolis area in 1974. She worked as a bank teller in the area for many years. In 2005, she moved to Waukee to be closer to her parents and worked for Hy-Vee in their pharmacy from that time until her passing.
Linda is survived by her sons, Timothy (Julia) Smith, Jon (Miranda) Hayne, Christopher (Rebecca) Hayne and Mark (Erin) Hayne; eight grandchildren; two sisters; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Jeffery Eaton.

Veryl V. Olofson

Veryl V. Olofson, 95, died June 2, 2022, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. He grew up in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School. He joined the United States Army and honorably served his country during World War II. Veryl married Clarice Louise Coana and had three children. They raised their family in Boone where Veryl was a plumber for Holbrook Plumbing for a number of years.
In 1969, Veryl married his second wife, Twyla Keebaugh and added two daughters to his family. Veryl and Twyla lived in Des Moines, Norwalk and Texas. Veryl finished his career as a project engineer with the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames.
Veryl is survived by his long-time partner Deloris Wilson; children Linda Silver, Larry (Cheryl) Olofson, Patrick Olofson, Patricia Anders and Judy (Jim) Nordquist; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Bev Olofson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Twyla, three granddaughters, and brothers Leo Dean Olofson and Darrell Olofson.
In keeping with Veryl’s wishes, he has been cremated and a celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with his final arrangements.

James Richard Sammler

James Richard Sammler, 75, died May 31, 2022. Jim was a proud father, grandfather and Marine. He is survived by the love of his life, Pat; four children, Matt (Deena), Nate (Kim), Kirsten (Patrick) and Zack; 10 grandchildren and a brother.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with a time of sharing at 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 14 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines.

William C. Lawson

William C. “Bill” Lawson, Sr., 91, died June 5, 2022, at Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. Bill was born in Ackley. He attended North High School and graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1949. He married Janet Ann Baldridge in 1951. After Bill served in the U.S. Air Force, they moved to Urbandale in 1956.
Bill worked for Pittsburg Des Moines Steel Co. until 1973. He attended night school at Drake University, earning his associate degree in personnel management in 1963. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1973 to 1991. He served on the Urbandale Water Board and was co-founder of the Downtown Urbandale Neighbor Association (DUNA). He was honored in 1992 as Citizen of the Year and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, WDM Elks Club, American Legion and the V.F.W. There were two special projects that Bill created: the Veterans Plaza at the Charles Gabus Memorial Tree Park and the Lawson Trolley Park, which was named in his honor.
Bill is survived by his children, Julie Young and William “Bill” (Ann) Lawson Jr.; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; brother Robert; and son-in-law John Young.

Patrick ‘Rick’ Kerr

Patrick “Rick” Kerr, 75, died May 30, 2022 at Bickford Cottage in Urbandale. He was born in Knoxville. Rick worked at PDI as a truck driver for almost 30 years.
Rick is survived by his wife, Patt Kerr; children Kelle Capristo and Rick A. Kerr; granddaughter, Gia Capristo; other relatives and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his sister.

Marjorie Koester

Marjorie Koester, 93, died May 28, 2022. Marge spent most of her professional life in the Washington, D.C., area. She was a physical therapist and taught at several locations, including Northern Virginia Community College, where she started the Physical Therapy Assistant Program.
Marge is predeceased by sister Betty and brother-in-law Kit Kitzman. She is survived by siblings Richard (Didi) and Lois Kriebs; nine nieces and nephews; 17 grand-nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Kathy Ann (Lord) Coffin

Kathy Ann (Lord) Coffin died June 2, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. She was born in Des Moines and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy. She then went on to become a registered nurse through Mercy School of Nursing. Later, she obtained her bachelor of health arts degree from St. Francis College.
Kathy was an avid bicyclist and rode more than 20 RAGBRAIs. She was proud to be a nurse for more than 40 years with Mercy, where she worked in multiple disciplines from medical/surgical, skilled care to post-anesthesia recovery. After retiring, she volunteered with the Urbandale Food Bank and Connection Café.
Kathy is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Fred Coffin. She is survived by her mother; children Courtney Sharp, Chad Coffin (John Jordan) and Chris (Christie) Coffin; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four siblings; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
A memorial gathering was held on Wednesday, June 8 at the Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Donations can be made to the Urbandale Food Bank and Connection Café in her honor.

David Joe Thrane

David Joe Thrane, 84, died at Karen Acres Healthcare Center on May 28, 2022, following a years-long battle with dementia and arthritis. David was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His family moved to Garden Grove to farm full time. At age 17, David enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served three years in the Army, 82nd Airborne Division, spending an extensive amount of time stationed in Germany. He was discharged in 1958.
David’s career path led him to the construction field. Eventually, he landed a job with Robert E. McKee Construction and served as a construction superintendent until his retirement. He took pride in showing his kids and grandkids the projects he had helped build, which included the Dallas City Hall and the Texas Instruments plant.
David was married four times. He is survived by his six biological children, Sharon (Coleman) Farrar, David (Dawn) Thrane, Robert Ross, David (Colleen) Ross, Teressa (David) Edwards and Loretta (Joe) Wellendorf; five step-children, Jerry (Glinda) Welty, Lowanna (T.J.) Jackson, Larry Welty, Debbie Arntfield and Amber Buckner; 31 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Bonnie Wineinger, Gregg (Lisa) Thrane, Gary Thrane and Doug Thrane. David was preceded in death by three sisters, five brothers, two step-sons and one grandchild.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 4 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, Des Moines.

Na Tsang

Na Tsang died June 1, 2022. She was born on June 19, 1936. She is survived by her children, David, Angela, Eric, Nhina and Le; grandchildren, Madison, Kayla, Jacob, Elisa, Colin, Kolby, Konnor, Isaac, Sammy and Evan; and great-granddaughter Haydyn.

Ron Vernon

Ron Vernon, 74, died May 28, 2022. He was born in Jefferson and lived in Guthrie Center until he was 5, when his family moved to Des Moines. Ron attended North High School. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1970 and, the following year, married Judy Ann Jones.
Ron was employed at Bankers Life/Principal Financial Group for 41 years, retiring in 2011. Ron was active with the Premier Credit Union, serving in various capacities on their board for 43 years. Following retirement, he worked part-time as an usher for the Iowa Cubs.
Ron was involved in athletic organizations. He was a big supporter of the University of Iowa, including as football season ticket holder since 1979, and Iowa Wild hockey. He also took great pride in the numerous teams he coached over the years for his sons’ teams, including soccer at Northwest Soccer and baseball teams at Beaverdale Little League. He was also active with the DSM Hoover Booster Club. Ron ran AAU basketball tournaments for more than 20 years and served on the board of Iowa AAU. He worked in the press box for DSM Hoover football, was a Hoover basketball scorekeeper, and was at Drake University men’s and women’s basketball at the score table.
Ron is survived by his wife; sons Ryan and Randy (Courtney); four grandchildren; brother; two sisters-in-law; and other relatives and friends. Marcella Joyce Yochum

Marcella Joyce Yochum, 94, of Urbandale, died March 10, 2022. Marcella was born in Youngstown, Ohio. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1945. Marcella married John Yochum and moved to Newton in 1952. For 21 years, Marcella was the Welcome Wagon hostess in Newton. Then she was promoted to regional field manager for lowa and part of Illinois. In 1975 she was named the national field manager of the year. She retired after 41-plus years with Welcome Wagon. Upon retiring, Marcella moved to Urbandale, where she enjoyed playing bridge at the Bridge House, exercising with the Silver Sneakers, Red Hat Club, and being a greeter at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Marcella is survived by her children, Jolene (Harold Davis) and Scott (Debbie); three brothers; son-in-law; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. Preceding her in death were her sister Shirley Williams and daughter Jaci Gordon.

Timothy John Kalvig

Timothy John Kalvig, 60, died May 31, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Tim was born in Des Moines to Elmer and Iola (Berkeland) Kalvig. He graduated from East High School in 1980, attended DMACC and received his master’s degree from Phoenix University. Tim worked at Norwest Bank, Nationwide Insurance and, most recently, at Wells Fargo.
The Jaycee organizations changed Tim’s life. He was most proud of his positions as president of Des Moines Jaycees, JCI Iowa, and Iowa JCI Senate. He served as vice president of US JCI Senate of Region 6. Tim also served as Iowa Senate advisor and second advisor for Region 6 Senate.
Tim is survived by the love of his life, Teri Wilson; step-children, Carmon (Marcie) Wilson and Summer (Tony) Laurent; five step-grandchildren; three siblings; parents-in-law; two siblings-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry.

Jeffrey ‘Jorgy’ Todd Jorgensen

Jeffrey “Jorgy” Todd Jorgensen, 54, died unexpectedly from a heart attack May 29, 2022, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Jeff was born on May 31, 1967, to Karen M. Berndt-Jorgensen and Robin Jorgensen in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He graduated from Indianola High School then studied at Drake University. He worked for Principal Financial Group as a financial analyst.
Jeff had many hobbies, passions and skills. He enjoyed hot air ballooning and helped crew some hot air balloon events in Indianola. One of his greatest passions was music, starting from an early age when he played the bass in orchestra, to being a music DJ for special events.
He is survived by his sisters, Tracy (Mike) Golwitzer and Kelly Jorgensen; nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Dale John Gavin

Dale John Gavin, 89, died May 31, 2022, at the Des Moines VA hospice after suffering from complications of cancer. After high school, Dale joined the Army and served in the Korean War. In 1955, he married Patricia (Patty) Miller.
Dale worked for Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel for 10 years. One of his projects was the St. Louis Arch. He and Patty operated Gavin TV and Appliance for 57 years. He also owned and operated school buses for more than 40 years. He served as volunteer fire chief for 28 years. Dale and others were responsible for starting St. Mary’s Volunteer Fire Department in the 1970s. He was also awarded a medal on the 50th anniversary of the Korean War from the South Korean Government Ambassador in Des Moines and the Ambassador of Peace medal in a ceremony in South Korea. Dale was involved in his community including the American Legion and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In addition, he served as an emergency first responder and unofficial tornado chaser.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Pam Gavin, Cathy (Scott) Wiegert, Tim (Mary) Gavin, Beth (John) Manley and Alan (Emily) Gavin; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and seven brothers.

Norma Louise McKinney

Robert E. Hoskinson Jr.

Robert E. Hoskinson Jr., 76, died June 3, 2022, in Oskaloosa. Robert was born in Creston and graduated from Creston High School in 1964. He majored in English at Simpson College and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He received a master’s degree in 18th century British literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa. Robert married Marilyn Trotter in 1970. Throughout his life, he worked in many different roles, including assistant dean of students at Simpson College, resident advisor at Grinnell College, and a human service professional in multiple health settings and nursing homes throughout the state. Robert was an accomplished musician and poet. He was a member of various jazz trios and quartets.
Robert is survived by his wife; children, Tabitha (Barry) Blessing and Ben (Mindy) Hoskinson; sister; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother.

Ora Lorene ‘Tig’ Tigner
